2010 Olympics open thread, day 15: Canada vs. Slovakia

The biggest draw of the day today is, of course, two men's hockey semi-finals: Canada takes on Slovakia at 9:30 p.m. EST, and the USA faces off against Finland at 3:00 p.m. EST. Perhaps not the four teams many would have picked heading into the tournament, but just about everyone acknowledged that seven of the teams in the competition had a very real chance to get a medal. Jarkko Ruutu is the lone Ottawa Senator left standing with medal hopes.

Perhaps the biggest 'draw' of the day, though, will come the women's curling gold-medal game, as Cheryl Bernard and the Canadian squad take on Sweden for the Olympic title. Bernard squeaked by Switzerland 6-5 in the semi-finals, so they're looking for a stronger performance when it counts. The two teams met once in round-robin play, with Canada winning 6-2.

Another six medals are going to be dished out, so Canada's got another shot to have another great day at the tournament.

Jump in to the open thread through the day, and especially during the Canada/Slovakia game, and contribute to the discussion. Day's schedule is after the jump.

Meh... not bad

He’s cheap, it’s not a long-term commitment, and he’s effective as a second-line fill-in. I thought he’d be part of a trade—we have a lot of forward now—but he might be a good asset moving forward.

He's so much fun to watch

… and I guess he is only 34 years old. He’s probably got some years left in him, but I think it would need to be two-way for the league minimum.

(Maybe not two-way, although that would be great for roster flexibility.)

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 26, 2010 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

We're in trouble if he's filling in on the 2nd line

Best case scenario is he doesnt get in the way. But otherwise he’s a relatively innefective player; speedy obviously but mediocre at most every other aspect of the game.

I would have preferred we wait to see if he can contribute down the stretch before making the commitment.

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Feb 26, 2010 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

Filling in is a relative term

You’re taking it as “we have no players to slot into the second line,” and I think we’re taking it as “if our second line faces injuries, he’s not a horrible substitute on a temporary basis.”

SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!! - ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Feb 26, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

In theory he could fill in on any line, but then again so could Martin St. Pierre

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Feb 26, 2010 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

He seems like a minor-league call-up, ideally

He’s not really effective in third- or fourth-lines, but he can fill in on second-line spot duty in the event of an injury. Similar, in a lot of ways, to St. Pierre, as you said, but I think Clouston really likes him. If the coach thinks he can use him, the GM would be well-served to keep him around.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 26, 2010 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

It's 675K

It’s a no-risk deal. Shannon either plays for the Sens or is traded for a 6th rounder, or something. Cheap deal for a guy who has proven that he can play at this level. I don’t know how he’s proven that he’s mediocre at most every other aspect of the game — he’s great on the cycle and a strong forechecker. He’s not a second line player of course, but as a third/fourth liner he does his job well.

Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.

by DarrenM on Feb 26, 2010 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

Why not save the money and put it towards signing a better player though?

You can always pick up a guy like Shannon as a last minute signing late-summer, pre-training camp. There’s zero impetus for Murray to make this deal now, which is why I find it strange.

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Feb 26, 2010 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

Same as signing Cowen a couple months ago

It lets him know how much cap space he has to work with.

by Rob.D on Feb 26, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

Wouldn't he have a better idea of this if he waited till summer?

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Feb 26, 2010 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's more a case of preparedness

He knows he’s not going to be a major player in the summer, so better to get all the minor pieces in place now so he knows exactly what he has to go shopping with.

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Feb 26, 2010 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

BM is handicapping himself a little bit at a time, is what this comes down to

I don’t see how nickle and diming his cap space down is being prepared; I think it’s being foolish.

Making sure the major pieces are in place first should always be the priority; like I said before guys like Shannon can be had for cheap every summer, if you think you need them (which I don’t with Shannon).

If you need a $625K (or 675K as the case may be) player, you can budget that out when negotiating with priority free agents.

I can only assume this move means he’s very close with Volchenkov, otherwise signing Shannon is plain foolish.

