2010 Olympics open thread, day 17: Canada vs. USA gold-medal game
Two Olympic events on tap for today: The men's 50 km mass-start cross-country skiing race at 12:30 p.m. EST, but the main event is going to be the men's hockey gold-medal game between Canada and the United States at 3:15 p.m. EST.
The USA took the round-robin matchup between the two teams by a 5-3 score, and Ryan Miller has backstopped them to a perfect 5-0 record so far, allowing only six goals in those five games. Since the last meeting, though, Canada's woken up in the tournament, quickly ousting Germany before dominating Russia and then squeaking by Slovakia to get to the gold-medal game. So often in meetings between these two teams, though, past games won't likely matter; there's going to be plenty on the line.
Game time is 3:15 p.m. EST, join us in the live thread during the game to talk about it.

CANADA WINS GOLD!!!
Oh and Luongo gets the shut-out to out-duel Miller.
Iginla scores from Weber and Crosby mid-way through the third to make it 1-0.
Toews scores an empty netter from Richards and Keith in the final minute.

Wow, your prediction is a lot different than mine, heh.

There's no way Canada can win this game
They have like… one clutch player, and way too much pressure to win. Plus, the US team is going to outwork them.

I'm going to refer to you as Glenn Beck for the rest of the day.
You make about as much sense as he does.
Your insult is meaningless to me
I’ve never listened to Glenn Beck and I barely know the name.

HEY REMEMBER WHEN YOU SAID THIS, MARK?
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
And here we go...
Time for Canada to kick the living hell out of those Jesus lovin’ dingbats. This is “OUR GAME” and the Uh…mericuns aren’t going to win this at all as long as Canada continues to play their style of game.
Toews will check the top line into submission like he has all tournament and expect to finally score his first in the tournament. Crosby will finally live up to the hype and have a huge game with 1 and 2 today. Roberto Luongo will make a timely save to win it in the end, Canada wins and everyone goes home happy and the GOLD stays right where it belongs.
GO CANADA GO! IT’S TIME FOR OUR XIV GOLD MEDAL!

Another top 5 finish for Canada today
Even though we fell short of winning the most medals, it’s hard to be disappointed. The most golds ever for Canada plus a ton of 4th and 5th place finishes. A great games for our athletes.

I consider the Olympics a great success
Forget the Brits or whoever else shitting all over us for how it went, Canada did well. The events were good, our performance was good, and we did well despite plenty of disappointing finishes for some highly touted athletes.
The overall medal count wasn’t there, but the huge gold medal count is something that’s pretty amazing.
by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 28, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions
I still hate Crosby, but he was way more impressive to me in this tournament than he normally is
Quite interesting that once again, all of Canada’s big guns were quiet in a big game. The Sharks can’t like anything they saw out of this tournament except for the play of Dan Boyle.
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
I think they can like Marleau
But they’ve got to be concerned with Thornton being largely invisible at crunch times, Heatley being a passenger (despite his point totals, he was a passenger), and Nabokov getting lit up.
Like you said, though, Boyle was awesome.
