Dear Ottawa Senators (Senators 4, Stars 5)

It's a metaphor, ok?

Hi guys, it's Mark.  You may remember me from such thrilling adventures as being the only guy in Rochester, New York not to jump on the Tampa Bay Lightning bandwagon, turning Daigle into a productive player in NHL '96, and that loud jerk by the glass who won't shut up about Fisher.  I was there for the agony of 10 wins the first year.  I was there when Duschene bagged the playoffs for us.  I was there falling backwards with Tugnutt when Plante's shot trickled through him.  I was there when we took it to New Jersey before Jeff Friezen scored and ended it.  I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not some punk crybaby fan.  I've got street cred.

But listen, guys, we've got to talk.

Star-divide

See, it's all about expectations.  I'm not the one that set those expectations, you are.  You're the ones who went on an 11-game win streak.  You're the ones who smoked teams like Chicago.  Hell, you guys have gone to the playoffs pretty much every year of my adult life.  I believe in this team because you've given me a reason to believe.  I knew last year was a fluke and when my friend Ottawa Jen asked me if they were going to make the playoffs I told her, "Yeah, next year."  Here's next year and you're in contention for a playoff spot.  You're a playoff team because that's what the Ottawa Senators are: A playoff team.  That's the way it's always been, and that's the way it will always be.  This franchise was built from nothing to what it is today through hard work.  You've been through bumps big and small along the way, but you kept getting better.

You've had some bumps this year too, and we don't need to rehash them yet again -- we both know what they are, and I'm not here to attack you.  But as always, you battled through them.  Of course, that peaked before the Olympics when I saw you get better for having endured adversity early in the year.  And yet, here we are, having this talk:

New York RangersCarolina HurricanesToronto Maple LeafsCalgary FlamesVancouver Canucks.  Toronto Maple Leafs.  Atlanta Thrashers.  And now the Dallas (North) Stars

I really thought you had this one.  You started out great.  Dallas couldn't move the puck at all.  The puck was in their zone all the time.  Two power play goals.  And then you just stopped.  I don't understand it.  Yeah, you have a system, but so does the other team.  It would be easy if both sides weren't trying to win.  When they step up the intensity, you have to come back out even harder.  You guys keep clawing your way back into games only to collapse at the worst possible time.  It's time to end that.  It's time to step up.  If you can't match the intensity of the bottom-feeding teams, what do you think is going to happen in the playoffs?  Remember how shell-shocked Pittsburgh was in 2007 when you smeared them?  Guess what, the playoffs haven't gotten easier since you've been away. WAKE UP.  Wake up, because I know you can.

Daniel Alfredsson:  You're the best captain in the NHL, and there's no doubt about it.  Other teams can slap a C on their little golden boys because it sells jerseys while their veterans do the leading, but this is your team.  I know you have a Superman complex when things get tough but you can't do it all.  You couldn't when you were younger, and you can't now.  What we need from you is more like the game you played today.  Your leadership must come from being smart with the puck and not trying to put the team on your shoulders.  You can still play, but you have to play smart now.  Smart play and hard work are what will lead this team back to winning and everyone will follow your lead.

Jason Spezza: More of this, please.  You are the guy that has to put the team on your back now.  You can dominate the ice, but you have to do it every night.  That's the difference between a player and a star.  I know it takes a ton of effort to play the way you played today, but that's what it takes.  To reach that upper level, your mind, body, and soul must be one.  You've shown you can do it.  Now DO IT.

Peter Regin, Jesse Winchester:  I believe the children are the future.  You both played your roles to perfection today.  Keep it up.

Alex Kovalev: I'd like it if you cared when the playoffs hit, ok?

Erik Karlsson:  You played like a rookie today.  I'm willing to overlook this because you are a rookie.  There will be growing pains, and until you suck continuously I will continue to accept them.  But you sucked out there.  Stop sucking.  Sorry you're in a pressure-filled position already because your fellow defensemen don't have your skills, but if you suck, we lose.  So, stop.  I mean it.

Pascal Leclaire and Brian Elliott:  I'm done with you both.  Pascal, I have defended you all year, but no more.  Five goals on nineteen shots is a joke.  Goalies are supposed to be even-keeled, but the longer the game went on, the more you scrambled.  You've had your chances to be this team's goaltender, and you haven't taken advantage of any of them.  It's time to stop pretending you're a top goaltender.  You're not.  Top guys rise to the occasion and you've done nothing but let the team down.  Sorry they played badly in front of you early in the year -- so did your former team.  Suck it up.  I'm never going to believe you've truly turned the corner after today.  You could get shutouts for the next ten games and I'd cringe on every shot wondering if THIS is the one that causes your composure to resemble Jenga.

