Senators stifled by Red Wings in 4-1 loss

Ottawa's latest winning streak lasted much shorter than their previous one thanks to the Detroit Red Wings.  Despite playing solidly in the opening minutes, the Senators could not generate any kind of sustained attack and their play degraded as the game went on.  This was mostly due to the effort of the Red Wings, who simply jumped all over their opponents, allowing no time or space to develop a play.  Passing lanes were filled and the Senators were forced to repeatedly attempt to stickhandle their way past the blueline -- a strategy that is best reserved for video games.

This was also Matt Cullen's debut in a Senators jersey, and it was pretty unremarkable.  Cullen was invisible for the most part, but so were all of his teammates.  He got some negative attention early, taking a slashing penalty that led to Detroit's first goal, but other than that, he wasn't much of a factor.  One game is not a good body of work to judge him, so no hasty conclusions are needed.  Ottawa plays a very structured system; it will take him some time to acclimate to his new role and teammates.

Call-ups Brian Lee and Derek Smith did as well as could be expected.  Actually, that isn't fair to either one.  Neither defenseman made any glaring mistakes, but neither made any great plays either.  Though the Red Wings are not exactly the powerhouse of years past, they are still a highly skilled, disciplined team.  Playing mistake-free hockey against them is a tall order for veterans, and the two kids managed that much at the least.  Still, this was probably the game where Erik Karlsson was missed the most.  With no space for the forwards, the team needed an offensive threat from their blue line to either generate scoring chances or create space, and there was no one on the team capable of accomplishing that goal in this game.

What's that?  Filip Kuba, you say?

Star-divide

Sens Zero: Filip Kuba
When two AHL call-ups have a better night than you, you're not having a good game.  When you take two terrible penalties (Interference, Holding) that scream "My man just blew right by me!" you get a zero.  Kuba drew an assist on Ottawa's lone goal, but it was truly secondary.  I'm not a fan of finding whipping boys on this team, but Kuba's play has been consistently below average this season.  It was below average again tonight, and he was signed to provide better play -- much better play -- than he provided against Detroit.

Sens Killer: Pavel Datsyuk
Yikes.  How is it that a team that shuts down players like Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, and yes, Dany Heatley lets a talent like Datsyuk run free?  Make no mistake, this guy was all over the ice tonight and he was doing whatever he wanted to whoever he wanted.  Dangling the puck, winning battles, finding open space, you name it.  Ottawa had no answer for his skills tonight as he routinely shook off defenders.

Bonus Sens Killer: Special teams
Detroit was two for four.  Ottawa was zero for two.  Detroit routinely set up early and moved the puck all over the place.  Ottawa struggled just to gain the zone, much less maintain puck possession in it.  If you need it broken down in more detail than that, you'll need to find another website or maybe take out a "Hockey For Dummies" book from your local library.

Sens Hero: Peter Regin
Not so much for scoring the goal (it was nice to see Regin doing some dirty work in front of the net) but more for the difference in his play versus the past few games.  Working with Alex Kovalev suits Regin, for whatever reason.  He was one of the few Senators who had intensity every shift tonight.  He fought for what little space he could get, and made the most of it when he got it.

Bad News: Ottawa is now 0-1 since the Picard trade.  Could this cookie-cutter defensman have been the key to all of Ottawa's success and everyone in the world didn't realize it?  Stay tuned to find out.

Good News:  Ice time shows that coach Cory Clouston continued to roll four lines -- it was just not with great (or any) success tonight.  If this is truly a four line team -- and I believe it is -- and the coaching staff continues to plan like it is, there are going to be fresh legs going into the playoffs.  The benefits of that cannot be understated.

Bad News: Ottawa's possession of first place in the Northeast Division was fleeting; the Sabres' 3-1 victory over San Jose moves them back into the lead.  Buffalo still has two games in hand on Ottawa.

Game Highlights (there weren't many):
Forthcoming

Luckily for the Sens, there's a game tomorrow to get the bad taste of this loss out of their mouths quickly.  The team travels to New York to take on the Islanders.  After that, it's a two week waiting period for the Olympics, or as I like to think of them, the Abductor Sweepstakes.  Join us tomorrow for the final game of February!

I hate Detroit

I’ve been saying this a lot lately. I hate Detroit. I hate Bertuzzi. LA. Probably some others.

Seriously, screw Los Angeles. I want you to keep Detroit out, but come on. Bastards.

