Silver Nuggets: Clouston getting more love, All-Star Game in 2012?
Chill, knuckledragger, it's not all about you. Some of it's about the Ottawa Senators:
- Cory Clouston was called up to Ottawa a year ago today. His record so far is a very impressive 50-32-8 since then, and he's getting lots of love--Jack Adams-type love? Maybe. (Citizen, Sens)
- Sounds like Jesse Winchester is back, so either he or Shean Donovan will be a healthy scratch tomorrow in Buffalo against the Sabres.
- Apparently the Senators are going to make a bid for the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, which would coincide with Ottawa's 20th anniversary. Hockey fans from all over the USA have already reserved a flight to Ohio. (Citizen)
- Erik Karlsson is awesome. (Sun)
- The Senators are hitting their stride at a pretty good time. Or what would be a pretty good time most seasons, if not for the momentum-killing two week Olympic break. (THN)
- Did Ottawa miss out on Dion Phaneuf, or was Bryan Murray wise to avoid the risk? SenSay thinks it's the latter. (SenSay)
- UPDATE: For the second time this season, Senators' prospect Mike Hoffman has been named the QMJHL's Offensive Player of the Month. In ten games, he had 7G-12A-19P. He's second in the league with 33 goals on the season, and leads the league in game winning goals with 11. In case you missed it, you can read our exclusive interview with Hoffman right here. That Hoffman interview is worth reading
It’s great stuff, Peter. It’s also nice to see him producing at such a high level. Hopefully it translates into long term success. We sure need the offensive depth.

These 3 days in between games is killing me.
I am bored at work. Thankfully there are Silver Nuggets!
Agreed!
Unfortunately I will miss most of tomorrow’s game as I have yoga… grrr.

In regards to Phaneuf...
as GN stated no good reason to chase rainbows. And I would rather sign Volchenkov than take on Phaneufs contract.
Of course
The diference is that trading for Phaneuf would have cleared some salary for the Sens. Re-signing Android gives the team fewer cap dollars to work with because they haven’t moved any players.

Presumably
In the offseason Murray could trade one of Neil/Ruutu/Kelly to free up some cap space. I can’t see why one of those guys wouldn’t garner a pick or prospect (or both).

Why would that be our move?
I think more likely would be a buyout of Cheechoo to free up cap space. That buyout would free up (I think) $1.5M; trading Neil would be $2M, Kelly would be $2.125M, and Ruutu would be $1.3M. I think as it stands now, those three are until at least the deadline next season.

Don't forget any moves that we make this year
I fully expect some kind of package like Lee and Shannon for a big winger, if it’s possible. I’m still hoping for Peter Mueller. Darren Dreger wrote today “Phoenix expects a good young roster player or prospect in exchange for Mueller […]” and I think Shannon and Lee fit that bill. Plus, he’s an RFA so he’d come cheap.
Still, with Volchenkov to re-sign, Foligno, Regin, Winchester, Picard and Campoli as RFAs next year, Murray is going to have to move some money. Cheechoo almost certainly has to be bought out and sadly, Kelly becomes a cap casualty with Z Smith being so much cheaper.
At least, that’s how I see it. It’ll be interesting to see what Murray has up his sleeve.

With a buyout
you’re still paying salary. The Senators have not made as much money this year as in years past, and Eug paid a ton of cash to Heatley.
I don’t think he’s too keen on paying people to NOT play for the Sens.

Who knows, a nice playoff run might sort those issues out. Hopefully the Sens can keep selling out their building now that the team is back to being respectable.

Eugene and Brian
Those two definitly don’t wanna pay anyone else to play for another team. Unless I’m mistaken, they’re still paying emery to be injured. I don’t expect them to move anyone except Kelly or Ruutu, unless something ridiculous comes up for volchenkov. This winning streak has shown that the sens have the necessary depth to contend in the play offs.

As far as I recall they’re still paying Emery for the next 2 years beyond this one. He signed a 3 years contract, got bought out after 1, so the Sens are paying 1/3 of his cap hit(because he was younger then 25 I think) over the span of twice the remaining term, which would be 4 years.
Don’t forget they are also paying John Paddock and Craig Hartsburg not to coach.

Money well spent.
Although I think Paddock’s contract might be off the books now, because he’s got a job in the AHL. His contract with Ottawa would likely have to be absorbed for them to have given Philly permission to hire Paddock. (I think he’s with the Flyers’ affiliate.)
