Game 59: Ottawa Senators @ Toronto Maple Leafs

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs, Feb 6, 2010 7:00 PM EST

Hey Ottawa Senators, it's me, Darren. This is some win streak you've been on, eh? Eleven games is far more than I ever could have dreamed of, so I feel a bit selfish asking for one more. But to be completely honest, you simply cannot lose this game tonight. Yes, I know that there's that guy from the Stanley Cup Finals in net, and that Phaneuf guy probably wants to kill Jarkko Ruutu for that little tripping incident (H/t to The 6th Sens). I also understand those Leafs are going to be in crush-kill-destroy mode after suffering an embarrassing meltdown against the New Jersey Devils last night. There is some serious adversity to overcome, but you absolutely have to overcome it.

You see, you simply cannot let them win. This win streak cannot end in Toronto, because if it does, people everywhere will say "Wait, they lost to Toronto?" It will nullify the impressiveness that is an eleven game winning streak. Furthermore, Chemmy, PPP, and JaredFromLondon will probably come on here and heckle us, and I simply can't take that kind of antagonism.

I'm sure all Senators fans agree with me, so let's see some of that discussion on this big game in the comments.

A Senators victory would put them 4th in the East. If the Sabres lose, it puts them in the division lead. Wow.

Interesting fact for tonight's game.

It features the league’s worst PP against the league’s worst PK.

So it’s the unstoppable force against the immovable object?

Good God

Anybody who thinks Luongo should start over Brodeur at the Olympics should take a mirror, look into it, then take it, and smash it over thier heads.

It’s Brodeur unless he falls apart and even then it would be Fleury as I’d rather not see Kane do this against Luongo at the Olympics.

Luongo > Fleury

I can’t believe you just implied that Fleury is the second best goalie in Canada.

by Mike Hurley on Feb 6, 2010 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

I live in Vancouver

And I am honestly, swear to god, fucking sick of this conversation. I’m sick of this stupid Olympic team. Go Sweden for all I care.

by Ryan Classic on Feb 6, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

This is precisely why Luongo shouldn’t have been picked because with his attitude (and the story itself) he’ll become a distraction to the team.

"Negative energy is better than no energy at all"- "Iron" Mike Keenan

by hawks61 on Feb 6, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

The story itself is a story that has very little to do with Luongo and a lot to do with the intense scrutiny put on the Olympic team in this country

It could have been between five peewee goalies and it’d get the same level of airtime devoted to it.

If you’re going to pick apart the team for “bad attitudes” then consider some of the other players on the team, like Dany Heatley. That’s a far worse apple.

by Ryan Classic on Feb 6, 2010 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

Dany Heatley…..let’s just move on from him altogether.

by hawks61 on Feb 6, 2010 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

That play was insane and honestly someone should have done something after the 3rd shot

I’m not a Luongo apologist by any means, but I don’t buy into this one. What he needed to do more than anything else was agree to sit out a game. He did that against Ottawa and came back strong this morning.

by Ryan Classic on Feb 6, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

Could he not have addressed his teammates in the dressing room and not to the media. Lead by example, not words.

Not so much on the Norris Trophy part

He was suggesting Phaneuf should have beaten out Lidstrom in 2007-08 because he had more goals, more hits, and more fights.

Except that year, Lidstrom had as many assists as Phaneuf had points, Lidstrom was +40 and Phaneuf was +12, and Lidstrom’s team won the President’s Trophy with 115 points, while Phaneuf’s finished in seventh in the West with 94.

Milbury criticizing trades

Credibility problem

True story

I can’t believe no players from that trade remain on our team.

Oh, Spezza is still on our team?

I couldn’t tell tonight!

ZING

Nice recovery.

Seriously, though, Spezza’s playing better than a lot of guys. You just haven’t noticed him because of all of Ottawa’s PK time.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 6, 2010 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I know

He’s trying, but that line is utterly shut down right now. We really need RKN to open up some ice for the other two lines.

We still have Hennessy and Wiercioch

Our only hopes to preserve that trade’s possible silver lining.

Don't worry, Peter

Ryan already bit on my joke.

That and it’s only been 49 years since the last one and it’s Chicago, a city that boasts a team with a 102 year drought in baseball futility.

And then after losing to the Devils in the Finals the year after signs with that team’s nemesis.

That's a strange comment. There's no precedent for that.

I’ve said for awhile that I’m sure Marian Hossa has a clause in his contract that says he can be traded to any team that beats his in a playoff series.

Metallurg Magnitogorsk?

That’s a finals I’d watch

Rec'd

You’re pretty sure that’s where he’s headed? The K?

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 6, 2010 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

It's just my opinion

But I don’t see how any team in the NHL is going to sign him for $10M+. That’s KHL money.

It depends on how stupid Chicago wants to be again this off-season.

With Ovechkin, Crosby, and even Malkin's salaries below 10

I’d be upset if my team signed more one-dimensional player than those guys for more money. If that’s truly his price point, I don’t think it will be met in the NHL. Of course, he might have been trying to price his way out of Atlanta.

by Mark Parisi on Feb 6, 2010 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, one of those two

If he wanted the money he’s KHL bound, if he wanted a change he might go anywhere.

God damn it

That absolutely sucked

An 11-game win streak ends at the hands of the Leafs? Say it ain’t so.

I hope you people in Calgary don’t get mad at me. You already have everyone in Ottawa pissed why not the rest of the nation.

I was mocking Don Cherry and his plea for nobody in Calgary to get mad at him for talking about Stamkos and Tampa Bay.

Dear Don,

Steve Yzerman wanted experienced players that have played in pressure situations and can play 200-ft. The only sniper that was included was Heatley and there was no way Stamkos was going to, or should have, beaten him off that team.

Now defend Doughty while talking experienced players

(I kid. I already mentioned that I’m sick of Olympic talk. Get the tournament going already.)

He’ll anchor some PP time like Heatley. That’s why he’s on it.
