Pre-season game 5: Ottawa Senators v. Tampa Bay Lightning

Ottawa Senators at Tampa Bay Lightning, Sep 21, 2009 9:00 PM EDT

Exhibition Game 5: Ottawa Senators v. Tampa Bay Lightning
Evraz Place (Regina, SK), 9 p.m. EST
Radio: Team 1200 TV: None
Enemy: Raw Charge

As you may have read yesterday in our Silver Nuggets news run-down, Brian Elliott will play the whole game this evening in Regina. On defence, Jared Cowen's going to get his second taste of NHL action, and he's going to have a booster club in the stands, with his family making the short three-hour drive from Saskatoon [Ottawa Citizen]. I'm not sure how the defence lineup will work out, but the Citizen lists seven defencemen as dressing tonight... I don't quite think that's the case.

Here's tonight's lineup, according to the Ottawa Citizen:

Forwards
Milan Michalek Jason Spezza Daniel Alfredsson
Nick Foligno Ryan Shannon Alex Kovalev
Peter Regin Mike Fisher Jonathan Cheechoo
Jarkko Ruutu Chris Kelly Chris Neil
Defencemen
Filip Kuba Erik Karlsson
Jared Cowen Chris Phillips
Chris Campoli Brian Lee
(Spare: Matt Carkner)
Goaltenders
Brian Elliott
Mike Brodeur

I think you got the time wrong

The game is not supposed to start until 9 PM EDT (9:30 at latest) and I Bolts have been tweeting all day that the game is at the Brandt Center in Regina

To strive, to seek, to find, and to forever keep it Raw. Raw Charge.

Holy crap

That Ottawa lineup is going to annihilate the Lightning. Only Niitymaki can save the day. Wow.

Cowen is playing with Phillips. I declare him to be called The Bigger Rig.

by Ryan Classic on Sep 21, 2009 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

We can only hope.

That they annihilate them, not that Nittymaki saves TBL.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I just want James Wright and Kurtis Foster to have good games on Tampa. I like Niitty, too. But yeah, basically. 1-0 already. Dang.

Oh hey, an Ottawa goal

Didn’t catch who it was. Stupid NHL.com not having stats.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

Mike Fisher

Assisters forthcoming.

But really… can we afford not to keep him with Foligno and Regin?

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Based on tonight so far I’d take Cowen over Karlsson. All my friends in Spokane would be mad.

by Ryan Classic on Sep 21, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish I could watch it. Got the Team 1200 on. Believe me, if I had a stream, I’d be sharing it with everyone.

A friend’s cousin is playing on Tampa, which is all kinds of awesome.

I don't like the sound of that at all

Cowen playing well lessens the need to re-sign Volchenkov. And Volchenkov MUST be re-signed.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

He will be. Think positive.

Cowen will take over for Phillips once Big Rig retires.

Maybe.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Cowen’s going back to junior, anyway. I’d be buying tickets to the Chiefs-Giants game if he does. I want to call him Bigger Rig after tonight, but I’m supposedly not allowed to call him anything but Cow Cow.

Hey there’s Karlsson’s name. I don’t think he’s gelling with Kuba so well. Now with Campoli he blasted a shot. Liking the sound of this Spezza-Cheechoo-Michalek-Campoli-Karlsson combination. Awesome.

Is anyone else annoyed that Cowen is even playing? The kid’s just coming back from a knee injury! He’s probably not going to make the team, so why expose the knee to unnecessary hits before it needs to be? I don’t like risking the future goods just to get him experience.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Never watched the WHL, have you? His knee is going to take a beating. Cowen’ll be fine. I’ve got folks watching out for him. His chemistry tonight is really good.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Sep 21, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, his knee is going to take a beating at any level, right? That’s why I’d like to get him as much rehab time as possible before it starts.

I’m super pumped to hear he’s playing so well, though. That only means good things for the future.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I want to hear a Karlsson-Cowen pair. Yeah, Cowen’s playing very well. He sounds like Phillips with a touch of old Redden. Karlsson was invisible in the first and outstanding in the second. Giddy! Actually wearing my jersey (which I never wear outside).

by Ryan Classic on Sep 21, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

See: Karlsson/Hedman

I don’t know if Cowen’s going to be Hedman-calibre, but I imagine their styles would be alright together.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Cowen’s got offensive upside, and the girls in WA are telling me he is awesomeness on skates (that might be word for word). Karlsson’s just killing it out there.

Our new offensive depth is sounding good.

