Silver Nuggets: Ottawa Senators Olympic update, trade rumours

It's an Olympic edition of the Silver Nuggets, beginning with an update on the Ottawa Senators players representing their countries in Vancouver:

  • Jarkko Ruutu, FIN: 1GP, 1G, 0A, 1P, 0PIM, +1, 2SOG, 11:16TOI

  • Daniel Alfredsson, SWE: 1GP, 0G, 0A, 0P, 0PIM, +1, 2SOG, 16:17TOI

  • Anton Volchenkov, RUS: 1GP, 0G, 0A, 0P, 0PIM, +1, 0SOG, 13:01TOI

  • Milan Michalek, CZE: 1GP, 0G, 0A, 0P, 0PIM, even, 1SOG, 11:00TOI
  • Filip Kuba, CZE: 1GP, 0G, 0A, 0P, 0PIM, -1, 0SOG, 15:57TOI

  • Kaspars Daugavins, LAT: 1GP, 0G, 0A, 0P, 0PIM, -1, 0SOG, 11:44TOI

  • Was anyone else impressed by the Latvian's gusto against the Russians on Tuesday? I was, and Daugavins was a big part of that--he's excited at the prospect of a big party in Riga if his team wins a game. (Press & Sun Bulletin)
  • I heard something on the radio today: That 'a little bird' told one of the TEAM 1200 radio guys that the Senators were going to pick up Dennis Seidenberg after the freeze is up. Obviously not for sure, but it was interesting that he said it with such certainty--and there's little doubt that Seidenberg is on the block. (TEAM 1200)
  • The Senators' trade-deadline dealing record hasn't been great (more on that this Monday), but Don Brennan think the pickup of Matt Cullen might change that. (Sun)
  • Kuba on the Olympics: "It's big." Deep, Filip. Deep. (Sens)

Star-divide

  • Back to Seidenberg, Duff thinks he's one d-man the Sens would be smart to target--along with Andy Sutton, Milan Jurcina, and Mathieu Schneider. (AOSB)
  • Chirpy thinks Jordan Leopold or Kurtis Foster might be in GM Bryan Murray's sights for acquisition, as well. (Sens Chirp)
  • Donny from brother-blog Litter Box Cats thinks Leopold is on the block, and community members are just about split on whether to sign him or trade him; one said he'd be worth a second-rounder. (LBC)
  • Funny coincidence that Matt Cullen is from the same hometown as Brian Lee; apparently Lee followed Cullen, who is 11 years his senior, closely when he was younger. (Citizen)
  • If you're curious to find out what the non-Olympic Senators will be doing over the break, the Citizen runs down a few of their plans. (Citizen)
  • The whole B-Sens team is getting pretty excited for their outdoor game against Syracuse this Saturday. (Press & Sun Bulletin)
  • Despite being assigned to the Binghamton Senators before the Olympic break, Jonathan Cheechoo's still getting the time off--he'd made plans, it's only fair. (Sharp)
  • Derek Smith made his NHL debut just before the break, and was pretty excited about it. (Press & Sun Bulletin)
  • Martin St. Pierre, currently suiting up for the Binghamton Senators, made the Guelph Storm's all-time team. (Guelph Mercury)
  • Bit of an injury scare for Robin Lehner when strained some neck muscles last week, but it's apparently not too serious. (Sault Star)

If we’re talking about Schneider we might as well dig up Chelios. Actually the more I think about it I think Chelios would be a great move. Obviously brings tonnes of experience, would probably play for peanuts and would give us that 7th d-man while giving up next to nothing. For the Wolves he’s put up 20 points in 42 games which isn’t too bad.

The latter

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

I don’t think Murray is looking for anything aside from depth. Sure if he can upgrade say Campoli’s spot in the rotation he’d do it, but he isn’t willing to give up much of anything at this point. Chelios would be a pretty cheap option as a depth player that’s for sure.

It's so appropriate

Especially since his team won 3-1. He was on for one goal, and it was the opposition’s. I wonder if he got blown past in the process.

I sort of thought he’d wake up in the Olympics, with so much more on the line than a regular game. Maybe he’s just not as good as he was last year.

I just don't understand how that's possible

I mean, I guess we saw a sudden, steep drop in Wade Redden’s play, but we KNOW Kuba is not as bad as he is playing. He’s shown flashes of being decent this year; I don’t understand how he is unable to play at that level consistently.

So Cheechoo gets a vacation while his Bingo teammates get to ride the bus and get their heads caved in every night by better teams

Hey Cheech, we had plans too. Ours was called ‘you playing well enough to stay in the NHL all year’.

ZING!

Great burn.

Still, I think Murray’s a pretty reasonable guy, and that was good of him to do. I think the AHL assignment was as much to get his salary off the books for the next few weeks as it was to actually get him playing down there. I think he’ll be back in Ottawa shortly, certainly as a ‘black ace’ for the playoffs.

Ya it was about salary, I dont think Murray has any illusions about him picking up his game

He might be back but I certainly hope not. Once Foligno comes back we’ll have Donovan and Winchester/Shannon in the press box so hopefully we’ve seen the last of him.

If anybody comes back up out of necessity in the playoffs, I think Zach Smith would be the best choice to fill some 4th line minutes

I agree with all of this

Except I don't know who Zach Smith is

I think the player you were looking for is Z Smith.

Ah, 'Zed' Smith

Short for Zedrick?

Daugavins

played alright. I’m liking this kid.

Yeah, I'm excited to see him develop a bit more

I think he could be Regin-esque in strength and intensity. Those two might work together on a cheap energetic second line.
