Trade deadline open thread
It's finally upon us: trade deadline day 2010. Use this thread to discuss all of the trades as they go down, but be sure to check our main page for analysis of Senators related trades shortly after they go down. To be entirely honest, the Andy Sutton deal from yesterday means that there's unlikely to be any movement today, but we'll keep you posted anyways.
As discussed yesterday, there are three places to follow what's going on:
- This website. As soon as any Senators-related deals go down, they'll be posted here, with analysis written as fast as we can. We'll also have this live thread going for comments all day long.
- Our Twitter feed. Twitter is one of the best sources on trade deadline day, and we'll be sure to keep our feed updated with the day's biggest events and speculation.
- The 6th Sens deadline day chat. Our friends at The 6th Sens are doing a big deadline day chat featuring a number of bloggers, including me. Ask questions, discuss trades, and join in on the fun.
Enjoy!

For a 4th rounder
Interesting move by the Bruins. A team in 8th trading away assets?

What did Phoenix get for him last year?

Wow, nice flip by the Leafs
What’s the return?
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 11:19 AM EST up reply actions
So they traded Ponikarovsky for a prospect and low pick?
I’m not sure that’s a nice flip… I figured they’d be able to get more.
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
Caputi is considered a pretty good prospect. Likely better than who the Leafs would draft
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Yeah, I've heard good things about him, but it seems to be a 20-goal guy should be worth more
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
No, not really
But nice to get something for Skoula, anyway. Better than just paying his salary and losing him at the end of the year.

Boston acquires Seidenberg and Bartowski from Fla for Craig Weller, Byron Bitz and a 2nd round pick.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Wow, that's expensive
Bitz seems like a good player—very Bostonian—and a second-rounder? Do we know anything about this Bartowski guy, other than he’s got the same last name as the lead from Chuck.

So... aren't the Bruins having trouble scoring?
Weren’t they in the running for Kovalchuk at one point? And now they’re aquiring D-men?

Ward to the Ducks for Justin Pogge and a 4th
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
So much for him coming to Ottawa, huh?
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
Yeah.
Weird that ducks didn’t grab him off waivers a few weeks back.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Yeah... I don't really follow the thinking there
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
How touted is Pogge these days?
Can’t be very high…
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 1:01 PM EST up reply actions
I don't even think he's their backup right now
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
No, he's still a prospect
But the Leafs had already retired his jersey number, I think.

Coyotes aquire Wolski for Mueller and Porter
I’m pretty upset about this, as you can imagine
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
Yeah
But who is the Senators’ Wolski that they could give up?
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Foligno?
I think Vermette would be closer, but Foligno might be the closest we’ve got.
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions
would rather keep foligno than take mueller.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Me too
Mueller’s a crapshoot. Sounds like he might be fading away.
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 1:10 PM EST up reply actions
Totally agree
I would give up Lee and a pick for Mueller, but not someone like Foligno
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
There was apparently a lot of interest in Mueller. Don’t think Sens had the pieces to make this deal.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
I don't either
But I haven’t made it a secret that I covet Mueller…. I think the Avs did well for themselves there, though I’m still blown away that they’d even move Wolski. I wonder how he’ll do in Tippet’s defensively focused system?
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
You know what? I bet it was Mathieu who was "dangled" yesterday
I doubt Volchenkov would draw what might be a blue-chip goaltending prospect, even from a team that’s set with Bobbi Lu
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 1:41 PM EST up reply actions
Can't be
Mathieu has no value anymore. Corey is still a risk — he hasn’t done extremely well in his NHL call-ups.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Coyotes are going all in
Hamilton is going to be thrilled with the team they get next year

Jeff Halpern traded from Tampa to LA Kings
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
cannot believe that Flames wanted him.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Fingers crossed he starts against the Sens when I'm there.
And surrenders two dozen goals. And tries to fight Elliot, and subsequently loses.
Understandable
but Mark Parisi would be thrilled if he was a Avs fan. PETER MUELLER!
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
If Peter Mueller does anything significant I'll never shut up about it
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
What about if he retires at the age of 24?
And then pursues a career in acting, and then retires from that to continue playing hockey in Switzerland?
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Then I'll argue that we should have tanked our season to get him
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
Good luck with Wolski. I like the guy a lot.
Mueller scares me.

