Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

2010 Olympics open thread: Day 10

The big game is today: Canada takes on the United States (7:40 p.m. EST) in the Battle of the Colonies. The winner will take control of Group A and get a bye into the quarter finals, while the loser will have to go through the qualification round. Also on the table to rivalry Sunday is the Battle of the Bloc (Russia vs. Czech Republic, 3:00 p.m. EST), and the Battle of Scandinavia (Sweden vs. Finland, midnight EST). All in all, it makes for an exciting day in international hockey, with all five Ottawa Senators in action: Anton Volchenkov, Milan Michalek, Filip Kuba, Jarkko Ruutu, and Daniel Alfredsson.

The curling round robin continues today, as well, as both Canadian teams try to preserve their perfect records: The women are playing the USA and China, while the men come off a huge win over Great Britain to take on Switzerland.

Pop in and talk about all the games, and all the event in our open thread. Full Sunday schedule after the jump.

Man, so stoked!

They should all be good games, too, which is very exciting. Plus there’s curling to fill in the gaps between hockey games!

Did you see his goatee in the hockey news?

there was an article on their line, and he had this dirtbag goatee… it was so filthy. But I suppose fitting.

Ohhh facepalm Canada!

The last 2 days have been wonderous for the Canadian athlete’s.
One gets disqualified for not arriving and being prepared in time, the other is in 2nd and smashes their way down the course to end up 5th, the Bobsleigh team is in 1st before it does it’s impression of the Jamacan team, and now the ski-cross guy has a shot at the Gold and ends up with his face full of snow.
Also, let’s not forget how Canada had 2 of the 5 skaters in the 1000m short-track and still ended up with no medal. Unbelievable.

I put all three on him

I get he likes playing the puck, and loves that there’s no trapezoid, but he’s screwing the defence up when he leaves the net. Most defencemen don’t know how to respond to that, and he’s not doing it well anyway.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 21, 2010 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

The 2nd goal was totally his fault

Though his D have been letting guys crash the net and hang around in the crease all game.

by Andrew J on Feb 21, 2010 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

Today, Brodeur is awful

I agree that Crosby is better than Toews, ans he’s playing well tonight, too. But Brodeur has been awful, and I would have pulled him after the second goal if I were coaching. (Although I’m not, and there might be good reason for that.)

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 21, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, reactionary... a reaction to Brodeur not being in the right place for the game

He wasn’t settled mentally, it was obvious by his performance. The team wasn’t ready, either, and USA’s speed was making Canada look slow for the first five minutes.

What do you mean ‘perceived circumstances’? Are there circumstances that you know of that I don’t?

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 21, 2010 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Peope think this game is the biggest of the tourney for Canada.

Why? USA isnt the best team, they arnt the biggest test for Canada. People are hung up on it because its against the Americans, and Americans are Canada’s #1 insecurity.

Russia is the biggest matchup out there for Canada; hopefully it happens. Its a shame people will get so down on the team for this loss, because really, its not that big of a deal. We haven lost anything yet.

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Feb 21, 2010 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Is what I meant by, 'perceived circumstances'

Probably sounded condescening, but its not how I meant it. Just frustrated that people hyped up this game like the be-all end-all of the tourney

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Feb 21, 2010 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

It's the biggest game so far

Canada would have had a buy to the quarters if they’d won. With the loss, they’ll have to go through a qualification game, and they’ll have to win that to get a chance at a medal game.

The Americans adds to that, but it would have been a big game no matter the opponent.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 21, 2010 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but that's how he was taught to do things

The guy’s been groomed from his early teens on how to deal with the media, and that means really offering meaningless answers. I watch what he does on the ice to give me an indication of the kind of player he is, though, and he’s a damn good player.

I have to agree with Peter

You can’t fault players for giving sports cliches when they get eaten alive for giving any interesting quote.
