Improved effort not enough as Senators fall 3-2 in OT to Capitals

The Ottawa Senators avoided setting a franchise-worst pace to start the season, but they could only secure one point after a loss to the Washington Capitals on Monday night. The Sens looked like the better team for most of the night, but couldn't capitalize on the powerplay--a recurring theme for some time now--and ultimately it was the big gun for the Caps, Alex Ovechkin, who ended the game with mere seconds remaining in overtime.

In all, it was a step in the right direction. The forwards were improved, although the big guns dropped the ball, but the supporting cast--led once again by the third line of Jarkko Ruutu, Chris Kelly, and Chris Neil--picked up the slack. Had half of the scoring chances and scrambles Ottawa had in front of the Washington net been converted, it would have been two points for Ottawa instead of one--and although 'close' only counts in horseshoes, it's at least some comfort for fans of a team with one point in three games.

Sens hero: Ryan Shannon
I was questioning the insertion of Shannon into the lineup tonight, but he sure made Cory Clouston look like a genius with his effort tonight. He played only eleven minutes on the night, but was making things happen, and his goal was a thing of beauty as he spun John Carlson inside out and roofed a perfect shot far side over Michal Neuvirth's glove.

Star-divide

Sens zero: Alex Kovalev
Now, I'm not one of the Kovalev haters who rags on the guy no matter what he does, but to tell it like it is, Kovalev was pretty terrible tonight. I understand the shortcomings that Kovalev brought with him when we signed him, and have come to terms with those, but we need him to offer something of use on the powerplay, and to be at least reasonably smart with what he does with the puck.

Sens hero: Pascal Leclaire
Pascal Leclaire is a rockstar. Well, game-winning goal notwithstanding. Still, Leclaire made some great saves, especially one glove save on Ovechkin late in the third period, and--don't look now--but has strung together three pretty good games in a row.

Sens zero: The powerplay
We were supposed to have a sick powerplay this season: Sergei Gonchar with Erik Karlsson, Daniel Alfredsson, Mike Fisher, Jason Spezza, Peter Regin, and Milan Michalek were supposed to be assembled in some combination to absolutely kill it while a man up. But it hasn't materialized yet. Ottawa went 0-for-5 tonight and is now 0-for-14 on the season, which goes a long way in explaining why the Sens only have four goals in three games played. The outcome for the Sens won't likely improve until their powerplay efficiency does.

Sens hero: Peter Regin
Tonight was Regin's best game by a mile, and he looked to have found the speed and puck control that had been missing in the season so far. He took a couple untimely penalties, but still finished with an assist and was one of few plus-players on the night. His improved play will be helpful in improving the results Ottawa gets in the coming games.

Sens killer: Alexander Semin
Seems like Semin is always kiling the Sens, and he spoiled a great first period by scoring a late goal on Leclaire. My theory is that he sneaks under the radar with all the focus on Ovechkin; if he could play more consistently, the guy might be able to give Ovie a run for the team's scoring lead by feasting on opposing second- and third-line defenders.

The (in)jury is out: Daniel Alfredsson with a lower-body injury
This is a concern. Although not a concern that we should be surprised by: Given the age of many of our forwards, and the injury histories of many of the others, the Senators top-six forward group was always a fragile bunch. Alfredsson missed the last five minutes of regulation and the entire overtime with a lower-body injury. We're still waiting to hear what the specifics of it are, but it's not likely the last injury we'll see this season.

Watch out for: Sergei Gonchar
In a similar capacity as Alfredsson, Gonchar isn't getting any younger, and all the pressure being put on his shoulders as a result of the underperforming defence corps is probably adding a few years on the guy already. He played 29:42 tonight, 25:38 against the Maple Leafs, and 28:25 against the Sabres in the season opener.

Game highlights:

It is still young in the season, and two off-days until the next game might be just what the Senators need to settle down and get back to basics about their game. Once they clean the on-ice game up, the wins will come in good numbers.

Shannon was gold tonight

I also felt that Spezza was great, particularly in the first half of the game.

The lines should like

Regin-Spezza-Alfredsson – I hear people saying that Michalek and Spezza have checmistry, but I’ve never seen it. Spezza is a slow puck-control kind of centre, while Michalek likes to use his speed to catch defenders and goalies unaware. So far the two styles don’t mesh well. Regin uses his speed as well, but he has the hockey sense and skill to play a more patient offensive game, which makes him gel well with Spezza and Alfie.

Foligno-Fisher-Michalek – Michalek is a speedy bang and crash forward. This fits in perfectly with the gritty Fisher and energizing Foligno. I’d really like to see what these three could do together.

