2010 Olympics open thread: Day 13
Big day today for Canada, and it basically boils down to one event: The men's hockey team takes on Russia in the quarter-finals. It was expected to be a gold-medal game, but instead one of the two most highly-touted teams will finish no better than fourth in the men's hockey tournament.
Women's bobsleigh also gets into the medal-giving, and Canada's goes into the third run of four in the lead. Medals will also be dished out for ladies' giant slalom, men's 4x10km cross-country skiing, ladies' aerials freestyle skiing, short-track speed skating, and the ladies' 5000m (!) speed skating.
Full schedule after the jump, stick around through the day and offer your thoughts in the live thread.

Wow
Jonas Hiller was insane that first period.

Well, like the talking heads are trying to explain,
The camera doesn’t look straight down. The puck has to completely cross the plane that is drawn between the crossbar and the line. With the puck that high in the air it would have been at least partially under the crossbar if it was crossing the plane.
I'm a sadist I guess.
This play by play guy sucks too. Hey you know what most of them have in common?! Sportsnet.
Man... the Swiss must have really brought it
Too bad they couldn’t get shots in that last 100 seconds. Good game.

They couldn't get shots all game
When they had 8 shots, they were by only three players. Amazing.
Wait until they get some offensive weapons going through the junior pipeline. Niederreiter’s eligible for the WCs, I think.

Speedskating looks so effortless when you watch it from afar
But the grimace on their faces as they cross the finish line is worth a thousand words. It shows you just how difficult it is.

I hope Pronger pounds him with a legitimate-yet-deadly hit today.

So I've asked this here and there, but potential post-game downtown celebration jerseys. Which are fouls, which are not, and which should I wear?
Choices:
- Ottawa Senators pre-RBK black third with gold trim (autographed)
- Ottawa Senators RBK red home
- CSKA Moscow #10 Pavel Bure jersey circa 1992
- Ottawa 67’s RBK white road
- Colorado Avalanche pre-RBK white #23 Milan Hejduk
- Spokane Chiefs pre-EDGE white #2 Jared Cowen (autographed)
I wouldn't risk any of the autographed ones

Hahaha, is that a Joe Buck impression?
Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.
I wish I had a working BlackBerry data plan right now. No dice. Have fun, everyone.

Sure
But I don’t get off work until 4:30 PM so I’ll be late. Hopefully some more medals come Canada’s way.

Canada had a wild day today, for sure.

Four medals and a sick hockey win?
Not too shabby. I wonder how we’ll beat that tomorrow…

Tomorrow there are some big events...
Hopefully Canada does well in ’em.

Good day for Canada!
Won a few and were set up nicely for curling and hockey. Looking forward to tomorrow night’s gold medal showdown. Go Canada.
NBC just showed an interview with Ovechkin
He was MAD. It was great.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED IT
WHAT DID HE SAY?!?!
by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 24, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions
“Why can’t Canada throw out a Filip Kuba-esque defender that I can easily beat?”
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Highlights:
On how he thought Team Canada played: “They had a good 10 minutes […]”
On how he feels: “How do you think I feel?”
On if his team was caught by surprise by Canada’s physicality: “Well, they have a good team, what do you expect?”
These quotes don’t do it justice. The man was absolutely seething. It was great.

Alfie just drew a penalty while on the PK
That’s right, he’s awesome no matter what.

I dunno, but I'm kind of stunned that they're losing going into the third
I shouldn’t be that surprised — Slovakia beat Russia and has a heck of a team, but I still figured this one was in the bag for Sweden for some reason.

Never assume something's in the bag in this tournament
Downtown was kind of neat. I got a lot of cheers for my 67’s jersey, which I wasn’t expecting.

You didn't go with the Brodeur idea?

I watched all four games today.
By the end of the Slovakia/Sweden game, I’ll admit I was rooting for the Slovaks so Alfie can get a few days off.