Wow, Karlsson and Cowen did get a few seconds together. Even on audio I got excited.

by Ryan Classic on Sep 21, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s exciting to me is that Michalek is making Spezza play with speed. That can only be good.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that seems to be a good chemistry in the works.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Sep 21, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Spezza seems like the guy who plays like who he plays with to complement him. Like how with Heatley he played small and just looked to set him up, maybe now he’ll be in on the forecheck with Michey.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought Karlsson had a similar game last night. He’s still taking a while to get his legs underneath him. I think it’s just a rookie comfortability/confidence thing. He’s got all the tools, except for the size — but he seems to offset that with his brains.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

He was cleared by doctors

And he’s not looking out of place. And he’s a first-round pick. And it’s his hometown crowd. And he’s against the lowly Lightning.

I’m alright with it. But I get your point… I’d hate to see something like that happen.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

This is why you’re hearing Wright on Tampa Bay all the time. Hometown boy. I have to give the Lightning serious credit for giving the crowd something after scratching, oh, the entire team.

Karlsson’s having a monster of a period. I forgot he was playing in the first.

I think that’s Murray’s long term plan. I’m almost more excited about this team for next year than this year. Still some significant roster revamp to do, but the future is looking brighter with every preseason game here.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

With the way that line is playing, Murray and Clouston would be nuts to break it up. Regin has to make this team, and if we have to eat a one-way contract in the minors to make that happen, so be it. Melnyk’s a billionaire; we can add it to the expenses like… Paddock’s buyout… Emery’s buyout… Hartsburg’s buyout…

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

DOWNIE!

High-sticked Michalek. Or something. No worries, he’s not injured. Man, I hate Downie.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

Downie: Preseason thug, Regular season bitch.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Son of a!

Carter Ashton scored.

I don’t know who that is.

Steve Downie had something to do with it.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

Carter Ashton is the William Zabka of the NHL. He comes from a rich family, and walks around with a blond mullet, fingerless workout gloves, and a sneer for the inferior.

“FEAR DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS DOJO!!”

Ok, maybe I’m just guessing based on his prissy name.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s two in two games. He must be getting ready to switch to “off” mode around, say, October 3rd?

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

in the thread now.

is cheechoo really playing 3rd line tonight?

by xBKx14 on Sep 21, 2009 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

tough to say...

tough to say what the hell the lines are. especially on the radio.

but foligno-regin-fisher are still together.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn’t particularly impressed by Cheechoo last night. Tim Murray says 20-25 goals is where they think he should be, but I think that may be a little optimistic based on the (admittedly little) games that I’ve seen. He’s more than willing to get in front of the net, which is great… he just needs to bring the puck with him.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

good character, willing to work.

can’t have enough guys like that. he can score to, cheechoo’s good for us, weather he scores 20 or 50 goals.

by xBKx14 on Sep 21, 2009 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

No argument, but Zach Smith can do the same thing for about three million less.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

You know, I used to be part of a podcast where whenever someone’s audio feed cut out, we’d say they’re in Saskatchewan.

I’m giggling right now.

fisher a goal, regin sets it up.

i’m liking that line.

Can we trade Chris Neil, please? He’s an extremely nice man, but there are Danish folk who need a roster place.

I’m secretly hoping James Wright takes him out. Okay, not so secretly.

by Ryan Classic on Sep 21, 2009 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Man... I wish.

Did we just sign him to keep him from Toronto? If so, can we now trade him to Phoenix?

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

My conspiracy theory is that Murray signed Neil to keep Burke from getting him.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

might be trade bait to ship away with kelly.

by xBKx14 on Sep 21, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

kelly= poor decisions

Michalek= smart defensive plays

Are we on the pk? i don’t even know.

Dean says PP is weak

Says some players are making their shifts too long. Sounds like something Spezza or Kovalev would do.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

kovy's done for the night.

stick to the face, right above the eye.

by xBKx14 on Sep 21, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Nobody’s seen a thing because nobody’s broadcasting it. But uh… wow. This is totally surreal for me. Cowen gets a penalty, then the other Sask boy takes out Kovalev on the next shift.

by Ryan Classic on Sep 21, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Kovalev’s back. Still surreal.

by xBKx14 on Sep 21, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, Mikey. Let’s just not tell him when the preseason ends.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

Must be something about the pressure of the regular season.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 21, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

All joking aside, I think a lot of the team has that problem: trying to do too much when things aren’t going well. From Alfie on down, they get away from their team game and put on capes when the pressure is on. Hopefully being a three line team alleviates that.

by Mark Parisi on Sep 21, 2009 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I made a comment to someone today, basically I’m alright with Neil getting smacked a bit as long as it wasn’t by Steve Downie.

good win.

Offense delivered, Defense stood strong, and ells seemed strong as well. well rounded from every aspect of our game. Well earned victory.

Good chatting with you guys. Wish everyone a pleasant a due.

Can’t wait for boston to come to town.
