Completement fou...
I just looked at the numbers and this trade would be cap-compliant and totally insane.
New Jersey Devils trade: Ilya Kovalchuk - LW
With Ottawa Senators for : Alex Kovalev - RW & Brian Lee - D.
Okay. I know this is never going to happen. Fact
I just find that in some way this makes weird sense. We get one of the few forwards that could replace the Heater the Hated.
The devils can use the 5$M to resign Zach Parise and others. Brian Lee is a add-on to make this cap-compliant. They can send him in the minors and nobody would claim him.
Now, this will never happen because within 12 months the Devils go from overpaying for the Kovalchuk in a trade, overpay to sign him and then trade him as a salary dump. I do believe that this never happens. But like they say for 6/49... ...Imagine the possibilities.

I don't even think this would work
Could we even fit Kovalchuk under the cap?

Technically...yes
Kovalev 5 million, Lee 0.875, capgeek says we have 0.9 million in cap room, we used to have more I thought, but I guess carrying extra players. In any case, Kovalchuk is 6.67 so we have just about enough. So numerically, it will just about work.

Imagine having him until 2025?
That seems so unreal, a player locked up for that long…

Yeah that's insane
I would only want two players that long, Ovechkin and Crosby, that’s it. Even then it is a risk, a couple of surgeries away from becoming a Jonathon Cheechoo…

d'après Capgeek.com
Cap space that will be available at season’s end if the current roster does not change. Please note this total assumes no performance bonuses will be earned. The team could add a player to its roster with a full-season cap hit that is less than or equal to this total. Cushion deductions, if listed above as greater than zero, could reduce this total.
Before: OTT=Projected Cap Space $912,186
NJD=Projected Cap Space $0
After: OTT=Projected Cap Space $380,152
NJD=Projected Cap Space $532,034
The question is 'if' it could get done but 'why'
Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.
I want to know the names of the 3 people who voted yes
Name and shame!
