Silver Nuggets: Vegas Doesn't Like The Sens' Odds

All the news that's fit to print on the Ottawa Senators for Wednesday, September 23, 2009:

  • Update: For those of you who haven't been near Scotiabank place lately, it looks like a new face now graces it where Heatley's mug once stood. (Citizen)
  • Remember when I called the Ottawa Senators a huge wildcard, and recommended that you shouldn't be betting any money on this team? Well, the Las Vegas Hilton agrees, projecting Ottawa to finish the season with 83.5 points. That's good enough for 13th in the conference, ahead of only the Thrashers and the Islanders. In case you're wondering (and I know you are), they project the Leafs to reach 85.5 and also miss the playoff cut. (Las Vegas Sun)
  • Forward Lines from today's practice: Michalek-Spezza-Alfredsson; Kovalev-Regin-Fisher; Foligno-Shannon-Cheechoo; Ruutu-Kelly-Neil; Schubert-Donovan-Smith. Those three top lines all have some nice scoring potential -- the Senators may just be very dangerous offensively this year once they start to click. (James Gordon)
  • Ben over at Sens Army has a nice little piece on why fans (and the GM) should not be so quick to toss away a player like Chris Kelly. (Sens Army)
  • The National Post has a little piece up on Pascal Leclaire's preseason play, and how eager he is to get some more game action after having to sit out and watch last season. Nothing in there you weren't aware of before, but hey, it's a link, right? (National Post)
  • The Sens' official page has a quick look at how pleased Murray is with recent draft day success, including high praise for Jared Cowen "I could just see him, in November, being able to play at a very good level in this league," before noting that sending him down to the WHL was the best thing for his development. By the way, it's Cowen, not Cowan. I can't count the number of times I have seen it spelled incorrectly. (Sens Website)
  • Sportsnet released its list of the Top 50 NHL players, and two Ottawa Senators made the list: Daniel Alfredsson (#23) and Jason Spezza (#43). What, no Peter Regin?! (Sportsnet, via Sens Town)

Vegas Odds for the Sens

If I only had any money…I’d bet it all in Vegas on the Sens. So many people just aren’t paying attention to this team. They’re vastly improved in every area except that they need a D-Man that can throw body checks and stay sound defensively. That might be Carkner, but the sound defensively part is a major concern. The loss of Heatley was a huge blessing. Cheechoo will just be an overpaid checking winger, but he’ll be good at it until his contract expires.
