Ten years ago, a selfish Russian superstar wanted more money from the Ottawa Senators. Alexei Yashin was traded out of town because his greed and personality did not fall in line with the values of our city.
What we wanted was a Canadian-born centre to take Yashin's place; a guy who could produce at the same level as the Russian star, without the high drama; a player who was committed to our community for the long-term.
We got him.
And now we're ready to run him out of town.

Wow. What an amazing quote.
Kudos, Mr. Mendes. Kudos.

Mendes is great
His columns are usually really, really good. Very fair and balanced, without the quick emotional responses of many reporters.

Man, killer article by Mendes.
I could not agree with him more.

when my buddies and i went to Buffalo for a game in January
We had him in stiches prior to the game, and continued to tey to make him laugh while interviewing Phillips during the pre-game skate.
Guy’s a class act and he’s absolutely, positively right about what this town is doing to Spezza. Ottawa fans are strong, yet vicious, and we tend to want change at any cost. It’s too bad, too, because most nhl’ers know that.

Preach brother!
I agree totally with Mendes on this one. Garrioch and the other troublemaking chucklehead reporters are the ones we should be running out of town.
Am i the only one?
To be very happy the senators got to the playoffs. I wanted them to make it before the season but i was expecting 7th or 8th position (and a lot of people were not expecting them to make it). To me, they performed above expectations. Kudos all around!
I expected them to make the playoffs
But was still happy they got in, and very impressed with the character they showed. If the team can improve their consistency next season (and avoid so many injuries), there’s no reason we shouldn’t see a longer playoff run, too.

I think we're all happy they made it
But pissed they didn’t advance. It sucks watching the team lose to the same team in the playoffs again, but hey, the Sens won two more games then they did last time.

Yeah, the way they went out in game 6 leaves an especially bad taste in my mouth
Still, there were positives. Regin blossoming, Leclaire playing like a true number one… I really felt that if Alfie, Kovalev, and Michalek were healthy, the team would have gone deep. Maybe all the way to the SCF if they really had to play Philadelphia and Montreal.
Of course, the cloud to that silver lining is that the team clearly does not have the offensive depth to overcome major injuries.

Did you know Spezza was a baby model?
Before being a year old, he won contest and was picked to be the poster boy for a Broadway musical. And at five, he was in a Minute Maid commercial.

He was probably only in TV until they heard him laugh.

I think I've seen the Minute Maid commercial
I could see why he’d be a child actor.

Did her turn over the glass of juice?
I kid, I kid, he obviously has a great public persona.

I just read the whole article
And it is perfect in every way. It just saddens me that it is a blog post on the Sportsnet website and not a column in a local paper.
Unfortunately more people will read Garrioch’s bullshit than this well reasoned, well written column.

Great post by Mendes!
He captured the situation well… I hope the fans see this and read it with an open mind!
Spezza is an essential part of the foundation of this current team. I have always supported him. As I mentioned in Peter’s post, it saddens me that the fans are causing him major discontent. He doesn’t deserve that.

I think there NTC kicked in 100 years ago
But San Jose might take them

After reading the first paragraph of that quote
I definitely thought it was going to be about Volchenkov.
Great piece by Mendes, and he is 100% correct. However, I still believe that the Sens will never win a Cup with Spezza as our #1 center.
Hahaha... Volchenkov isn't being greedy, and he fits in with the city
It’s different when you’re a UFA looking to maximize your earnings than when you’re on a contract, and you want to renegotiate it to maximize your earnings. Quite different.