Stop snickering, Elliott.  You're a backup.  Yeah, I said it.  Top guys are consistent.  You fade harder than Kid 'n Play's hi-tops.

Where was I?  Oh yeah, your inability to deliver consistent goaltending.  Hey, I'm really excited about that.  Glad you looked so strong in relief of Leclaire this game.  Where was that when you played Atlanta?  Oh, that's right, you can't seem to motivate yourself.  It's like you can only play well in spurts... like... a backup.  Backup.

So, listen guys, I know I've been harsh here, but it's only because I love you so much.  I just want to see you play the way we both know you're capable of playing.  And really, I promise all will be forgiven if you do just one thing for me:  BEAT MONTREAL!

Love,
Mark

Sens Killers: Brad Richards, Mike Ribeiro
Both (North) Stars players played excellently in this game.  Ottawa didn't give up much space to anyone early in the game, so they went out and created it themselves.  It's the kind of effort you expect to see from players who are fighting for their playoff lives.

This shot chart is your reward for reading all of that:

P.S.

Sens fans.  Amigos.  Venting your frustration in the middle of a wicked slump is OK... obviously I'm right there with you.  But if you want to give up on a team that has shown it can be great, you're drinking Drano. Keep the faith.

I still love you, but...

I had so much faith in Elliott. Too much, I guess. Can we please, please bring back Not-Martin? I realize his three games aren’t much upon which to base my deep, abiding love for him, but honestly – can he be worse than the current situation? Let me answer that. No. He can’t.

I was at the Thrashers game Thursday night and it broke my heart. Broke it right in two. Today’s game shattered what was left. I have a friend acquaintance jerk I know who claims the Sens were playing beyond their abilities all year, and are really just now starting to show their true colours. PLEASE, Sens. Please. Stop sucking and prove Steve that jerk wrong. I have faith.

We were playing beyond our capabilities

and exceeding expectations, but that is no reason to stop?! This team has potential and has proven this, they just need to get there act together or visit a park or something.

In regards to the goaltending situation I am now perplexed. It is depressing. I thought Leclaire could be the rock but I don’t know. As for Elliot, it seems he plays better under scrutiny, ie Brodeur coming up, Wilson getting fired, perhaps he will respond to the latest dismal performances…Perhaps it is time to shake things up again and bring back Not Martin. I don’t know anymore…I just want some fucking W’s!!!

I've been breaking all of my own rules lately...

But I’m discouraged.

I’m left thinking “What if” right now.

Would Doug Wilson have traded Michalek, Ehrhoff, Cheechoo and Lukowich for Heatley? They dumped the two defenseman for nothing…we could’ve taken them off their hands, and just put Jon and Brad in the minors. That’s where they both are anyway.

What if we had kept Meszaros? Ok, he’s struggled since leaving Ottawa, but he’d still be better than Kuba/Campoli. We traded Andrej for asking too much, and then signed Kuba for 250,000 less than Mezaros got from the Lightning.

Phillips-Karlsson
Meszaros-Volchenkov
Sutton-Ehrhoff

Now that’s a team that could actually move the puck up the ice…

by GelatinousMutantCoconut on Mar 20, 2010 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure on that

I think we did right with Mesza by letting him go to Tampa what I disagree with his what Murray got in return, Kuba, Picard, and 1st rounder (Sharks 26th pick) which ended being Campoli.

Could we not have requested Tampa’s 1st pick which was Hedman that year if I think correctly. Imagine having Karlsson and Hedman and then Cowen down the line also. What a defensive core that would have been in the years ahead.

Campoli is not a first round pick thats for sure which we gave for him, though before the olympic break looked good (like the whole team).

I like Murray’s draft choices but hate some of his trades, this is Murray’s 3rd year as GM, an easy 1st round elimination by the penguins, then no playoffs, whats next???

Keeping the faith, though we have no hot keeper, defense looks a mess I am not expecting to pay alot for playoff tickets this year…..WAKE UP AND TURN THIS AROUND!!

Lets rattle some cages and bring Brodeur up from the Bingo, we need to stop the rot.

