Senators beat Penguins 4-1, extend win streak to eight
The Ottawa Senators tied a franchise record by recording their eighth straight win after beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1.
Down, but not out
The Senators fell back early after Evgeni Malkin made it 1-0 within two minutes of the opening face-off. However, this team refused to let this get them out, and after surviving a strong Pens opening in the first six minutes or so, the Sens controlled the pace of the game from there on out.
Spezza's streak continues
Jason Spezza now has a five game goal streak going (if you include the two games prior to injury), tied for the longest of his career. He had another strong night, showing great patience with the puck and firing off a team high five shots on goal.
Not all streaks can last
Alex Kovalev's 7 game point streak came to an end tonight, but it doesn't mean he played poorly. Kovalev finished +1 and had a good night, backchecking hard and throwing some hits (albeit taking a couple of phantom calls against Kris Letang in the process).
Foligno's hard work pays off
Nick Foligno has been one of the best Senators on the ice the past few games, so it was nice to see him get an assist and an empty net goal in tonight's game.
Elliott = McGuire's monster performer
Pierre McGuire couldn't stop gushing about Brian Elliott's performance tonight. Elliott made 30 saves on 31 shots, and though he didn't face too many dangerous scoring chances he showed excellent rebound control on the ones that did hit him. He's clearly playing with confidence, and it's being reflected in the team in front of him.
Other things to note
Chris Kelly and Mike Fisher were the other two goal scorers on the evening, and the Senators continued their perfect penalty kill. Also worth noting is Erik Karlsson, who missed the net far too many times for his own good but looked absolutely stellar out there. This kid can skate so fast that once he's given free license to really go for end-to-end rushes he's going to be absolutely scary.
The Senators played harder than the Penguins tonight, deserved the win and got it. They were lucky that Marc-Andre Fleury made a few mistakes in net (apparently due to an injured finger, new glove, or both), but it would be very hard to deny that the Senators were the better team tonight. Let's just hope they can bring this momentum with them when they face the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
You can catch the highlights in our handy new NHL.com video widget on the right-hand sidebar, but they're here too:

What an awesome game
Or awesome sounding, based on what I heard of it. I’m ashamed I didn’t get to see it.
Sounded like Spezza was an animal, though, which is great to hear. When he plays with enough confidence to hold the puck, instead of constantly trying to dish it off, he can make things happen. Things like magic. He can make magic happen.

The whole first line were animals
A threat EVERY time they were on the ice. THe whole team played well, but for sure Ells, top line, Karlsson and the shutdown kids stood out. Its just really hard to find anything but awesome things to say about the boys right now.

Top line was fantastic
But I still think it should be Shannon-Regin-Kovalev and Cheech-Fisher-Foligno for second and third line. 2A and 2B, really. Maybe that’s just me, though…

The magic show!
Sounded like it was a solid game and it was good to see everyone bounce back from the early goal and not let it deflate them. Confidence is through the roof at the moment and that can go a long way. I’m most impressed with Foligno I think.

I thought Spezza was the best player on the ice all night long. I’ve seen him play a lot (not as much as you guys, but still a lot) and to me, he’s never looked quicker on his skates. I was very impressed by his performance.

Spezza has the talent to be a top end scorer in the league, he’s just long been happy racking up the assists. Boy can shoot and dangle with the best of them, so he’s probably surprising a lot of people with his shoot first mentality lately.

Well, I'm pleasantly surprised, and I hope he keeps it up.
The way he’s playing, he could enter superstar territory. Not Ovechkin/Crosby superstar, perhaps, but maybe Eric Staal/Iginla territory.

The loss of Heatley and the addition of Michalek have really changed his game
He was dominant last night. Alfie, of course, recognized that Spezza was up for the game and went from shoot mode to pass mode. That line looked REALLY good.

