Cowen Sucks
I live in Spokane and have season tickets and I can tell you Cowen is a very overrated player we don't even want him here anymore, He was a Terrible pick.. If hes terrrible in junior then whats he gonna be like in Pro? If you go back to drafts past we could've had Kopitar instead of Lee and Paajarvi-Svensson instead of Cowen instead were stuck with 2 bust dmen instead of 2 game breaking forwards.

I think you’ll find a lot of people on this blog who are tempering their optimism, or just downright sceptical of Cowen’s chances in making the NHL.
Personally, the bad season he’s having does concern me, but I’m not going to write him off until we know he’s a write-off. Knee injuries are no laughing matter, and I’ll give Cowen the benefit of the doubt for the time being.
As for Lee/Kopitar… well… it sucks, but it’s over and done with.

We'll see what happens to him in a few years.
We’ll also see what happens to Paajarvi Svensson in a few years. I think both should be good players.

Bob Mackenzie had projected Cowen to go third overall before last year’s season started.
The kid have to have done something right.
And, as the new poster said, he's been bloody awful this year
That’s a sentiment I’ve heard from a half dozen Chiefs’ season ticket holders whose opinions I value greatly.

And, by extension, I respect your opinion
But I don’t think one bad year in the WHL means a player is a bust. To call him that based on almost no real data like MCNISH does is simply absurd.

What's weird
is that he still has the best +/- on the team. I’m curious as to his time on ice and who he’s playing against. I’ve heard from wraparoundcurl that he hasn’t been playing well this year, but the other Chiefs followers I’ve seen have been fine with his play (albeit noting that he’s not as good as he was prior to injury).

Worth the risk
I wouldn’t say that means he has no NHL future. Huge defencemen are in high demand these days, and at the time of the draft not many people thought it was a bad pick. Chara was a marginal defenceman at best before he came to Ottawa. I’m willing to wait this out, maybe he will take a few years to develop but if he is brought along properly he could turn out to be a fantastic shut-down d-man.
That's a good point
Chara was Hal Gill-esque before he came to Ottawa, and then—for whatever reason—his development really picked up. Even if it takes four years to turn him into a good NHL defenceman, it’s a good pick.

Thing with Chara
I’ve read stories about Chara being a freak of nature when it comes to his workout routines and his effort levels. I think a lot of the reason that Chara became such a dominant player is because of his commitment. It’s yet to be seen if Cowen shares that same work ethic.
One can only hope.

Yeah, you're absolutely right
Cowen would benefit by spending as much time in the gym as Chara does.
His dad was an Greco-Roman wrestler, eh? That’s how he learned everything he knows.

Here's a story about judging a young hockey player
Many people thought the same thing about some 19-year old down in Norfolk during his rookie campaign in the AHL. The next season he became an AHL All-Star during the lockout season, no less, and the year after that entered the NHL. Many said he was “too small” for even the “NEW” NHL and that he wouldn’t last because he gave up too many turnovers and that he was soft.
Well, after an All-Star appearance in 2008 and leading the league with a +63 over the past two seasons this young defenceman was named to the best team in the world – Canada. He has accomplished a lot for a defenceman that many deemed “not good enough” from his days at Michigan State to Norkolk (AHL) to Chicago (NHL).
By now I think you know who I’m refering to but just in case you’re not sure his name is …. Duncan Keith.

As far as Cowen goes...
I haven’t seen him play so I cannot judge him but just look at Erik and Jack Johnson and how they struggled the next season after being drafted and now both are top notch blueliners that will anchor Team USA’s blueline in just a few weeks (I can’t believe it’s here). So let’s not jump all over the kid until he’s at least proven himself.
