Game 72: Senators @ Stars

Ottawa Senators at Dallas Stars, Mar 20, 2010 2:00 PM EDT

The Senators are back at it Saturday afternoon to take on their brothers in the Western Conference, the Dallas Stars. A couple of pretty good teams through the 2000s who missed the playoffs last season and are struggling after the Olympic break trying to get momentum--in the Senators' case, to stay in the playoffs; in the Stars' case, trying to get in.

Some things I'll be looking for tonight:

  • This should be Pascal Leclaire's opportunity to ease some minds in this city, and string a few good games together. Whether due to poor play or injury, Leclaire hasn't won more than two consecutive games all season, and he'd like to get started on a longer streak tonight.
  • Alex Kovalev doesn't have any points since the Olympics. Will he show up?
As always, join us in the comments for some live, delightful afternoon hockey. Afternoon delight, if you will.

I know

Phoenix is one of the most bandwagon-filled sports cities I’ve ever known. If teams don’t win — BIG — they’re not supported.

Giants, 4-3 in OT

It was 3-1 in something like 5 minutes into the first period. Then the Giants dominated in a way I’ve never seen before. Seriously, I swear there were NO shots against in the last 30 minutes.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 20, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

The Giants' one NHLer was pretty good, too

I know I’m biased, but I was really impressed. He had no idea what to do with crappy teammates. And their goalie: Antero Niittymaki he is not.

Actually their goalie’s parents are South African, which makes me wonder if every hockey player with roots in South Africa plays goal.

Gawddd that was painful. No puck luck.

But learned facts:

The Blazers have a player named Funk and another player named Stretch.

They also have a Ranford who is not a goalie. That confused me so much.

I got home an hour and a half late

Overtime (that lasted 33 seconds, so disappointing) and then waiting to meet Steve Downie’s old roommate. Tired as hell.

So you know what's disappointing?

My first playoff overtime that I’ve seen live ended in 33 seconds after a 20-minute intermission.

Ha, that sucks

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Mar 20, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd feel awesome because I'd seen a triple-overtime game

I swear, though, Kamloops had no shots on goal in the last 30 minutes. Vancouver’s goalie was practically Elliottesque in the first period. 3 goals on something like 4 shots. At one point both goalies had combined for 3 goals and 4 saves.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 20, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's a problem

Giants
Pros: Local team, girlfriend’s cousin is their top forward, possible free tickets
Cons: Coach is an asshole

Chiefs
Pros: Awesome jerseys, Jared Cowen, awesome Jared Cowen jersey
Cons: Cannot wear said awesome jersey in family section, not local team (already have enough of those)

Someone should tell the WHL that

Called everything for two periods and then nothing in the third when it got chippier.

I’ve never seen a guy cross-checked after the whistle, sending him flying over the goalie, followed by a faceoff between the same two players, the guy who threw the cross-check slashes upwards at his face before the puck and no call plus neither one gets thrown out.

According to the OHL’s website and Silver Nuggets, Lehner made 30 saves.

by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 20, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The shot count in our game was something ridiculous like 39-14

And that in no way demonstrated just how dominant the Giants were. Blazers spent most of the game collapsing in and blocking shots. Vintage Dean Brown would have called “scramble!” at least a dozen times.

Oh, and Frantisek Musil’s son plays D for the Giants, too.

He misread the Barch-to-Ribeiro play, though

Hugged the post instead of trying to cut off the centering pass. He was watching the play behind the net and didn’t know that Ribeiro had beaten his man to get free. A stick on the ice would have really helped himself there.

Update on Spezza's goal:

Sickitating. Notice how he pushed off the defender he was covering to gain enough space in front of the net to tip-in the Foligno pass. Awesome.

by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 20, 2010 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

Spezza is easily a hero this game

He has been all over the ice. His first shift he was back to cover for a pinching Phillips. Not in the offensive zone, not in the neutral zone… in his OWN zone. He’s putting the team on his back today.

by Mark Parisi on Mar 20, 2010 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Reassuring to see that he can do that once in a while

I wasn’t sure he was that he was such a dominating player. I’m still not sure, but that first period by the sounds of it, makes me optimistic that his development is really going.

No, this does the opposite

He should have left him in, let him rebound and make a few good saves. Are we going to just run with Elliott? He’s been shitty too.

by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 20, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

I’m pissed. Elliott played WAY WORSE last game. I still think Leclaire is a better goalie, and he’s not being able to string anything together, and we’ve given Elliott all the rope in the world.

Could this Leafs/Habs game be any worse?

It’s bad enough I had to hope the Leafs would win, thus costing the Habs points. But it had to go into overtime, generating that damn loser point. At least Montreal only got the one point, I guess. But now we’re tied with them for sixth, although we’ve got more wins.

by Peter Raaymakers on Mar 20, 2010 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Edit: Tied with them and Philly for fifth, and the Flyers have a game in hand on both teams. Great. I’d rather not play Pittsburgh or New Jersey in the first round.
