Game 70: Toronto Maple Leafs at Ottawa Senators

Toronto Maple Leafs at Ottawa Senators, Mar 16, 2010 7:30 PM EDT

Well, the Senators have played themselves back into a pressure-filled situation.  Our "must-win" watch is at Defcon 2, with the team being told they have to play "with urgency."  Yikes.

Mike Fisher will also miss tonight's game with an upper-body injury.  Yikes.

In the last meeting of these teams, Toronto dominated a flu-ravaged team and won in the shootout, 2-1.  The team only gained a point because of the play of Pascal Leclaire.  Yikes.

Now, some good news:

Nick Foligno returns to the team tonight.  Foligno's gritty style of play has been sorely missed by this team, especially against recent Western Conference opponents.  Foligno also tends to score goals in his first game back, and goals are something the Sens need.  Yay!

Chris Campoli returns, so Brian Lee is out of the lineup.  Yay! (Sorry, Brian.)

This is one of Ottawa's last home games before the playoffs, and they were humiliated in their last outing.  Look for them to come out flying in this game -- a win tonight will really alleviate some of the pressure they've created for themselves.

And, as always, you are invited to join us in the comments section -- we can't be awesome without you!

Hell no

I like the idea of giving Elliott another shot right now

He’s likely the go-to guy in the playoffs and his confidence has been rocked a little. Putting him in a game against the weakest team this side of Saskatchewan on a night when the entire team is using buckets and drinking that oddly-coloured Gatorade could be just what he needs.

Not that the same can’t be said of Leclaire, of course.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 16, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think that's going to happen

Elliott is the goalie with Clouston’s confidence, so that’s who we’re going to see. Leclaire is the more talent goaltender, but the team doesn’t play as well in front of him. Whether that’s due to confidence or just his style, I don’t think it can be argued.

I want Pascal in nets, too. :(

He got a bad rap

One game defined his career in Ottawa, and that sucks. I hate the way he was run out of town, but I don’t see how he could have come back.

by Mark Parisi on Mar 16, 2010 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

He was prone to the same inconsistency as so many of the Senators recent goaltenders

The reason Lalime did well was because he was big, and he had a very strong defence in front of him. He’d let in deflating goals at terrible times, too, but the offence was so dynamic that they’d bounce right back.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s still among the franchise’s strongest goalies in history, but he had a lot of help that made him look good.

I have a theory

Kaberle dealt at the draft for at least one first-rounder, maybe two. Burke realizes you can’t rebuild without good draft picks, and always seems to make out well in these deals. He says he might keep Kaberle, but it would make no sense to do so… he just wants to be able to trade him to whatever team offers him the most.

I’ve got the Tucker hit/goal (not that any Leaf fans like(d) Tucker), the stick toss (nevermind that Alfredsson and Sundin are friends), and for some reason the shot at Niedermayer.

Anyone got more?

Do you think that was conditioning?

He looked like he could have been stronger on the puck and skated away if his legs were fresh.

Mentioning of the Tucker hit by Leafs broadcast

FUCK OFF.

YOU ARE NOT HELPING. YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 16, 2010 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

It is an easy comparison. I'm not happy about it.

But I’m sick and fucking tired (pardon my français) of people bringing up the Tucker hit. Tucker was a huge idiot, still is, and that hit was years ago. Get. Over. It.

This is not helping.

Leighton now hurt for the Flyers?

That could be death to Philadelphia if that’s true.

Graet. My fantasy team goaltending will now read as:

Nicklas Backstrom (DTD)
Cam Ward (DTD)
Michael Leighton (DTD)

Posted before I seen the replay.

It was a bad call, but I’m a little sensitive to reckless hits right now.

I can't believe people blamed Campbell

I especially can’t believe Campoli said Campbell should have been ready for it. The puck was long gone.

No player is bigger than the game, even Ovechkin.
He should be held responsible like everyone else. Unfortunately, he never has.

How is a two game suspension not being held responsible?

Forgoing over $200k in salary?

I’m of the belief that if this wasn’t Brian Campbell or any of the Hawks, you wouldn’t have had as much, if any, problem with it.

by Mike Hurley on Mar 16, 2010 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

It could've been anyone.

That hit has no place in hockey just like Matt Cooke’s hit on Marc Savard.
I’m tired of seeing Avery get suspended for 4 games and placed on probation for a comment but these hits get a slap on the wrist with 2-game suspensions.
It was reckless and shouldn’t happen in the game.

Oh great! He should've realized that Ovechkin would shove him from behind....

after he got rid of the puck. Frankly, I’m kind of sick of hearing blame the victim, rather than blame the person responsible for the act.
Ovechkin has no respect for any player on the ice and is reckless and dangerous. Very reminiscent of a young Eric Lindros back in the day.

I've got the built-in excuse of dating a Canucks fan. And I need a drink.

I’m also watching to see if Tavares does anything. I hope not. He’ll ruin a post for me. One of 4-5 I’ve got in the making.

I know. At least my Regin comparison still works if he gets a point.

Looks like I’ve got a cakewalk day at work tomorrow so my draft one will definitely be done. The other two I’ve got in the works are immune to a day or two.

Okay, drink time.

About Duchesne winning the Calder?

He’s the best forward out of the rookie class, but Myers and Howard should give him a solid run for that trophy.

The happier Edmonton gets. They’re finishing 29th and that’s not really bad because then they’ll get a top 5 pick….Oops.

Will we make the playoffs?

The Rangers are 8 points back (given the number of wins they’re essentially 9 points back) with 12 games left. It would take a monumental collapse but with the number of road games it is (remotely, I hope) possible. If one of NYR/TB/ATL ever got on a run… look out.

And don’t look now, but with another Buffalo loss and a Montreal win, the Habs are only 4 points back of the division lead.

We need to fix that ASAP, cause the playoffs are very close by. This sucks!
