Silver Nuggets: Cheechoo on waivers, Lee and D. Smith recalled, Campoli out

  • It finally happened: Jonathan Cheechoo has been put on waivers. This is likely necessary to make the cap hit work for Saturday's game, and it's kind of surprising it hasn't happened sooner. I highly doubt anyone will pick up Cheech, but you never know.
  • Chris Campoli is out with a serious lower body injury he suffered last night against the Washington Capitals. Expect him out for a month.
  • To fill in for the heavily depleted defense corps (who are now missing Campoli, Erik Karlsson, and freshly traded Alex Picard), the Ottawa Senators have recalled Brian Lee and Derek Smith to play next game. Smith will line up with Matt Carkner, while Lee will pair up with Filip Kuba.
  • From PeterR: It's nice to be in first, even if it's just in the Northeast Division. (CBC)
  • From PeterR: Some quick reaction after the Ottawa Senators picked up the one-year option on GM Bryan Murray: Sun,
  • From PeterR: Murray said that he's unlikely to be wheeling and dealing, which isn't surprising considering a) how the team is playing, and b) the salary cap situation. (Citizen)
  • From PeterR: ... and then, despite what he says, he goes and acquires Matt Cullen in a completely unpredicted move on the day he's extended. We've got some coverage, but you can also check out Canes Country,
  • From PeterR: You might have noticed some changes, in the form of Facebook Connect availability on SBN blogs. Check out Blog Huddle for a little tutorial.

Star-divide

  • From PeterR: Anton Volchenkov gets no love in Puck Daddy's three stars last night? Not even in the honourable mentions? Eleven blocked shots, including six Alex Ovechkin shots, and the reason Ovie was off the scoresheet. For shame, Wyshynski. For shame. (Puck Daddy)
  • From PeterR: You know what's easy to do? Criticize trades in retrospect, as Don Brennan did this morning. Sure, Peter Bondra didn't do much after we traded Brooks Laich to the Washington Capitals for him in 2004, but how was anyone supposed to know that Bondra would be a bust, or that Laich would turn into a pretty good player? It was a deal for the then, and no matter how good Laich is now, he wouldn't have helped Ottawa in 2004. (Sun)
  • From PeterR: Also with the above-noted Brennan column: Watch out if things go sour, Cory Clouston. Ottawa media members get pretty sour when players or coaches don't treat them with the respect they think they deserve (see: Joe Corvo, Ray Emery, Dany Heatley), and Brennan already seems a little sore, and getting pumped for future tirades against you: "Clouston appears to have little use for the media".
  • From PeterR: The Binghamton Senators are getting set for their outdoor game in Syracuse against the Crunch. The game takes place Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. (B.U. Pipe Dream)

Brian Lee and Filip Kuba...

Great. Just fabulous.

I think I could line up against that line and not get muscled off the puck.

I agree...

This weekend’s games will be interesting with all these changes going on.

Don't be surprised...

If Campoli is moved before the deadline today. I smell a big trade for a top 4 defenceman in the very near future. Whom? I have no clue, but it seems like Murray’s making room for someone…

I don't think so...

Not enough cap space. Picard made 800K, Cullen makes 2.875M. That’s why Cheech was waived, presumably.

Cheech starts playing well, gets waived

What an intriguing development. He had two of his best games of the season, worked his way up to the top line, and gets sent to Binghamton.

I wonder if he’ll light it up in the AHL?

I hope so

I’d love to see him succeed at some level

i certainly hope so...

I love cheechoo. Lost of heart. But that won’t win all the games.

Not stoked

Too many moves. The team is playing so well right now, why are we changing things? Let’s be honest, the team may be playing lights-out hockey right now, but are we really aiming for a long playoff run? My expectation at the start of the season was to just get into the post-season, not win the cup! (although that would be a nice development…..)

by jon blaney on Feb 12, 2010 2:06 PM EST reply actions

Picard is not in the team's long term plans.

This is a win-now move that doesn’t impact the future in the slightest.

by Matthew on Feb 12, 2010 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think Ottawa has to be in a win now mindset. Alfie isn’t getting any younger. Sure they started this season with the mindset of simply making it back to the playoffs, but this recent run of games shows the Sens can hang with the big dogs in the East. The Sens made the finals by playing a team game and rolling 4 lines, much like they’re doing now. Why not shoot the moon?

by modsuperstar on Feb 12, 2010 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Plus the fact they managed to beat Washington and Vancouver, both teams who were red hot at the same time as the Sens just shows you they can beat good teams.

A-Train contract offer?

TSN is saying the Sens have already made an offer the A-Train http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=309922

Hope they make some headway and get things done soon.

Brennan is an idiot

This is the biggest mid-season trade for Ottawa since the Bondra deal back in 2004. And thanks to owner Eugene Melnyk the Senators are now a team that will spend money at the deadline to become a better team, yet Brennan decides to cast a large cloud.

