Brian Lee put on waivers
Brian Lee, a 9th overall pick by former GM John Muckler, has been placed on waivers. Lee played only a handful of minutes in 7 games this season before being placed in the press box.
If Lee and his two-year, one-way contract are picked up by another team, it could finally put an end to what has been a tumultuous relationship between Lee and the Ottawa Senators organization.

hope he gets claimed
For his own sake, I hope some team decides to take a flyer on Lee. His contract is not so bad for a team that has cap room. He can’t seem to get his game together here in Ottawa, but maybe he would have better luck somewhere else. There must be some team out there looking for a 5-6 defenseman who might still have a bit of potential in him.
Woohoo!
Now Binghamton might have 7 defensemen!

I don't understand why we signed him to this contract if we were just going to waive him
I’d really like to know what Murray was thinking.

Maybe he was just too optimistic?
We were all wondering what the hell he was thinking, but I guess Murray just hoped he would work out—and wanted to give him the benefit of the first 20 games to show what he can do.
Apparently, he can’t do shit.

Hard to do anything when you are always in the press box.

There's a reason he was there in the first place
If the staff had any trust in his abilities, David Hale wouldn’t have been called up to fill the vacant spot while Kuba was injured.

Right
So then why sign him to begin with? They haven’t had any faith in him since Carkner beat him out.

I don't think Murray has a plan
To me he always makes moves without putting together a plan. He signs Lee and Campoli, then signs Hale to a one way knowing that Ottawa could use Cowen for eight games.

I don't know if I'd go quite that far
I think his real plan has always been to try and get Alfie another shot at the Cup while rebuilding the team from the goal outward.
But I think I’d agree with you when it comes to our bottom pairing. It looks like Murray’s plan was “Sign them all and sort it out later.” Not very economic or well-thought out.

I think he does planning 'on the fly'
Hale was actually signed to a two-way, which is not at all a bad move. He did have a lot of one-ways, including Gonchar, Phillips, Kuba, Campoli, Lee, Carkner, and then there was Karlsson as a sure-fire NHLer. That makes seven, which wouldn’t have been too much to give Cowen his shot—and if Cowen had warranted an extended stay in Ottawa, I’d wager Lee would have been waived much sooner.
Hale’s capability on defence wasn’t foreseen. It’s a bit of serendipity that he turned out to be a capable NHLer.

He's a two-way?
Then why did Hale need to pass by waivers to be called up?

because waivers has nothing to do with one-way or two-way
one-way or two-way refers to whether you get the same amount of money regardless of AHL or NHL.
Waivers has to do with your age and the number of games you’ve played in the NHL.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Yeah, like Darren said
I can hardly ever tell what the story is for waiver-exempt players, although I know players on entry-level deals are always waiver-exempt. Had Hale only played nine games in the NHL this season, he could have been sent back; because he played the tenth, he’s now got to clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL.
I think it’s just a way the NHLPA can ensure that NHL-capable players get an opportunity to stay in the NHL, instead of being bumped up and down from the AHL at the whim of their NHL teams.

For whatever reason Murray’s shown an inclination to re-sign his own free-agents rather than try and pursue FAs from other teams; a frustrating strategy to say the least given the widely varied results the team has put up in recent seasons.
And doing these deals in-season is just baffling: in the cases of Lee, Shannon and Carkner what was the risk of waiting the length of the season to see how they played out versus other pending free agents? Murray lucked out with Carkner but at the time he was still an unknown quantity at the NHL-level.
This latest development is not a positive sign for Bryan’s job security beyond this season.
Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.
it was Muckler's 1st rounder pick
and i think Murray wanted to honour Muckler (because he gave Murray THE job) by keeping Lee and signing him to a contract that respected Lee and gave him a chance. Lee had his many chances and we all know how he used them…
This is just another chapter in Ottawa’s depressing draft record book.
maaan, i just looked at what we could of got at the 2005 draft instead...
im sure a few of you peeps hate these what-if or could-of situations but these are the players that GM Muckler could of got instead, the notable ones that were taken after Brian Lee’s 9th pick:
Luc Bourdon (RIP)
Anze Kopitar
Marc Staal
Ryan O’Marra
Martin Hanzal
Tuukka Rask
Steve Downie*
man, what a cringe fest.
- LOL FUCK THAT
Would you really consider Ryan O'Marra that good of a snag?

I think there's a 24 hour window
If no one claims him in that time, it’s off to Bingo. Has he cleared for sure yet?

Really who cares
about Brian Lee one way or another. This team clearly has major issues in the short and long-term in regards to their consistency that aren’t going to be changed with how Murray deals with Brian Lee (although i agree that it was stupid to sign him to that one way in the first place).
It does matter
Ottawa’s depth as an organization is very thin. While that is mostly the fault of John Muckler, it’s starting to become worrisome that we are letting players go and getting nothing in return. Lee was a top-10 pick. Whether he deserved to be or not is a debate won by hindsight, but the fact that we couldn’t even get a 7th rounder (Brian Elliott was drafted in the 7th round… it’s not a throway pick) for him is disturbing.
The team is already up against the salary cap. Continued bad decisions (Hartsburg, Paddock, Emery, misguided no-trade-clauses) are going to start to handicap the team if they haven’t done so already.

I agree that how we use or picks and prospects is very relevant (arguably the most relevant, especially in the long term). However, for some time now its been largely evident that for whatever reason it just wasnt going to happen with Lee. So I feel like although this is an important conversation from an overarching level, from the level of Lee personally, its still irrelevant.
Meanwhile, the team is faced with a number of big problems this season and in future seasons. Is the treatment of Lee at this point in his development (whether we get a 7th rounder or not?) really going to have any lasting impact? I dont think so.
It probably won't, you're right
I mean, most 7th rounders don’t make it to the NHL. But to write him off completely represents a significant loss for the club considering how much we invested in him. As an immediate impact, it’s negligible, but in terms of the organization’s long-term success, I find it very relevant.

On to the next Muckler, eh?
Who’s after him, Elliott? Regin?