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Feb 26, 2010 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

League minimum salary is $500k. Because of this, the critical question becomes "Is Shannon worth $175k over an AHLer?

by Mike Hurley on Feb 26, 2010 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

Aren't free agents in the summer overpriced?

Sort of a player’s market instead of a manager’s.

by Rob.D on Feb 26, 2010 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

That depends, sometimes

If you’re looking for game-breakers, yes, but if you’re looking for depth guys, not always—especially now, with so many young players joining NHL rosters and so much reasonable skill available. You can get pretty good talent for little, if you want to. See: Dean McAmmond.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 26, 2010 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

It's not that he's handicapping himself, he's putting pieces in place

Whether he does it now or later, he needs a depth forward who can offer offence in a pinch. Shannon does that.

He needed a sixth or seventh defenceman. Carkner does that.

He needed to sign Cowen to a deal. It’s a two-way deal.

Bottom line is that he just gets another check mark on his to-do list.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 26, 2010 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see that as too probable...

It’s not like we would have iced a team with 11 forwards and 5 defence… the difference between Carkner and Shannon and two league-minimum players is $325k, not exactly make-or-break on the free agent market.

And I think that $325k is worth it given the comfort these players have in Ottawa’s system, and the comfort level the coach has in using them.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 26, 2010 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

What FAs do you think they can pursue, though?

They’d have to move a ton of players to go after someone like Kovalchuk. They’re already priced out of the range of the star players. Carkner and Shannon’s combined $1.3M isn’t going to be the difference between landing someone like Kubina and not once July 1st comes around.

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

My concern is more the roster spot than the money

Maybe one of Keller, St. Pierre, Z. Smith, or even Daugavins will be ready to make the jump to the NHL next season, and provide more than Shannon on a given night. And that’s just looking at the prospects we have here; some college, junior, or Euro prospects might deserve a good look, too.

It’s similar to what happened to Lee—he was kept down because of his two-way contract more than his weak play, because Campoli and Picard were intermittently awful through most of the season.

The Conservatives have had plenty of scandals of their own. And I’m not sure how you can say he’s done what he said he’d do; Harper wanted to make government more transparent, and he’s routinely tried to muzzle and control the media, and proroguing parliament to kill bills forcing him to reveal government documents regarding prisoner transfer in Afghanistan is about as far as you can get from transparency.

And who said anything about the Liberals?

Without mistakes, curling would be a pretty boring game.

And without mistakes from the Swedish skip, Canada would have lost this a long time ago. To make your biggest mistake of the game, and have that result in the opponent tying the game to give you the hammer in an extra end, you’re pretty good at timing your mistakes well.

Not from what I'm hearing and it usually goes to the team that wins.

TOEWS is going to win it if Canada wins.

So I’m watching the replay. Yay.

I was there for 4 months on a work visa

The card I got clearly states: ONLY VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT UNDER AUTHORIZATION BY HOMELAND SECURITY. Dudes have my fingerprints and retina scans on file. Good times.

Oh yeah, Rochester

Home of the Tim Horton’s with XL cups that you could club baby seals with. Crap town, but some nice people and horrible diners.

For sure!

Everyone who stops by at least likes hockey, so what’s not to like about them? Even rivals are fine as long as they’re funny. There’s a humorous atmosphere here instead of an antagonistic one, and I try to keep it that way. People don’t have to be frequent posters or have the same opinions as me… we all love the game, right?

I thought it was pretty funny

And it really nailed the university residence situations, but I found some of the voices and especially Cal’s to be annoying.

I think I probably watched it too early in my university career to really appreciate it.

It's a direct response to Ryan Lambert (no relation) at Two-Line Pass.

His Twitter picture is a near identical CANADA SUCKS in black letters one right now. I’ve also made one that says LAMBERT SUCKS.

I actually stopped following Lambert because I got sick of his pro-American propaganda. It went from being funny to being incredibly irritating. I’ll probably start following him again when the tournament is over.

Same thing happened during the WJC.

I went curling today!

It was awesome. I ended up in a tiebreak and we had to draw to the button. I drew for my team, and won against a girl who actually is a curler. she was PISSED.
