Silver Nuggets: Sens face Pens in first round

Here are your Senators-related headlines for today:

  • After last night's Devils win and Penguins loss, the Ottawa Senators will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third time in four years. (Citizen)
  • Milks looks at last night's Alfie celebration and the upcoming series against the Pens. (Black Aces)
  • Buffalo media with a nice piece on the Alfie-fest last night, including some comments from Patrick Lalime and Lindy Ruff. (Buffalo News)
  • Bobby Butler was named to the East First Team All-American, while Patrick Wiercioch was named to the West First Team All-American (FreeP)
  • Hockey's Future has a nice interview up with prospect Chris Wideman, where he raves about Senators Training Camp and the attention the team gives to prospects even when they're away at college. (Hockey's Future)
  • Prospect Robin Lehner is getting his feet wet in the AHL. He did poorly in his first game (letting in 5 goals on 27 shots), but great in his second (only a single goal on 32 shots). (Sharp)
  • For those unaware, all playoff spots are now locked up except for one spot in the East, which will go to the winner of the Rangers/Flyers game at 3:00pm EST. Should be a good battle.
  • Some unfortunate news from last night's game: Drew Stafford has a concussion after that crushing (but clean) hit from Andy Sutton. Hopefully Stafford has a quick recovery. (Sabres Edge)

I feel really bad for Lundqvist

He played really well all season, always gave the Rangers a chance to win and they always struggled to put up any goals for him.

by Rob.D on Apr 11, 2010 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The way the Rangers played in that overtime was sad.

They played for a shootout. It was barely dump and chase. I’m glad they lost. They thoroughly deserved to.

by Mike Hurley on Apr 11, 2010 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

They figured Lundqvist would win it for them in the shootout and that's what they were playing for

I thought he’d win it for them too. Glad he didn’t.

Pronger is already in playoff mode, with that elbow on Shelley.

by Mark Parisi on Apr 11, 2010 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t their best strategy. They were outplayed the whole game; it makes sense to try and tilt the ice by using their best player. But no team should advance to the playoffs because they have a goalie that stopped three shots. It proves nothing.

by Mark Parisi on Apr 11, 2010 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

The whole idea of using a shootout to decide something meaningful is just wrong.

Olympics, World Juniors, these games, it’s all just an unfortunate situation. I understand that it’s “exciting” but… Ugh. That ruined the game today.

by Mike Hurley on Apr 11, 2010 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally agree

The only way I think it’s remotely fair is if you let the entire team shoot. Then there’s at least some balance.

Jokinen’s a choke artist. I’d put in a rusty Gaborik before he.

Now we’re stuck with the Habs against the Juggernaut.

I’m still gonna cheer for the Sens.

like if they tied that game and it went to goal differential or whatever

by Buz Killington on Apr 11, 2010 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

They should make shootouts discretionary.

Say in certain situations like this, multiple OT’s are allowable

by Mike Hurley on Apr 11, 2010 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought that myself, but why punish the team who makes the playoffs?

So the #2 seed gets to play a Flyers team coming off a 3-OT game? How is that fair to either team?

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Apr 11, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not like the playoffs start tomorrow, though.

Plus, that would provide extra motivation. That way the Rags don’t roll over in OT like they did today

by Mike Hurley on Apr 11, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

i disagree

45 minute drive to scotiabank place
$50 tickets etc
half hour in the parking lot to get out
45 minutes home

i wanna see someone win a hockey game

by Buz Killington on Apr 12, 2010 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I completely agree man.

There is nothing wrong with a tie in the season. For playoffs continuous OT is fine.

It's disgraceful that game ended in a shootout

One more stain on the name of Bettman.

I don't see how it makes a difference. Whether it was that game or the first game of the season, the shoot out won it.

I personally like the shoot out, it is highly entertaining, especially live.

I am AWESOME! Are you?

by Manthong on Apr 11, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The shootout completely removes the team aspect of the game

For me, the team dynamic is the whole appeal. The shootout is just a skills competition. They might as well let sports writers vote on who they think would win; it would be equally as valid.

I understand the drawbacks, but for the regular season I have no problem.

I would have a fit if they tried to change it to a SO in the playoffs

I am AWESOME! Are you?

by Manthong on Apr 11, 2010 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

They're probably better for the regular season

It just disappointing to see such an important game come down to a skills competition. But if it was the first game of the season and not the last, no one would be saying anything. Gotta take the good with the bad.

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Apr 11, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Shootouts are useless.

