Senators unravel in 5-1 loss to Canucks
The Ottawa Senators lost to the Vancouver Canucks because they couldn't maintain their poise. After goaltender Pascal Leclaire did everything in his power to keep it 1-0 after one period -- in which the Senators were outshot 17-2 -- Jason Spezza made an outstanding individual effort to tie the game at one on a full speed end-to-end rush. The rest of the team responded to this by not playing defense and giving up three unanswered goals, including a brutal shorthanded breakaway to Alex Burrows. There was very little to like about this game outside of Leclaire's play. It's a real disappointment to see how little support his teammates gave him after he put forth top effort even after the game was clearly out of reach.
Sens Zeroes: Alex Kovalev, Erik Karlsson
Alex Kovalev was particularly ineffective tonight, trying to force plays that simply were not there. He added to this mess by loading up on roughing penalties in the second period. Bad enough that he wasn't contributing offensively, but he put his teammates in a difficult spot with untimely penalties. That can't happen. As veteran, he should know better.
Meanwhile, Karlsson got way too confident tonight. Attempting fancy pass after fancy pass, it finally burned him in a big way as his lackadaisical play with the puck got him stripped and led to the shorthanded breakaway goal. He did not respond well, as his confidence was visibly lower after that: with a great opportunity on the short side, he waffled about whether to pass or shoot, finally decided to shoot, and completely whiffed. The result was a shuffleboardesque shot that Roberto Luongo simply put his glove on.
Sens Killers: Mikael Samuelsson, Ottawa's Power Play, Officiating
Ottawa's powerplay was beyond impotent. Much like with Alex Kovalev, if it isn't going to produce offense, it needs to at least not provide it to the other team. They failed at that, giving up a shorthanded goal. Yes, I'm mentioning it again. The SHG was the difference in this game. Ottawa collapsed afterwards.
The Canucks hit Leclaire early and often in this game, and the penalties instead called were:
- Matt Carkner, interference
- Ryan Shannon, hooking
Goalie interference was not called in this game, and it is a mystery to me why not. I am loathe to blame the officials for Ottawa's loss, but the Canucks didn't need any help -- they thoroughly dominated the Senators in this game.
This was exemplified by Samuelsson, who had a two goal, one assist night, and played smart, hard hockey. It's amazing to think a player like that was left off of Sweden's Olympic team.
Shot Chart of Misery:
Yeah, it was that bad.
Game Highlights:
Our own DarrenM was at this game, and has promised to post his thoughts soon, so look forward to that. Next game is Tuesday, at Toronto in the safe confines of Scotiabank Place. This team suddenly needs a win badly.

What a disaster...
I have no idea what this team is…was the winning streak an illusion because when this team looks bad, they look awful.
Poor Leclaire, he deserved a better fate than he had tonight.

Hopefully he gets the next start
He’s looking much better these last couple games, it’d be a shame if they go back to Elliot just because the rest of the team $h!t the bed.
I firmly believe evaluating this team's identity with Brian Lee in the lineup is useless
I will reserve judgement until Campoli/Kuba fills in. Not saying Lee was especially bad out there or anything, but still.
I think Ottawa plays more confidently in front of Brian Elliott. Leclaire was standing on his head in that game and it just seemed like the team failed to respond. With that said, as mentioned, the shorthander was an absolute back breaker for the Sens. While I don’t believe you can fault Leclaire, I think he could have challenged out at that free breakaway puck the way I’ve seen other tenders do in the league. One thing a good goalie will do is cover up for others mistakes and Ottawa really could have used that big save there.

Despite Ottawa being clearly outplayed in every aspect
I too want to chime in on the officiating. Some calls and non calls had me screaming at the TV, including;
- the even-up, marginal roughing call on Carkner after receiving a brutal stick to the face,
- the blatant after-the-whistle slapper at Leclaire on the aforementioned play,
- the glaringly obvious 6 on 4 advantage Vancouver enjoyed for a few seconds before the offending Canuck dashed back to the bench in front of two officials
These were hard to swallow, as they occured when the Sens were still in the game. Whatever.
And Jesus… could team Sweden ever have used Samuelsson. What an omission!
As much as I'd like to, I won't blame the loss on the officiating
But it sure didn’t help Ottawa win.

I wanted this game to be an Ottawa win

Hopefully Karlsson learns from this
He got cocky last night and paid the price. He’s a smart kid though – hopefully this is a major learning experience for him and his next game will be much better.
Apparent;ly he already has
At least, according to the announcers last night, that was the case. Still, he’s a rookie, so mistakes like last night’s are to be expected. He has played so well that it’s easy to forget how much inexperience he still has.

Apparently he's already moved out!
But anyways, I think he’ll be fine. He has shown an ability all year to learn and improve, and I think that with Kuba back soon some pressure will be off!

I'll post a story or fanpost on the experience soon
needless to say, I was extremely underwhelmed by everything outside of Leclaire’s play (game could’ve been 8-1) and Spezza’s goal (among the greatest things I’ve ever witnessed).

I didnt even occur to me that you would be at the game — silly me. I’d would have bought you a beer after if I had known.
Ah, it's a shame!
You, Ryan Classic, and I will have to get together for a Sens fans in Van beer sometime in the fall (I’m in Victoria right now).

Oh Boy
I saw the game live too. I was rocking an alfie jersey.
This was one of the worse games to see ottawa play I think. Very few things went right. AK27 should have been benched in the third. He was just floating around being a dink. Very frustrating to see.
DarrenM just mentioned this but it’s true. Leclaire play is the only thing that didnt make it 8-1. Keep in mind, it was 1-1 until the dam broke in the second. The sens left Leclaire out there to hang. With that said, most of the goals scored on him were glove side. Leclaire needs to work on that to become a better goalie.
Spezza goal was great and he was able to make a couple good passes during the game. But still you kind of expect more out of him. Keep in mind vancouver’s top shutdown dman was out of the line up.
The rest was just frusterating to see. Alfie had a bad game and he’s still the heart and soul of the team. Vancouver really put the pressure on Karlsson anytime he had the puck. He needs to make teams pay when they over commit on him. He also needs to work on his one timer. He missed a good chance to score because of that. Still he’s playing great for a 19 year old. It’s just our fate, as a team, is tied heavy in how well he plays.
The Vancouver fans around me, my buddy included, had a good time at my expense. All in a good Canadian way that is. Nice people.
Agreed.
Canucks fans put up a great atmosphere, and it was a pleasure to be there.