Volchenkov's agent just tweeted that Android will not be moved
He also told me a month ago that Khabibulin would not retire. So, yeah.
SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!! - ryanclassic.net
I don't understand why you want Corvo
Your team already takes too many offensive risks that give way to defensive breakdowns. Why Corvo?
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Because he wants to have a tattoo competition with Green. Duh.

This makes me laugh, too
When will Preissing be dealt for Nycholat?
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 3:18 PM EST up reply actions
Nycholat was traded to Colorado last year already
Then Cheechoo drilled him from behind and he was out for the year. For reals.
SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!! - ryanclassic.net
So Colorado has both Preissing and Nycholat?
Wow. That’s awful. How are they winning games?
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 3:24 PM EST up reply actions
Nope. Vancouver has Nycholat now.
Nycholat in 2008-09:
Ottawa → Vancouver
Vancouver → Calgary (just before deadline, story written in local paper about how happy he was to be going to his favourite team as a kid)
Calgary → Colorado (two days later)
2009-10:
Colorado → Vancouver (UFA)
SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!! - ryanclassic.net
And I think Preissing's more or less a minor league salary leech right now
Colorado’s trade was really Smyth for Quincey. Quincey’s been great.

Pierre McGuire, "(Sutton) will put his stick right through your face." Nice. I guess.

It's funny how he's exaggerating, but insists "And I mean that. He will."
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
It's like saying "He is literally a killer. Literally."
Or “He literally blocks every shot you take. Literally.”

The Leafs are having a serious fire sale right now
Boils down to Colaiacovo for a 4th and 7th. Weak.

Wow. What an awesome sequence of trades.

How many picks do the Canes have now?
5 extra ones by my count
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
Great deadline for the Canes
Got a good amount for their free agents. If they can do a good job drafting, this deadline will really reap benefits in 4-5 years.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Not a great deadline for their fans, though
It sucks to know you don’t really have any chance for a year or two. But, they might pull a Colorado, so who knows?
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
On the bright side for Carolina
They now have plenty of cap room to sign a game breaker or two this offseason.
Kovalchuk?
@kausatoday – After the Joe Corvo deal, the Caps now look the No. 1 winner. But you will have to go to USAToday.com to see my final rankings.
Don’t understand how he thinks Caps are the winner.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Jurcina, Corvo, Belanger, and Walker, none of whom play goal
So their most pressing need remains.
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 3:30 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah I think the Caps were a tad overzealous at the deadline
They bring in a number of new faces and send out some depth despite leading the conference by a mile. Meanwhile, Ottawa doesn’t subtract, and merely bolsters the roster.
This is going to be a great home stretch, folks.
mostly with goalies, but this is a big move.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
They've had two Leafs 3rd-stringers and one backup in the last year.
Confusing. Jeez.

Wow, traded for Whitney
Has Whitney been a flop there?
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions
The more we see the players moved and the prices for them, the more I'm ok with the Sutton trade yesterday
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
I'm pretty happy with it
I think Murray’s top priority was not subtracting anything from the roster, and he succeeded in upgrading the team without doing that.
by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 3, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed. It was the market price, pretty much.

Stephane Yelle to Colorado
This is my favourite trade of the day.
SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!! - ryanclassic.net
Love Yelle.
This is the happiest I’ve been about a 4th-line player being acquired ever.
Yelle was on the two Cup teams Colorado had. He was part of the inaugural season in Denver when I became a fan of the team. I don’t expect him to be a huge impact player. I want him to teach Ryan O’Reilly how to be the player he can be. They’re very similar, though O’Reilly has more offensive potential.
He’s a fan favourite, a good person, and can do nothing but help. Ask any Avalanche fan. They’re PUMPED.
Not so much about Mueller.

Peter Mueller fan club
Population: Me, Peter Mueller
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
Outshot 14-2, outscored 1-0
Ducks goal by Jason Blake.
Avs shots by Peter Mueller (!) and Adam Foote (!!!)
Stephane Yelle is going to wear 18, the cursed number. Sigh.
At least Craig Anderson is good. Wish we had him.
