Silver Nuggets: Qualifying offers made to RFAs
A collection of Senators-related stories for your enjoyment:
- Qualifying offers have been extended to RFAs Peter Regin, Chris Campoli, Nick Foligno, and Jesse Winchester. (Sun)
- James Cybulski of TSN offers his take on the Jason Spezza situation in the eloquently titled "Be careful what you wish for, Spezza haters". (TSN)
- Our friend Jeremy Milks points out the interesting divide between the major sports media in Ottawa (who seem to be heavily promoting the idea of a Jason Spezza trade) and the blogging community (who tend to be a part of the "keep Spezza" camp). (Black Aces)
- The Senators realize it will be hard to move up in the draft without a second round pick, but may be interested in moving down in order to get an extra pick or two. (Sun)
- The official NHL schedule was released: home opener is October 8th against Buffalo, and Dany Heatley is in town December 2nd. (Citizen)
- There will be two official Ottawa Senators draft parties Friday night: one taking place at Bert's Bar in Scotiabank Place and one at the Boston Pizza location at 61 Boul. de la Gappe in Gatineau. (Senators)
- In case you missed it, the Bobby Ryan vs. Ryan Getzlaf sketch from the NHL Awards was pretty great. (NHL.com)

I ranted on the TSN website about Cybulski's article.
But they didn’t post my comment. Basically I just said the media was being irresponsible in speculating about the situation, and that 98% of fans wants Spezzer to stay.
What about this article?

Regin wants Vanek type money. Though he hasn’t had Vanek type production during his pre-RFA period. Vanek had an 84 point season before he was an RFA,
Gotta be a bargaining tactic
I can’t see anyone dropping that much on a player who hasn’t proven much outside of being a playoff performer.
Yeah, Regin can't get Vanek type money.
He’s not going to get a Vanek type offer sheet, nor a Vanek contract. Maybe in a few years, but he’s not THAT good at this time.

The idea that he could is laughable
He had a great second half of the season. Anyone who throws Vanek money at him for that will get what they deserve.
I think he’ll develop nicely, but he’s not worth that money right now. Not even close.

Everyone wants Vanek-type money
After one season in the NHL, though, Regin’s got a long way to go before he’ll get an offer sheet anywhere near that figure.
If that’s what he’s looking for, I imagine they’ll go to arbitration and come out with a figure similar to what I’d predicted earlier in the summer: $1-2.4M, depending on term.

Say in this magical fantasy Regin’s agent has concocted were to come true, what would Ottawa get if he were signed to an RFA offersheet?
I had to look this up
The compensation is based on cap hit, which is computed as an average over the length of the deal. The tiers look like this:
$994,433 or below – No Compensation
$994,434 – $1,506,717 – 2010 3rd round pick
$1506,718 – $3,013,433 – 2010 2nd round pick
$3,013,433 – $4,520,150 – 2010 1st round pick, 2010 3rd round pick
$4,520,151 – $6,026,867 – 2010 1st round pick, 2010 2nd round pick, 2010 3rd round pick
$6,026,868 – $7,533,584 – 2010 1st round pick, 2011 1st round pick, 2010 2nd round pick, 2010 3rd round pick
Over $7,533,584 – 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 1st round picks.

Vanek's cap hit is 7.1
So we’d be looking at Phil Kessel-like compensation. If a GM truly wanted Regin that badly, I would demand we build a time machine and fast forward to not matching the offer.

And if a team wanted to make that offer, they would need their own picks in hand
It’s like when Tampa wanted to make an offer for Meszaros, but didn’t have all of their own picks, so they swung a deal instead.

Campoli doesn't have arbitration rights, does he?
Quietly deletes post naming him team MVP
