Staying sensible about Mike Brodeur
It's become readily apparent that the Ottawa Senators media and fanbase have already begun welcoming Mike Brodeur with open arms, and there's a reason for that: the team has been desperately seeking steady goaltending all season since it entered the league. Admittedly, we here at Silver Seven haven't been much help, as we were among the first to anoint him with a nickname ("Not Martin") and have not been hesitant to shower him with praise during his brief time with the Ottawa Senators.
However, there is a huge distinction between praising Not Martin for what he has accomplished and what we hope he accomplishes. It's one thing to say "this rookie has been fantastic for the Senators in goal so far" (he has), it's an entirely different thing to say that he is the goalie this team has been searching for (he isn't). Mike Brodeur simply has not proven himself in this league yet, and Senators fans need to realize this before he inevitably disappoints.
People should remember that many goalies come into this league and do extremely well for a few games, or perhaps even for a season. The obvious names of Andrew Raycroft or Jim Carey pop out, but there are countless examples. It's not just that goaltenders go on hot streaks or get lucky, it's also that a new goaltender has an advantage of being underscouted, and teams are unable to exploit their weaknesses. As an example, a likely reason that Pascal Leclaire had such a stellar 2007-08 campaign is that teams were unable to exploit his weakness of pucks shot from the blueline without any sort of screen.
Mike Brodeur may have a 3-0-0 record, 1.00 GAA, and .970 SV%, but this is after three games. The truth of the matter is that he has never played more than 38 games in a season at the AHL level because he's often been relegated to split time in the AHL and ECHL. His AHL record this year includes a 3.03 GAA and .892 SV%. The man's history indicates that what has happened right now is a guy playing above his head, and it's almost certainly unsustainable. Nevertheless, there are fans asCTV continues to run that poll asking if Brodeur should be named the Senators' number one goalie, and the masses have answered with a fairly resounding yes:

I'm not trying to take away from Not Martin's spectacular start in a Senators uniform, nor do I hope he starts to play poorly. If he goes to Faustian measures to maintain a .970 SV% and perfect win record, I'll be extremely happy for our soulless goaltender. All I'm saying is that if Mike Brodeur happens to break down in net and lose a game or two, let's not act surprised, okay? Because as the old saying goes, even Vesa Toskala gets a shutout once in a while.

It’s great to see some reasonable expectations, but it’s also disappointing to see cynicism. Like this opening line from a Citizen article:
“The magic will disappear at some point. It always does.”

Hilarious.

I was extremely pleased with myself after thinking of that.

I think the diagnosis was one week
And that would be one week from Saturday, so not too long. But it’s never easy to know with concussions, he could take a quick turn for the worse, or—if Not Martin keeps going well—he could stay out longer just for precautionary reasons.

I look forward to seeing Not Martin in goal today against the B's
As a die-hard B’s fan, I want to see what he can bring.
BTW, brutal Vesa comment. You guys really don’t like eachother too much do you? I love reading the PPP blog too, except they’re all down in the mouth these days….
bt
Actually, I get along just fine with Leafs fans because I’m from BC and don’t have that innate hatred. I don’t think Leafs fans actually get mad when anyone insults Vesa, though… he’s dead to them. If I insulted Gustavsson, that’d be a different story, but that joke wouldn’t work with Gustavsson as he’s a skilled goaltender (unlike Vesa at the moment).
And the Vesa comment probably wasn’t as harsh as the Pascal Leclaire one, or at least not in my opinion.

Brodeur nickname
Down w/ Not Martin up with Baby Bro™
Fail
He has virtually no relation to the other Brodeur and as they are both M. Brodeur it’s important to note which one of them isn’t Martin.

You missed an opportunity for another great caption there, Darren
“This puck would concuss Pascal Leclaire.”
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that there are people out there (not just at CTV) who want this guy crowned the number one goalie, but I am. I know I’m the one who came up with the Not Martin nickname and put together the king and cape photo, but for me at least it’s all been tongue in cheek. He’s extremely likely to come down to Earth sooner or later, but for the time being why not have a little fun? He’s been playing well, has won us a few games, and seems to be a really upbeat guy who is living a dream.
We spend so much time focusing on the negatives with goalies as a fanbase that I think it’s a good thing that we’re having some fun with Mike Brodeur. He seems like he’d be a good sport about it and goodness knows we need a feel good story.
But I have my expectations in check.

EXACTLY
I have no problem with us showering him with our joking praise, but that’s because we know it’s not going to last. Why not enjoy it while it’s here? Meanwhile, some fans are already talking on forums about signing him to a new contract, etc. It blows my mind, kind of.

It's kind of par for the course in Ottawa
Maybe it’s because we’re on the west coast. Our praising is delayed by 3 hours so we get time to become more sane.
But really it’s just nice to have a story and a player we can have some fun with. I don’t know if Mike Brodeur has had a chance to read any of this (unlikely), or if he knows of his nickname, or has read any of the praises. But I think he’s having the time of his life, making more money than he has in his entire professional career, and soaking in every minute of it. I think he’d be proud and honoured to be immortalized as a legend (even if just for awhile) to Senators fans. He had Don Cherry cheerleading for him after the Saturday game. He beat the Rangers at home and then the Canadiens at home. Those are two imposing cities and buildings.
He’s having his moment and we’re riding along and having fun.
Not to be lost in all this, but Brian Elliott had a pretty good game today as well. It’s been a dynamic shift as a team, not just one goalie. Maybe one goalie coach, but not just one goalie.

OtherBrodeur vs MartyBrodeur next Tuesday ?
Just as people have been expecting and waiting for Mike Brodeur to lose a game and the shine from his new star, there will come a time when Brian Elliot will slip and fall from the hot streak he’s been having these past few games.
The Sens have not done well against the Devils /the Real Brodeur this season so what does Coach Clouston have to lose in putting Mini-Me-Brodeur in the nets for the upcoming game against the Real Brodeur this Tuesday Next ?
He cannot do any worse than what our #1 and #2 have done so far this year.
And it gives Brian Elliot the opportunity to rest on top as a winner for awhile instead of being pulled out while losing and having his fragile confidence take another hit.
But if Mikey wins the game … WHO-O-O-O—AAA !!! LOOK OUT ! Sens fans would likely blow a gasket and start sending bus tickets to Bryan Murray providing Pascal “Puck-in-the-head” LeClaire with a ride out of town .