Heil gets silver

And I feel that someone punched me in the gut. I was sure she was going to win. Oh wait….now I’m sounding like the CTV.

Let the Olympic spirit live in everyone.

The American who won had a much better run

I could have done without them jumping up and down around Heil afterwards though.

I hate Kuba

Been saying it ALL SEASON, and it just seems now people are starting to see what a vortex of suck he is. Thanks for playing for your new contract and an NTC you piece of excrement. He is the WORST defenceman on our roster and he needs a 19 year old rookie to carry him.

TRADE HIM MURRAY.

If only it was possible...

He is untrade-able, even if it weren’t for the NTC he has.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 14, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

You really think he's untradeable, even after this year?

I mean, Murray bit on him in the Meszaros trade. His contract now isn’t bigger than what it was then. I think it’s possible he could be moved; my concern would be the salary we have to take back. I think our best chance of moving him is at next year’s deadline in exchange for a rental player.

That's too bad.

I’m in Montreal this weekend and missed the game. It’s unfortunate it was this way. I was hoping Cullen would have a better debut. Still there is the game at NY.

And something needs to be done about Kuba. I hate dissing a player but he isn’t working with us. Maybe he could do better on some other team else but not on ours clearly. Murray needs to take action.

Anyways good luck Sens at Isles!

There's no hope of action on Kuba until the startt of next year

He has a NTC clause that expires after this season. He’s not going to waive it.

re: Cullen

though he was invisible for the most part against Detroit and Ottawa has had little luck with deadline acquisitions, I think this one may be different. Like stated above, Ottawa is a very structure based team, and I think Murray chose to make this deal before the roster freeze to give Cullen the chance to practice with a new line for two weeks before the stretch. Having the Olympic break will be like a new training camp for him and his tentative (and always changing) line-mates.

I am AWESOME! Are you?

That's how I felt as well

And again, Detroit played very, very well. I bet Cullen will have more of an impact today.

Few thoughts on last nights game

I cant believe Chris Kelly only played 15 minutes because I saw way too much of that guy. That line with Alfie and Fisher was effective for about a period and barely had any sustained pressure in the 2nd half of the game. Conversely I was suprised by how many minutes Spezza played because at the game I felt like he was barely out there. Not a great effort from him.

But Kelly just looked awkward out there, couldnt handle the puck or make a pass to save his life. A bad game even for his standards so I can only hope he bounces back quick, especially if he’s going to stick with those linemate.

I’d say Kovalev-Cullen-Regin was the best line on the night. Kovalev handled the puck well and Regin did some good work in the corners battling for pucks.

Matt Cullen, aside from looking sexy as all fuck wearing my favourite number 7, was a passenger for sure. You could tell he was just watching his linemates and trying not to get in the way or make a mistake. Totally impossible to take anything about his game away from this one, I seriously cant even say if he handled the puck once all game.

Also, chili-dogs are the mutha-shittin truth.

Kuba was a true zero, if for no other reason than his heinous brain-fart on the 3rd goal. Watching him leave the down-low man (Bertuzzi I think it was) for the puck carrier was like watching a car wreck in slow motion: you know what the result is going to be but you’re helpless to stop it.

All in all though it was a fun game, ton of Sens fans in attendance, great atmosphere. They sold beer until 5 minutes left in the 3rd period and their ushers wernt upitty old farts taking time out from their retirement to piss on my fun, both of which were stellar revelations.

Hoping for a better effort this aft!

Tons of Sens fans?

That surprises me, a bit, but is awesome. Thanks for the recap!

goaltending

The only way the Sens can hope to go far in the playoffs is to have a good solid goaltender. This is what killed them in the late 1990s and early 2000s when they had great teams. Damien Rhodes, Ron Tugnett, Patrick Lalime, Tom Barrasso and Martin Gerber simply couldn’t do it when it really mattered in the palyoffs. Players like Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur are rare and hard to find. Considering the last few games Elliot has played, it is questionable if he can be ‘the one’

What should be done about it now?

Or, for that matter, what can be done?

The Senators don’t really have much they can do to improve the position. There are few goaltenders available, and even fewer are any good—certainly not better options that Elliott or Leclaire. I don’t think either of those two are long-term solutions, but I do think they’re good for this season. The Senators won’t go anywhere if they want their goalies to carry them; they’ve got to play a rounded, team game because that’s what’s gotten them where they are now.
