UFA Hamhuis traded for Parent; what might we get for Volchenkov?
After the Philadelphia Flyers traded young defenceman Ryan Parent to the Nashville Predators in exchange for unsigned pending UFA Dan Hamhuis, I'm quite certain one thing popped into the minds of most Ottawa Senators fans: Does this set the asking price for any trade of Anton Volchenkov's free agent rights?
Certainly, most fans would prefer Volchenkov stay in a Senators uniform for next season (and the rest of his career), but an acceptance that his asking price is higher than the team will be able to commit has settled into most of the fanbase. Without getting too excited about his seemingly imminent exit, fans have also suggested trading away Volchenkov's rights to make sure we don't lose another star player for nothing. Initially, I was skeptical; Jay Bouwmeester got the Florida Panthers a conditional draft pick last season, sure, but Bouwmeester is a much different player than Volchenkov.
But with the Hamhuis/Parent swap (read more on From The Rink, On the Forecheck, and Broadstreet Hockey) this past weekend, that may have changed. Hamhuis is the same age as Volchenkov, with a similar skill set (slightly better offence, significantly lower defensive statistics), and he garnered a decent prospect for the Preds. What might Ottawa get for Volchenkov, a more sought-after asset who, according to Yahoo!, is the third-ranked UFA in this year's draft class?
Comparing Volchenkov to Bouwmeester would be folly--the two play a completely contrasting style, with the only real similarity being the position they're listed as on the roster. Comparing the former to Hamhuis, however, is a different story.
The two are virtually the same age, the same height, and a negligible difference in hitting proficiency. Hamhuis has slightly more offence to offer, while Volchenkov has significantly more shot-blocking. Hamhuis plays more ice time, but also takes more penalties. Volchenkov has a better shooting percentage (ha!).
Basing an assumption on the two notable UFA defenceman trades in recent history, Bouwmeester and Hamhuis, it's pretty tough to draw a conclusion. Bouwmeester brought Florida a third-round pick (Josh Birkholz) and the rights to Jordan Leopold, while Hamhuis' asking price was a decent defensive prospect. As is always the case, this will depend on how desperately a team wants Volchenkov, and how much competition they believe there will be for the free agent's services. Plenty of signs are pointing to a number of teams getting in on the bidding, which would only bring up Volchenkov's eventual salary; how much would it be worth for a possible suitor to try and avoid that bidding war--if anything?

I say if we are gonna trade Volchie....
…keep him out of the East. Learn a lesson from the Chara fiasco, and don’t let this guy come back to haunt us. He’s been a Senator for as long as I can remember, and likely knows our style better than any defender in the league. I’m hearing teams like Washington, Pittsburgh and New York all want him. Any of those teams would be a nightmare.
More urgently….are we gonna keep Spezza? I originally thought the rumour had no clout, but I keep hearing these persistent rumours. Anyone else worried? Depends on the return?
It’s tough being a Sens fan I tell ya.
Gah... the Spezza debacle...
If we trade him, the return had better knock my socks off. We can’t keep watching star players walk away for less than their true value. It’s no wonder why we have struggled with true depth for several years now…
I hope he’s not traded. I see little reason to think he will be traded. But the rumours persist…

Given how he finished the year, it's hard to believe Murray or Clouston would want to move him
I would hate to see him traded, and I’d have to believe that if it happens, it’s at his request and not the team’s decision.

I want to believe we can get something for him
But I find it hard to believe the market for him is so active that teams are worried they won’t get a shot at signing him. He can’t be THAT coveted, can he?

I see him being a good fit in Colorado.
Too bad they don’t have anything to trade. Half their call-up guys are UFAs.

LA might work
LA has cap space and might be willing to part with a prospect to take the next step. Based on what they did this year they are not far away and a guy like Volchie could really help steady their youngsters.
I think the market for Volchenkov also partly depends on his attitude about free agency. Does he want to play the market or does he just have a minimum number(say $5M) in mind. If it’s the second case, then their should be little risk for the receiving team as long as they don’t mind paying that amount. If it is the former then I think Volchenkov has zero trade value.
They have that already.
His name is Rob Scuderi. He’s done a pretty good job settling the youngsters.

Could someone please kill Bryan Murray so his big, fat mouth can stay shut? What does he think constantly talking about Spezza is achieving? Just another example of how terribly he’s handling this. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=325301
Nevermind
This is just poor reporting by TSN. Actually listened to the press conference, and Murray barely spoke of Spezza. Stupid TSN.
Sensationalism will always be the best way to sell newspapers
The Internet isn’t immune because it’s revenue-based, too.

Saw the clip on SportsCenter, they wern't misleading or sensationalizing anything
They didn’t have to, Murray said it all. He’s still talking way too much; I have no idea where his head’s at right now and it’s kinda distressing. I know he has to say something to the media but he just goes on and on and on…
Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.
Prepare for a long summer of Spezza rumours
We are going to be hearing this baloney all summer. There is no hockey to talk about so the media always spends the summer stirring up baseless rumours. Ideally, Murray would either provide them with some harmless stories that they could run with. Second best would be for him to phone Spezza and say something like, “listen Jason, sorry about the rumours, but I have to give them something to gnaw on. Don’t take any of it seriously. Enjoy your summer and we’ll see you in September.”
Also, most of the time he's probably just answering other people's questions. It's not like he stands up there and goes "so, let's talk about Giggles."

He doesn't need to answer questions
While I agree with you that he definately is getting asked questions about Spezza, he donesn’t have to answer them in an intimate manner. In fact, he doesn’t have to answer them at all. It’s just infuriating, because he seems like the only GM in the league who just publically comes out and says controversial things about his team.

I do wish he would shut up more
Especially after Spezza said that what they discussed in the end of year meeting was between them.

Wait, we're covering former GMs, too?
I submit Brian Lawton.
