Senators sign Jared Cowen to entry-level contract

The Ottawa Senators announced today that they have signed 6'5", 215lb defenseman Jared Cowen to an entry-level contract. Cowen was Ottawa's first pick at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, selected ninth overall in the first round.
Cowen is captain of the WHL's Spokane Chiefs. He leads the team in plus/minus with +17, and also has 6 goals and 13 assists in 39 games.

One question is on my mind...
Why now? Why not wait until the season was over? Why the rush?

I had the same question
I bet it’s because Murray expects him to make the team next year and needs to know what kind of cap hit he’ll have so he can figure out how much space he has to play with.

Good call
I figured it would have to do with that, and perhaps Volchenkov negotiations, or something.

I think he can also play for Bingo when Spokane's season finishes
Doesn’t that often happen with these guys? He’ll join Bingo for a possible playoff run, or something.

I think you are right Petey
a lot of guys do it. It’d be good for him
What playoff run?
Bingo is unlikely to make the playoffs, I’m afraid.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I'm sure it's budgetary

Could be bargaining, but not just for Volchenkov
It could be a move to show Lee, Picard, and Campoli that they’re not in any position to make huge contract demands of this team, because we’ve got three solid defenders (Phillips, Kuba, Carkner) locked up for next season, plus two first-rounders (Karlsson, Cowen) looking for spots, too. Plus Volchenkov. So maybe it’s a way of saying these guys had better take low-salary, two-way deals, or get nothing.

Are they in a position to make huge contract demands?
They’re all RFAs… don’t they pretty much have to take what they’re offered or hope for a trade or offer sheet?

in theory, no
see hossa, havlat etc…
but in practice maybe, since they are obviously not the caliber of player as those two.

I'd love to see Campoli threaten a holdout

Jersey Number
Any idea what number he will have for his jersey?
I'd assume #2
That’s what he uses in Spokane. I think he was 20 for Team Canada, but that’s because Teubert had #2.