I don’t seem to understand this guy, is he a Sens’ fan? Or a Leafs fan reporting on the Senators? He complains about Clouston’s ‘lack of respect for the media’ but isn’t he here to coach and not play media monger? If that’s what Brennan wants then Gretzky would be the coach here. Of course the Senators wouldn’t win many games but hey, they’d have a media friendly coach right? It makes no sense.

Enjoy the fact that you have a job that pays you to report on the game you love and a team that year after year is a legitimate threat to win the Stanley Cup.

Brennan IS an idiot

“Clouston doesn’t have use for the media?” Maybe if they didn’t ask him douchnozzle questions like “What does this win streak mean to you?” and “Evaluate Elliott’s play tonight?” they’d get better answers.

The Ottawa reporters ask loaded questions to get good quotes. The one thing I never blamed Heatley for was not talking to them. I don’t know how Spezza puts up with their shit.

I, for one, love Clouston’s frosty demeanor. He’s not as funny as Tortorella, but I bet they’d both be awesome to hang out and have some beers with.

Honestly, we deserve better

I’m going to be careful not to paint everyone with the same brush here, but a lot of media members in Ottawa have a pretty cushy relationship with the team, and they take advantage of that. I don’t understand why Brennan and Garrioch don’t push themselves to improve their coverage, because it’s all pretty uninspired for the most part.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 12, 2010 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Well, he's not supposed to be a "fan" of the Sens

I will cut him some slack in that regard, but he doesn’t have to be so personally offended and downright hostile towards players that may not be interested in dealing with his shit. He feels entitled to ask him whatever stupid question he wants, and when they react differently than he would like, he grills them for it. It’s bush league.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 12, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

It's not limited to him, though

Last night on the Team 1200, McDermott asked Clouston if the plan was to shoot more at Varlamov because he hadn’t played in a while. You could just hear him roll his eyes and tell him the plan is to shoot at everyone. Later on, Spezza got asked the same question and gave the same answer, just not as exasperated.

Sports reporters in general offer up softball questions (“How do you feel about winning?”) but I would love to hear him asked things like “What did you see that made you feel Kelly, Fisher and Alfredsson would match up well against Jarome Iginla’s line?” instead of the sound bite fishing they do.

Agreed

Sports journalism is, for the most part, a joke. You know how players always spout cliches? That’s because journalists always ask them the same questions. Easy questions, or ones that aren’t even questions, like, “Tough game tonight” or something. It’s a joke.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 12, 2010 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with the fan thing

But it is his job to report the inner happenings with this team to the best of his unbiased knowledge. Unfortunately, this has never happened right from day one.

It’s always his biased opinion just as he teared into Smolinski after the 2003 season ended basically bashing a player that had just played a major role in driving the Senators to the Conference Finals. The fans liked him, but he didn’t, so he portrayed it as that the fans didn’t like him which was bullshit. He did it to others as well like Hossa which is still remember this line “10 years from now Muckler is going to revered as a genius for getting one of brightest stars for Hossa” Yah, real genius there buddy.

Yet he would always go to bat for guys like Corvo who didn’t want to be here. Why? His comments at times make me question whether he dons a Leafs jersey underneath his suit.

Yeah, he's a dolt.

hawks61, you really seem to know your shit.

You sure you don’t wanna start cheering for a real team anytime soon?? ;)

After putting up all those dormant years in Chicago

My loyalty will never waiver – especially now. The ‘Hawks are probably the leading contender to get out of the Western Conference even with their goaltending problems (it really isn’t a problem just play Niemi more).

Who knows maybe the Senators and Blackhawks could meet in the Finals this year it would be awesome for sure. It would my dream match-up.

sens/cheech

sens have a good team chemistry happening why change now and cheecho is just getting going, well he will be picked up by a team like calgary to play with iggy that would be awesome.

by czarist on Feb 13, 2010 7:32 PM EST reply actions

Well, he didn't get picked up

But you’re right, Ottawa did have some good chemistry. The timing was odd, but it seems like it was just a move to get Cullen into the mix. There’s little question that Cullen has more to offer than Cheechoo.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 13, 2010 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

cheechoo

I THINK THE SENS ONLY NEED IS A GOOD STAY AT HOME DEFENCEMAN I THINK THE GM SHOULD MAKE A MOVE WITH ATLANTA WHO IS IN NEED OF A SCORING GUY CAUSE THEY ARE STRAPED WITH D MEN AND FOR ATLANTA TO MAKE A PUSH FOR A PLAYOFF SPOT THEY MIGHT GIVE UP A KUBIN OR A HAINSEY FOR CHEECHOO AND A 5TH ROUND PICK JUST FOOD FOR THE SEN NATION THOUGH IT MIGHT COME BACK TO BITE YOU IN THE BOTTOM IF WE FACE ATLANTA IN THE PLAYOFFS BUT I THINK ATLANTA WILL BE A SECOND ROUND DROP OUT.
