2010 Olympics open thread: Day 5
Figure we might as well do one of these: An open-thread for the whole day's events, including alpine skiing, biathlon, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, luge, nordic combined, speed skating, and, most importantly, hockey.
Feel free to discuss all of today's events, but make sure you're around for today's game between Canada and Norway (7:30 p.m. EST), and to watch Anton Volchenkov and the Russians take on Latvia (midnight EST).

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but...
Canada/Norway is at 7:30, Russia/Latvia is at midnight EST.
Mea culpa
The time-conversion screwed me up. I did three hours the wrong way. But it’s fixed now.

WHOOOO Canada (barely) beats Norway in curling
It had to go to extra ends, but Canada won their first game 7-6.

CTV is blocked for me!
I can’t tell if it’s because I’m in the U.S. or just my stupid Flash issues. It also didn’t work at my job, but they block most streaming video there too. I read Norway hit a made a great hit to send it to extra ends.
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
It wasn't particularly a great hit.
All they had to do was knock the one Canadian rock out. So fairly standard, really
Are you using IE?
I know you have to use IE, and you have to download SilverLight (is that a plugin, or something?). I got it set up at work, it was pretty sweet.
As for curling, I only watched a replay of the eleventh end, it was easy because Canada had the winner.

That's brilliant

Man, the Swiss have some fight
Watching the men’s hockey game right now, and the Swiss aren’t making it easy for the USA. Sure, it’s 3-0 for USA right now (Miller’s in nets), but Switzerland looks a fair bit better than I’d expected—especially given their lack of NHL talent (Hiller and Streit being, I believe, the only notable Swiss NHLers).
by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 16, 2010 4:25 PM EST reply actions
I was suprised by that result and game.
The U.S. looks really small and outside of the Backes-Kessler-Ryan line they didn’t do too much. If it wasn’t for that line me might be talking about an upset. Good game for Switzerland, not so much for the U.S. If they give Canada those kinds of 2-on-1’s and 3on-2’s it could get ugly Sunday Night.
Let the Olympic spirit live in everyone.

They’ve been awfully conservative at the wrong times and awfully aggressive when they didn’t know the ice well enough to justify it.
But this is a properly attacking call.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 16, 2010 11:54 PM EST up reply actions
This sheet is weird. I mean, I have less confidence in the Martin rink than anyone on the planet but even I grant that they can read ice. But rocks keep overcurling or undercurling on running on them and they seem to have no idea what’s going on.
by Benjamin Massey on Feb 16, 2010 11:57 PM EST up reply actions
So weird. Even on bad sheets, you can usually see the rough spots, but it seems like neither of these rinks can really guess what’s going on.
So many ice problems… too much ice on the hills, poor ice on the sheets, flood machine problems on the tracks…

Kevin Martin was born to peel. I bet they take the foot off the gas unless the Jerries give them an opportunity, and if that happens they’ll be shaking hands.
by Benjamin Massey on Feb 17, 2010 12:04 AM EST up reply actions
Close at the start, but it seems like Canada’s just outplaying them now. And Germany’s taking risks, and they don’t seem to have the people to pull them off (plus the ice isn’t helping).
Where does Germany rank on the pecking order? Any idea?
by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 17, 2010 12:07 AM EST up reply actions
Well, they’re not bad. I can tell that by watching them. They’re not botching anything (or not more than the Canadians are), they just haven’t got the talent to attempt the risky stuff and we do.
But I don’t know how this rink fares internationally beyond what I’ve seen tonight.
