Game 48: Ottawa Senators @ New York Rangers

Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers, Jan 14, 2010 7:00 PM EST

Finally! Mike "Not Martin" Brodeur has come back!  To New York City!  Everyone's favorite goalie was recalled today when Pascal Leclaire was injured breathing in practice and backup Brian Elliot came down with the flu.  Tonight ,the Senators try to break out of their five game losing streak against Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers.  It will not be an easy task as they have been outscored 22-5 over those past five.  Lundqvist is probably the last person they want to see, but the team is far past the excuses stage.  Back to back shamings by Carolina and Atlanta should be enough to get some fire for this game.  The team has started well in the first period during this losing streak -- they just haven't buried their chances.  If they can tonight, the pressure will ease.  Besides Not Martin and Lundqvist here are some other guys to watch tonight:

Star-divide

Mike Fisher:  Early in the season he showed he could be dominant when not facing other teams' best lines.  Now, he has to at least show he can produce against top players.

Alex Kovalev: Yep, another usual suspect here.  The team doesn't need another four-goal night from him, but if he plays at that level, it will open up space for his linemates.

Erik Karlsson:  His play has been strong of late.  If he has a soft game tonight, this one could get ugly quickly.

Marian Gaborik: The Senators have broken some other players' slumps recently and Gaborik has just two goals and three assists in his last nine games.  He's got to be licking his chops going against someone playing in just their second game.

Chris Drury: Even though he is not putting up the numbers he once was, I still consider him one of the most clutch players in the league.  Let's hope the puck isn't on his stick with a 2-2 tie and less than a minute to go.

As always, your presence is requested in the comments thread, where I can promise a good time no matter tonight's outcome!

It's not surprising to me

They started this way against Carolina, too. They just need to bury their chances for a change.

I really hope he’s a finalist for the masterton trophy.

hahaha, that’s why I wonder if he’d be excluded from masterton. I don’t think they like to give it to fighters.

one problem: we now have been without carkner for the majority of the game.

by DarrenM on Jan 14, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

Is this a typo?

Found this on hockeydb

It says the logo has been in use since 2009. I really hope this foreshadows a return of the old whites (and hopefully old blacks)

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Jan 14, 2010 7:51 PM EST reply actions

I hope so

That is my favorite sports logo. But I think they’re just keeping the copyright on it so no one else can use it.

by Mark Parisi on Jan 14, 2010 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

it's odd anyway you consider it

because it doesn’t have “Ottawa Senators” running down the right side like the previous side-profile logo did… so it’s kind of the same but different

by SCSF on Jan 14, 2010 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

never mind

just looked at an old puck and it doesn’t have that lettering. i’ve been smoking crack apparently

by SCSF on Jan 14, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

Mark Parisi’s user avatar has that lettering.

Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.

Stalker

I went with the old school, but they switched off the lettering after 96 I think

by Mark Parisi on Jan 14, 2010 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

noticed that a month ago, but didn’t read anything into it. It’d be nice to see that logo come back, though.

fired?

he’s just angling for the biggest buyout / settlement possible… which will be interesting, given the lack of a time clause in his contract. still, he’s got a decent argument given the number of years the show ran at 11:30.

by SCSF on Jan 14, 2010 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

good point.

did you see kimmel wearing the Leno hair/chin and doing the whole show as leno? fantastic.