Disappointed and nervous

While watching these horrible games of late, I’ve felt that there is an air of negativity surrounding the team. All though most of us Sens fans have been left with no positive thoughts, I feel the desposition of the team as a whole has been negative. Like it’s coming from within. This could be due to no confidence in their abilities to win. It seems that looking back and seeing that they won 14 out of 16 before the break and beat tough teams isn’t enough to spark their confidence.

Cory you need to take action and spark things like you did before the streak. Change something on the ice because status quo isn’t working. It doesn’t mean that the change has to be permanent, but the team needs to be shaken. Maybe bringing Not Martin like most fans are requesting will be enough.

As for the players, you know you have it in you. As Mark Parisi stated in the recap above each player has had the ability to be much better than they have been lately. So what is stopping you? You can’t be great, one of the hottest teams in the league and then just suck?? You owe it to your true fans, who stick by you through thick and thin and deal with jerk friends, to fight really hard to do the best you can do.

As for sens fans.. All we can do is cheer our team even harder and avoid negative thinking (although difficult).. GO SENS GO!!

I just want the Senators to win, okay?

“I believe that children are the future”. Me too. Except Regin is the invisible man out there, along with his entire line (Kovalev and Shannon). Brutal.

I don't understand the calls to bring up Mike Brodeur.

I know that I’m bordering on blasphemy here, but I just don’t get it. It’s not strange, it’s not foolish, it’s dangerous. It’s dumb. Why would we entrust the season to A) a rookie, and B) a career AHLer? Why don’t we put Brian Lee in our number one pairing while we’re at it? He’s won three games in his career. Three fucking games. He’s not going to be a franchise saviour, otherwise he wouldn’t have been through three teams already.

Is this because he kicked off the win streak? Is it because he has a good last name? Is it just some meme that I’m not fully aware of?

Kaspars Daugavins was in the lineup in that game against the Rangers where Brodeur got the shutout. Let’s call him up and give him an A!!!!!!!! Fuck Fisher and Phillps, we need Kaspars!!!

I had never noticed this before, but as a fanbase Sens fans get absolutely retarded when things go sour, even for just a little bit.

by Mike Hurley on Mar 21, 2010 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

I'll answer some of that

First, the obvious starting point for most people: 3-0, 1.00 GAA, .970 SP, 1 SO. Those are good numbers.

Mostly, at least from my opinion, I would be happy with the call up because neither of our goalies are doing anything to warrant playing time. We’ve fired far too many coaches (not that I want Clouston to be axed at all), but this is the equivalent of the fire the coach for the sake of change. It might kick the ass of either Leclaire or Elliott into gear when they see an AHL minor league veteran come in and win a game or two. I’m not advocating that Brodeur play out the rest of the season, but I cannot fathom him playing anywhere near as poorly as the Leclaire/Elliott combination has been playing.

Coming off the Olympic break we figured we could play .500 and tread water to keep in a playoff position. The Senators are in a complete freefall right now, and something – anything – to shake things up should be a welcome option. I’m not saying it’s necessary, because it could well be that when they roll into Montreal it could be the start of a winning record to play out the year. What I’m saying is calling up Mike Brodeur could be beneficial on a shot-term basis.

You are free to disagree with this opinion.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 21, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

3 games is a horrible sample size.

If you looked at a sample size this year, Ottawa was 11-0-0. By that logic, we should have run the season 82-0. You can’t just extrapolate like that without being reasonable, it doesn’t work and makes people look foolish

by Mike Hurley on Mar 21, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

No one expects the team to go on a tear with Brodeur in nets

But Elliott and Leclaire both look terrible right now. If we keep switching back and forth between them waiting for one of them to step up the season could end with us on the outside looking in. We need to explore options, if only to shake things up. Brodeur is the option.

by Rob.D on Mar 21, 2010 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

As the others stated

its not all about his numbers, of course they help and I mean he was sharp and thats exactly what we need right now. Something to build on and he could be it (not saying he is the solution just saying he is a possibility) and we might as well explore it. If he plays like he was before I don’t see how this could be a bad thing and as many said before he cannot really play worse than Elliot and Leclaire have been as of late…

by sens_24 on Mar 21, 2010 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

when Not Martin played his previous games, it forced the rest of the team to re-group because they had a less talented goaltender in net who needed them to play a tighter game (that’s right I called Not Martin less talented, please don’t ban me!) and the team responded by playing more as a group and less as individuals and ‘got back to basics.’ That is what Not Martin brings and the main reason I would want him to be brought back up, it should jolt the rest of the team.

