Game 77: Ottawa Senators @ Washington Capitals

Ottawa Senators at Washington Capitals, Mar 30, 2010 7:00 PM EDT

The Ottawa Senators are in the midst of a 4 game winning streak, but defeating the league-leading Washington Capitals will be no easy feat. What makes it even more difficult than it normally would be is that Anton Volchenkov will be sitting out and unable to shut down Alexander Ovechkin.

Brian Elliott starts in net tonight, as you probably expected.

So, who will I be watching tonight?

  • Matt Cullen: Cullen's been one of the best players on the ice recently, yet his point totals as a Senator do not reflect that. Hopefully he can get his name on the score sheet a bit more frequently.
  • Brian Lee: Lee will be playing with Chris Phillips, which means he'll see his fair share of Alex Ovechkin. This has me extremely worried. If there was a game for Lee to show why he was picked 9th overall, this is that game.
  • Andy Sutton: with Volchenkov out, Sutton has to be shot blockin' for two!
  • Alexander Ovechkin: actually, I may not be watching him. I may be looking away nervously every time this guy touches the puck.

As always, join in on the fun in the comments before and after the puck drops!

I've got some along those lines in mind

What if Thornton were more clutch. That one’s not finalized at all.

My other one that I want to do is “What if Hull… knew the rules?”

Oh man, now I want to do a horrible taste one

“What if no touch icing was a rule?” following a clip of Kurtis Foster unbreaking his leg.

I had one for Hossa involving the stick to the face of Bryan Berard. But that’s just mean.

If I do it right I can

Alter some wording, swap the playoffs logo with an NHL or team logo. But yeah, I’m hoping to do something playoff-related. There goes my Hossa/Berard idea.

“What if Hossa had taken a wrist shot instead?”

What if Patrick Roy could hold onto the puck?

What if Patrick Roy didn’t try to impersonate the statue of liberty?

on another topic

letang getting $3.5M.
i guess we dont have to worry about karlsson for a couple years, but seems to set a dangerous precedent. letang seems like a natural comparable for contract purposes.

by Buz Killington on Mar 30, 2010 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

ya thats true

immediately when i heard it the implications for karlsson’s contract came to mind. i didnt really realize it wouldn’t be for two more years until i went to type it out.

its not as scary when you think that in two years that could be a good contract for karlsson. plus they’ll be a bunch of contracts signed by other young stud defencemen in the meantime that will change the marketplace. so not really a big deal.

by Buz Killington on Mar 30, 2010 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Karlsson's numbers could earn him more than that

He’s been putting up some sick numbers the last few games. It’s got a lot to do with momentum, and the opposition not knowing what to expect, but he’s so dynamic…

by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 30, 2010 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Kris Letang’s money on that contract shot up since he was pretty good last season in the Penguins’ Cup Run, because if they didn’t make it to the big show, he would be making less. Ray Shero’s a smart man.

I have Theodore in net in my fantasy pool. History has shown that the goalies I put in tend to get scored on a whole bunch and lose.

It was that way with Elliott – I probably ended the winning streak when I picked him up, and am entirely responsible for our crappy play those two weeks post olympics. I dropped him a week ago and now he is awesome again.

lets root for the devils piece from hockeybuzz.com

Why Sens Fans should Root For The Devils…

I am amazed, just amazed at how many people think that in my last blog I, myself, picked the Coyotes to win the Stanley Cup. My Matchup Winner was purely based on a completely “Objective” system, not a subjective one. (That means I got no say kids)

Again, how this system works is so very simple. You yourself can do it home!

I simply put the teams into their playoff matchups and play out the playoffs basing the results of each series on the results of this season’s regular season series when the same two teams faced off against one another. My theory being that historically certain teams have other team’s numbers, and we often see that carry into the playoffs. My thought process is, by doing this, you may have more fun watching the last few weeks of the season and pulling for favorable matchups.

One caveat… Any player who cares who he plays in any round of the playoffs is a player I would never let play for my team again. I am a firm believer in wanting to face and defeat the best.

However, we all know this just doesn’t always occur. Upsets happen. Teams get favorable matchups and the Cup is won as a result.

For those of you who wanted to see it played out based on the actual projected final standings instead of the current standings…well me too!

So I ran the numbers on the projected standings and team positioning happens to be EXACTLY as it currently sits.

Therefore as of this morning the matchups still favor a NJ Devils/Phoenix Coyotes Final. And since in their only game Phoenix defeated the Devils, the Coyotes are still the Cup Champion.

However, it’s important to note only one switch in positioning could result in a completely different outcome.

For Example…

Let’s say NJ, wins the Atlantic instead of Pittsburgh (which could easily still happen) , but all else stays the same..

1. Wash
2. NJ
3. Buf
4. Pitt
5. Ott
6. Phl
7. Mtl
8. Bos

Playoffs and results..(upsets in bold)

Wash beats Bos
NJ beats Mtl
Buff beats Phl
Ott beats Pitt
-————————-
Ott beats Wash
Buffalo beats NJ
-————————-
Ottawa beats Buffalo
-————————

See what I mean? It is amazing how much one position swap means.

Unfortunately for Sens Fans The Coyotes beat you 3-2 in OT.

So yes, conspiracy theorists…the Yotes still win the Cup (assuming nothing changes in the West and everyone who won in the regular season wins in the playoffs of course!)