It’s a shame when games of this significance goes to a shootout. And it all comes down to whoever has the best snipers? It totally detracts from the game (see Marks points) hence why it’s not in the playoffs. Its just bullshit to make the game “exciting” and appeal to bandwagon fans or people who aren’t even fans of the game at all. A shootout win/loss means nothing in my books.

by sens_24 on Apr 11, 2010 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

all arguments aside, in the long run the shootout/extra point does not do anything to the standings. I have been keeping spreadsheets looking at both extra/no extra point and the standings are almost bang-on. There has only been once since the lockout that a team would have made the playoffs with the old system over the new one. This year, even if they went the other way, the Flyers would still have been in on a technicality. Because of this, I enjoy watching the SO. Plus, it does cause the playoff races to last longer.

I am AWESOME! Are you?

by Manthong on Apr 12, 2010 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Does not do anything to the standings?

I just looked at the shootout wins and subtracted the points they got for a W, being a tie instead…….and Montreal or Boston misses out on the playoffs while NYR and Philly are safe. I only did this for the East out of curiosity as you stated it does not do anything but I beg to differ, unless I’m not doing it properly.

by sens_24 on Apr 12, 2010 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

you guys would rather have the game tie?

hey then we can get all the excitement of going to goal differential to determine who gets the playoff spot!! woooooooo

by Buz Killington on Apr 12, 2010 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I would rather have a tie

than see a team game be decided by individual effort. It does not reflect the game at all. Besides the OT would be more exciting without shootouts because teams won’t be playing for shootouts.

by sens_24 on Apr 12, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont think anybody will be picking the sens in this one

but nobody picked us to make the playoffs either, before the season started. we were supposed to either battle for 8th or to be an outright lottery team. were a better team than alot of people give credit for.

having kovy would really be a difference maker tho

by Buz Killington on Apr 11, 2010 6:02 PM EDT reply actions

It's hard to see us winning if Malkin plays

They’ve traditionally shut down Crosby. On the other hand, with Sutton and Volchenkov in the lineup now, it’s conceivable they could win the series.

His barely punished hit on Mitchell still has him colouring outside the lines.

I am so excited for playoffs

I think we have a good chance against the Pens. If our defencemen can shut down their 2-3 top guys, then they have very little left. They don`t have big grinders. What needs to happen is Carkner taking out Cooke near the beginning. Show them who`s boss. Not let a weasel like Cooke throw in some cheap shots. Once you shut down the big fee guys, our depth filled team can crash the net and put in a few goals.

Again, I am so excited for Sens playoff hockey. Been way too long.

P.S. In taking out, I don`t mean injure.

I mean a bit of a pummeling. Don`t let him try to push his weak ass around.

I am excited as well

I think we can beat anyone on the day. I just hope we play to our full potential. If we do this we’ll be hard to beat.

Well, we've got Phillips and Android on Crosby, they've done well with that historically

Sutton-Karlsson vs Fedotenko-Malkin-Talbot is the money matchup for this series.

We will need everyone to be firing on all cylinders...

why do I think the Ruutu-Kelly-Neil line are going to come up big…? I’m pumping up….

by sens_24 on Apr 11, 2010 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I will actually bet on that 2nd line being more like Tenks-Malkin-Ponikarovsky instead of with Talbot. After his off-season shoulder surgery he has been EXTREMELY slow in getting back into top form. He’s also had a couple of injuries after his return that haven’t helped any.

I really think the 3rd lines will determine the series. T. Kennedy-Staal-Cooke (if he is back from his KO by Wednesday…ouch) is usually our money maker. If what you predict actually happens (your first D shutting down our first line) then the series will ride on how well Staalsy and Co. perform. Don’t underestimate them, they can chew up a substantial amount of time in the offensive zone wearing out a top line.

Thanks for the scouting!

Definitely not underestimating the defending champs. I don’t know if our guys can shut down the whole first line , but they’ve traditionally handled Crosby well.

I think you’re dead on with the assessment that the third lines are what will determine this series. I remember guys like Malone and Sykora tearing us up two years ago, along with Malkin. Our line of Ruutu-Kelly-Neil is going to have a tall order in shutting down Staal and company. They’re a strong forechecking and puck possession line, so it’s going to be really fun to watch!

Lucky for you guys, Bugsy and Petr-gun aren’t on the team, so you don’t have them to worry about!

From the stats, you’re third line is nothing to sneeze at either. It definitely will be interesting to see the back and forth as we get deeper into the series. Maybe it simply will come down to Goaltending, and I don’t know if I like that prospect considering how inconsistent MAF has been.

MAF inconsistency has nothing on Ottawa’s inconsistency. Five game losing streak, eleven game winning streak, five game losing streak, six game winning streak… mostly due to goaltending ups and downs.