Ruutu-Kelly-Neil – Seriously, you think I’m going to break this line up?

Winchester-Smith-Kovalev/Shannon – Our 5 million dollar ‘star’ on the 4th line? You better believe it. Regin and Foligno have certainly earned top-6 spots ahead of him, and although Michalek has been barely noticeable, he plays with a lot more girt and determination.

Defense pairings:

Phillips-Gonchar
Sergei has been more steady than we imagine. His offense needs to get going, but that’s a team-wide issue right now. Phillips is adjusting to playing with more freewheeling partners. After years of playing with shutdown defenseman, Phillips as to be the go to defense anchor. He’s more than up to the task. It will just take a bit of time.

Hale-Campoli.

Yes you read right. I was against David Hale making the team. I said he was a jouneyman depth defenseman. And he is. But right now Brian Lee is no better. And at least Hale isn’t afraid to get physical. Sure I’d rather a more proven shutdown blueliner (Lilja is off the market? F***k. How’s Gryba doing down in Bingo?), but our options in that regard are rather limited.

Karlsson-Carkner

Karlsson is sophmoring slumping big. But it’s only 2 games into the season, and the defense as a whole is struggling. So no time to panic. He just needs a partner that can help cover his mistakes. Sure Carkner isn’t the ideal, but Phillips has struggled in that department as well, and the wrong Murray got to Andreas Lilja first.

Power play:

First unit should look like Regin-Spezza-Kovalev-Gonchar-Karlsson. Powerplay is really all Kovalev’s got right now. And even though he’s struggled a bit, we’re still paying 5 million dollars. This is our best chance to get some return from that investment. In fact, Alex should like it. He gets to skip the nitty gritty of 5-5 for the most part, but gets to play the easy powerplay.
We want Erik to learn from Gonchar….power play is the best time.

2nd unit should be the bang and crashers of Foligno, Fisher and Michalek, with Alfie and Campoli manning the points.

Note: This is not a knee-jerk reaction. I think these lines are the best option in the long term, not just to right the ship now.

Kovalev on the 4th? Hmm

He’d pwn the lesser competition. And yes, he’d have to be given the 1st powerplay unit in compensation. Perhaps giving the unit over to him, and allowing he and Gonchar to run it just like Gonch and Malkin did in Pittsburgh could do wonders.

Yes, like your powerplay ideas. Couldn’t make it worse, could they? Not sold on the D pairings, though, especially on calling up Hale. He took hundreds of games to score a goal in the NHL. Take that as you may.

lesser competition, nay! 4th lines usually line up against good lines.. you seldom see checking line vs checking line and 1st line vs 1st line.. he needs someone who can accept his passes.. ottawa is short on snipers. put him with michalek again. michalek/fish/kovy worked decent last year. michalek draws attention along the left boards, kovy on the right boards, and fish floating and crashing in the middle. michalek sneaking in the high slot and crashing too.

regin/alf/spezz — regins speed and puck handling along with his ability to play along the boards make him ideal to play with spezz and alfie. the big difference between michalek and regin is that when regin gains puck control along the boards he had a realllly quick first step and creates instant space — space that draws attention and allows alf or spezz to get a little space.. and we all know what they can do with space.

then folig/z.smith/shannon-winchester: foligs can bang and handle, so can z smith. they can cover mini shannon as he rips around like a flea (and apparently scores handily).

 and yes, ruutu/kelly/neil.

I like your suggested combinations. Sure Foligno has shown well so far this season, but I am not sure that means that he has to be on one of the top two lines. I prefer to see lines that mesh well and then see the playing time distributed according to which line is working well on a given night(rather than a hierarchical system where 1st line gets the most ice time, followed by 2nd and on down).

While that might work in theory...

If you think Kovalev is not giving it his all right now, it can only get worse if you put him on the 4th line. He is a man of pride, that won’t go over well.

Michalek deserves to play on the 4th line alot more than Kovalev

More than pretty much anyone actually

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

These appear to be the lines as of today, minus Hale

Are you Cory Clouston?

I wish!

Well, maybe not. Although it would be nice to have control overn NHL roster…the responsibility and pressure would be too much to handle.

nice write up

Foglino-Fisher-Michalek line is an intriguing one. Would love to see that.

Is that good news?

It's a start

Now if they could bury a few of their chances things would be really looking up.

Awesome!

I was stuck on the stupid 401. Took me stupid 5 hours to get from Kingston to stupid TO.

I’ve been having a difficult time catching games and making it into the GDT recently. I need to try harder.

No wonder why he let that Ovechkin goal go five hole on him.
