Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

TSN's Bob McKenzie reported on Twitter this morning that the Ottawa Senators have put defenceman David Hale on waivers. If he clears waivers, as of right now it is unclear whether Hale will remain in Ottawa or be sent to Binghamton.

With Filip Kuba still injured, this would leave the Senators with six defencemen on the roster for opening night: Chris Phillips, Sergei Gonchar, Erik Karlsson, Chris Campoli, Matt Carkner, and Brian Lee.

It is also worth noting that the Senators' official site lists both Hale and Derek Smith on the team roster, although D. Smith was sent to the AHL on Saturday.

Why?

If this is true, then all I have to say is: Why? He seemed like a useful guy who could fill in until Kuba gets back. He can’t be making much, so why cut him?

I'm surprised at all of the surprise.

He’s nothing more than a decent reserve/fill-in. Can we expect a career-minor leaguer to step-up and play meaningful minutes every year?

It also saves some cap space. How important is 600,000? Well at the trade deadline, that 600,000 could net you a 2.4 million dollar player.

I'm not surprised that he got waived, I'm surprised that it happened two days before the season began

Why make it seem like he made the team if you’re just going to drop him so soon?

Oh.

Well that DOES make sense.

Carry on then. :p

Distinctly possible that he was aware of the process all along

He could very well have been told he’d be around for a while, but wasn’t actually on the team; just kicking around as a spare.

And he could very well still be around for awhile. Passing him through waivers today, when the news can be buried underneath the dozens of other waiver moves around the league, makes it less likely that he’d be plucked. Waiting until next week to pass him through waivers would cause a bigger splash in the news cycle.

I don’t see him getting sent down this month, but when he does get sent down, he will have already cleared. Good move.