It seems like Spezza finally figured out that Heatley isn't there anymore waiting for the drop pass.
At the beginning of the year he was moving the puck down the ice and dropping it to the other team constantly. He’s always had great skills, but he didn’t use his head. As soon as he started taking it to the net and shooting, he started scoring. I just hope he keeps it up, he’ll be with us for a long time…

Elliott
Why are people downplaying B.E. Keeper’s performance tonight!?! He absolutely ROBBED Crosby on one occasion and those easy-looking saves are made to look easy because his positioning was excellent.
Dude has been lights out for 6 straight games, Mr. Glass better be prepared to fight for his job back!

Elliott was very good tonight. He was confident and it showed.
I think his defense in front of him played very well also, but I take nothing away from the man in the net.

Hahahaha... B.E. Keeper... beekeeper
Elliott’s apiculture hobby is renowned. But you’re right, it’s no fluke that he’s been in nets for some convincing wins, and he’s part of an entire team that has stepped up their game. His skaters make life easier for him, but he makes life easier for them, too, knowing that these days he’s going to make the saves when they need him.
Also, I appreciate that we’ve now nicknamed Leclaire ‘Mr. Glass’ just a season after we allowed the literal Mr. Glass (that is, Jeff Glass, former Sens goaltending prospect) walk away.

The guys were skating like they were during the Cup run
They were finding room everywhere and hitting it at full speed.

I was like, "Who is this new guy?"
Then I saw Jeff.

Yeah, I was going to welcome him
But then when I clicked on the name to make sure he just joined, I was like. “Oh, it’s just Jeff”

We've got a new highlights widget! Check it out in the right sidebar, right under 'recent posts'!
It’s actually pretty awesome!

The widget's nice but....
It doesn’t work at work!
For whatever reason, I can only see the highlights when they’re posted as they have been.
GO SENS GO!
What a juggernaut right now. Anybody hitting up the Van city game? I think I have to go support this team, plus that game will be epic as hell!

If both teams keep rolling it would be cool to have a head to head, best in Canada battle with both teams at their hottest. A something’s gotta give streak breaker game.

Definitely.
It’s gonna be an all out war between them.
Ruutu playing his old team, Burrows and the Sedins are tearing it up….and yeah as you mentioned they’re on a 6 game streak as well.
My only concern is the monumental game against Buffalo being the night before, and the Sens might be a little tired. Buuuut then again we have Alfie.

Same here.
Burrows got me a crapload of points in the pool that night…
For the record, I’ve got Carkner too.

Some other notes from the game:
Shannon-Regin-Cheechoo were practically invisible. Ruutu-Kelly-Neil were so good that it didn’t matter, but like Darren points out, I strongly prefer the Shannon-Regin-Kovalev and Foligno-Fisher-Cheechoo line combos.
Ottawa hit four goal posts in this game. It could have easily been 8-1.
Milan Michalek also hit Fleury in the face with a puck. Michalek is no Fisher, though, so Fleury was not concussed. Updated goalie face shots stats:
Mike Fisher: 4 (what the hell, guy)
Daniel Alfredsson: 2 (He apparently hit Elliott in the face in the morning practice)
Milan Michalek: 2
Alex Kovalev: 1

Winnie is apparently ready for action. I’d actually be all for a Regin-Shannon-Winnie reunion and benching Cheechoo.

I wonder how much money Melnyk is willing to swallow
Buying out Cheechoo is really what the team should do, because Winchester is so much cheaper. I think they’ll just ride out his contract instead. He and Kuba are the two players who I want to move the most.

I think he'll buy out Cheechoo
But he’s not going to bury his contract in the minors. I’m sure he knew there was a very real chance Cheech would flop, and that he might have to buy him out, but was probably convinced it was really the only option to get a decent player in return (Michalek).
Cheechoo might start getting scratched, though… he just can’t keep up. Winchester would fit a lot better with Regin-Shannon, even if their offence will be limited without a big gun on the line with them.

He probably should be scratched if he's not going to play with Foligno and Fisher
I thought he fit in really well on that line and would generate consistent scoring chances, but if he’s not with them, I don’t really see his place on the team.

Thanks for the widget-less highlights.
The highlights are so dope.
I like how they include everything, from nice chances to good hits.

No problem
And yeah, the NHL has done a good job with those things. They just need to start including fights.