I am AWESOME! Are you?

by Manthong on Mar 21, 2010 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

You, sir, are absolutely right

Wake the whole gang up, have the players regroup, let the other two goalies sit back and look at what a less talented but more focussed goalie can do.

by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 21, 2010 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

So the team won because they knew Brodeur sucked? Shaky logic, that

Mike Hurley is right, bringing up Brodeur now is nonsense and it reeks of desperation. You have to stick with Elliott and Leclaire because the’re the best goalies the team has, and without either of them we’re going nowhere this season.

People think bringing up Brodeur is gunna wake up the team? To me it sends a message that says management and the coaches have no faith in the current roster to right the ship, and because of this they think a guy with 3 (!!!) career NHL games in his career can do a better job.

The players won’t appreciate it, and Elliott and Leclaire sure as hell wont appreciate it. Like I said it’s desperate, and it’s a slap in the face to the players.

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

9 games, 1 win against the worst team in the league, 1 decent performance against the flames..

…isn’t enought to warrant a change to kick start the team’s confidence?? Despite who’s feelings might get hurt? In my opinion it’s enough.

I realize this team wasn’t even projected to make the playoffs. What bothers me and the fans requesting for Brodeur is the fact that this team deteriorated fast and are not getting out of it. A change for 1 or 2 games that gets them a win or two should be enough to I still their confidence. Brodeur is being requested because the most obvious spot to fix is the goal tending because it can’t be much worse.

A slap in the face sometimes is enough to wake someone up. If a player can’t handle a slap in the face then maybe they shouldn’t be in the NHL.

by Los Blancos Chicca on Mar 22, 2010 9:48 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

The thing is, the team has to dig themselves out of this. If they lose 5-2 to New Jersey in game one of the playoffs, are you gonna call up Not Martin then? With this little time left in the season, there’s no calvalry left.

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Mar 22, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I know what you mean

This team needs to get themselves out of it because during the playoffs there won’t be some random change to spark the team..

But how long do you wait for that to happen? Miss the chance of making the playoffs? Or make the playoffs even though it could mean an early exit?

I’m not asking specifically for Not Martin. Just something different… Not Martin is just the obvious option that’s all.

by Los Blancos Chicca on Mar 22, 2010 12:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

The reality here is this team basically needs a slap in the face right now. The fact that Brodeur has more shutouts in 3 games then Leclaire has in 32 games is pretty telling. Bringing Brodeur up is a slap in the face to the goalies and the rest of the team. Coughing up 5 goals a game is unacceptable anywhere. Bringing in Brodeur is a statement saying that the way the rest of the team has played recently that they should be on notice, because obviously the team hasn’t been getting the message.

Ottawa is really in dire straights right now. If they limp into the playoffs without any of their goalies playing well I think Eugene can pretty much count on 2 extra home dates then starts the golf season.

by modsuperstar on Mar 22, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

People who are saying it won't wake up the team

only have to look at the last time he was brought up. It woke up the team and sent a message to the players. Which is what needs to be done. Continue playing Elliot and Leclaire and watching them struggle every night is a better idea? Give them both a rest let them eat some humble pie and lets see how the team reacts seeing there two goalies (starters?) have to sit because of there piss weak play.

by sens_24 on Mar 22, 2010 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

it did wake them up, but let us also remember that it was an emergency situation of a different kind with Leclaire injured and Elliot flu-ridden. This is a dif. sit. seeing as both goalies are healthy. It is just a shame that this convo even need happen due to poor play by two healthy goalies.

I am AWESOME! Are you?

The meme, by the way, is the name Not Martin. That's about it. The rest is attributable to frustration from the fanbase

Also we’ve gotten our assess kicked without Cheechoo in the lineup, so in the spirit of your sarcasm: BRING BACK THE TRAIN!

by Ryan Classic on Mar 21, 2010 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

We bring him up

for the sake of change to get this team into gear. Something needs to be done to wake these players up. And as Classic said, his numbers have been good. i think he will relish the opportunity to play at this level and do so again and give the other players something to think about…

by sens_24 on Mar 21, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder what the cap ramifications of that move would be? All Cheech seemed to do was bring a little hustle and urgency to this team that I think it totally absent since he got sent down.

You're right, Cheechoo was the key. We're lost without him.
