2010 Olympics open thread: Day 8-9
Up for discussion in today's open thread? Friday's prime-time matchup: The upstart Latvians, led by AHL star Kaspars Daugavins, take on the defending Olympic bronze-medal winners from the Czech Republic, featuring Milan Michalek and Filip Kuba. Plus, Jarkko Ruutu and the Finns take on the Christoph Schubert-less German National team; what will they do without his breakaway prowess?
But I might be more excited to see Canada take on Denmark in both men's and women's curling.

How'd the game go?
I heard it was 3-2 for Sweden. It’s crazy how competitive these games are.

4-2 in the end
Alfredsson closed it off with a few seconds left from the Sedins.
Sweden was up 3-0 midway through the second until Belarus got a decently lucky goal. Then they scored a second in the third period and piled on the pressure. ALMOST scored on a shot that jettisoned off a crossbar behind Gustavsson.

Is this tournament is starting to get batshit crazy or what?
The Swiss, the Slovaks, and now Belarus takes Sweden to the brink.
Let the Olympic spirit live in everyone.
GO CANADA GO!
Congratulations to Alexandre Bilodeau on being the first Canadian to win on home soil.
GOLD MEDAL: Nesbitt in the 1000m Long-Track Speedskating
Well, Sweden is still unbeaten in regulation, and so are the US
We need a Canada win over the US, Germany over Finland, and then Finland over Sweden and we have giant toppling.

Canada will beat the U.S.
Although the Czech. Republic/ Russia game will be very interesting to say the least as well as Sweden/Finland. More great hockey to come that’s for sure.
Don’t be suprised if someone like the U.S. or the Czech. Republic don’t get upset before this tournament is done and that a weak sister like Switzerland makes it to the semi-finals.
Let the Olympic spirit live in everyone.

I adore the Swiss, and not just because of Severin Blindenbacher
Okay, mostly because of Severin Blindenbacher.
“Canada will beat the U.S.” is exactly the kind of attitude that gets teams beaten. Arrogance and showmanship. I say all bets are off on that one.
Might be the only time I really cheer for Canada all tournament.

O.K. then....
I want Canada to beat the U.S. That better? :)

Don't mock, I'm going to curling next week.

Don't play like a pussy and you'll be fine.
Nothing drives me more insane than seeing 7 guards put up so the team can force-blank the end.
I love the more aggressive skips, but sometimes guards are the right strategy
I’m with you, though.

Martin with another 5 ender
Back-to-back games with one. That’s incredible really.

Tell me about it. Martin is killing them all.
Now if the Men’s hockey team can follow suit it would make my heart beat a little easier, becuause last night’s tilt was a little hard on the ticker.
Was that incredible or what?
Let the Olympic spirit live in everyone.

Yeah, the hockey team could stand some domination.

I have no idea what you're talking about
Canada lost 2-0. I don’t know about you, but Thornton and Marleau could use a winger. Putting them out there 4-on-5 is just weird.

Hahahaha... you're totally right.
I don’t understand Babcock’s thinking.

What really confuses me is why they let it go to overtime. The scoreboard clearly stated a very different game than I saw.

It's these inconsistent international referees
Who knows what they’re thinking, half the time.

I see Kaspars Daugavins!
But I don’t have play-by-play on my stream, so I still don’t know how to say his name.
Is it on TV, do you know?
I’m watching skeleton for now, but I’ll put it on afterwards.

HOLLINGSWORTH! NOOOOOOOOOO!
Smashed a couple walls, fell into fourth. No medals in skeleton.

Montgomery is still in stong position
But yeah that is pretty disappointing. Seems like Canadians could and should be medaling, but are just cracking.
Montgomery just had another great run
He is in great position for silver, and maybe even Gold if he gets lucky.

WHOOOOOOOOOOO MONTGOMERY WINS GOLD
That was solid.

AMAZING
That’s probably the most tense thing I’ve watched so far this Olympics. Watching Dukars’ lead slowly dissipate during the run, yet still be ahead until the final turn was incredible to watch. Epic.

Hahahaha, really?
Was that game on TV?
