Kid Karlsson

I am amazed at his growth the past month. Confidence, skill and strength. Is there any doubt he will be our best defenseman in a month? Skill like that is scary. Clouston is using him perfectly. He was out there to end the game, is being used on the PP and clearly has been given the green light to skate it out and up. I can't say enough about the kid.

Could he end up being the best pick of the lot from the draft?

That might be a stretch

I believe Stamkos is legit and Drew Doughty has been downright amazing for the Kings. Tyler Myers is illiterate but also playing extremely well in Buffalo. It might be fairer to say that Karlsson was fantastic value for where he was picked in the draft.

What’s more impressive about 2008 is that there is a very good chance Ottawa’s first four picks (Karlsson, Wiercioch, Z.Smith and Andre Petersson) will all be on the team within the next few years. That’s a fantastic draft.

very true of Mr. Myers. I think if I were a GM and the chance to draft a defensman over 6’ 5" presented itself, and he was ‘projected’ to go top 10, I’d likely take him #1. Too rare and too valuable.

Yeah

Big, mobile defensemen are just absurdly valuable. One wonders why Muckler ever let Chara go.

By the way, welcome to the site!

Nice post

I don’t think he’ll be the best pick of the draft, as there was a lot of talent drafted in the first round: Stamkos, Doughty, Bogosian, Myers, Del Zotto, Eberle, Hodgson, etc. However, I think (like Mark said) that he looks pretty fantastic for someone drafted 15th.

Karlsson is promising

Karlsson is showing maturity far beyond his years. All of his experience leading Swedish teams on the Power Play seems to be paying off. The danger in drafting a small Dman is that he’ll get hurt, but he seems to take care of himself pretty well. The rash of injuries we had seem to have been a blessing in disguise, as we have discovered some depth that we didn’t know we had. As long as the great goaltending continues, the Sens will surprise all the experts.

Poise.

While Karlsson plays a little frantic at times he seems to be able to not let the game get to him. He is not often seen being manhandled by the larger guys in the league and seems to have a really positive attitude. He could be the next great Swede coming up for the Sens! Aflie needs someone to hand the reigns to!

I think the big thing is his confidence and intelligence

It allows him to play well despite his size. He is smart enough to play well defensively (+5 in his last 5 games) and confident enough to jump into the play, make gutsy creative plays, that most rookies shy away from. It was an amazing draft. Probably the best since 05, but the point is, it looks like it was worth it to trade up.

Murrays drafting (that was really his first year) is very strong. I agree the top 4 picks of ours in that draft show real promise

Agreed.

This guy is playing amazing and I think a lot of it has to do with the confidence to carry the puck and make plays. Watching him with the puck gives me chills.
