Silver Nuggets: Cowen debuts tonight, Karlsson rooming with el capitano, and more
Senators-related headlines from around the web for Friday, September 18, 2009 (to be updated periodically if anything interesting pops up):
- Update: Jason Spezza and Chris Kelly will be wearing the 'A' on their jersey tonight. (Twitter)
- Update: Fanhouse picks the top prospects (not including 2009 draftees) for Eastern Conference teams, and for Ottawa they, of course, pick
Erik Karlsson...Patrick Wiercioch? I know that Wiercioch had a great college campaign last year, but that's still a surprising pick. (Fanhouse) - Update: TSN's Brent Wallace says that Cory Clouston was really impressed with a Cheechoo-Ryan Shannon-Kovalev line in practice, and that they will see icetime together in Saturday's game. Interesting not only because Shannon played as a winger last season, but also because Mike Fisher will likely be suiting up as well tomorrow, and the Sens' website (as seen a few lines down) seemed to think he'd be centering these newcomers, as he did on Wednesday. (Wallace on Twitter)
- The big story, of course, is that big draft pick Jared Cowen makes his debut tonight against the Canadiens. The Senators' website has a little feature on it. (Senators)
- "For the time being, Alex Kovalev, Mike Fisher, and Jonathan Cheechoo form the Senators' No. 2 line," says an article on the Senators' forward depth. The sound you hear is Nick Foligno demanding a trade for a reduced role. (Senators)
- It worked for Mario and Sidney: Erik Karlsson is currently living with Daniel Alfredsson and his family. Best part? "And if his Swedish girlfriend visits, the Alfredssons have a downstairs guest room for her." And here I thought Sweden was a little more progressive about those things... (Citizen)
- Speaking of the Ottawa Citizen, it calls out Brian Lee, Alex Picard, Cody Bass and Christoph Schubert as being on the bubble to make the roster this year. Strange that there's no mention of Jesse Winchester or Shean Donovan, who, by my count, are also on the edge. (Citizen)
- The Sun is already drawing attention to the Senators' lack of scoring in the preseason (no goals by forwards, no even strength goals, only a goal per game, etc). I can't wait until tomorrow's article, when they talk about dressing room problems, the need for a puck-moving defenceman, and more stability in goal. (Sun)
- Adam Proteau of THN has the Senators finishing 9th in the Eastern Conference this year, just behind... wait, Buffalo and Tampa Bay? Maybe it's opposite day. (The Hockey News)
- For those who are interested, there's a Dany Heatley press conference at 3:30pm EST to celebrate his arrival in San Jose. It'll be streamed on Sportsnet. (Sportsnet)
As always, be sure to come back tonight during the game to check out the Game Day Thread!

it doesn’t surprise me to see shannon playing center in practice. he actually started the season in bingo as a center, then eventually became a winger, then eventually moved up to ottawa.
question is, if clouston likes it enough to start the season with, who takes 3rd line right wing along side fisher and foligno? kelly?
I think he's actually playing centre
Hahahaha… I guess you get a pass, though, xBKx.

psh. shannon will be plaing CENTRE tonight.
i forgot sometimes that i’m an lone american among our canadian brethren.
I heard cheechoo lives in moose factory, ontario. that’s not to many MILES away from ottawa.
psh, you guys and your kilometers.
hahaha, i’m kidding
You’re not the lone American. I’m in Phoenix, AZ.

and also...
it’s cool to see karlsson rooming with alfie. it should make him feel how important he is to this organization (if it wasn’t already obvious enough) and is a step towards making a future key player grow attached to our city and team. (maybe he could be a captain someday, i wouldn’t rule it out for the distant future)
Center or Centre lets go with Ctr
I am a Brit living in Ottawa and I am with you xBKx14 I think Center is definitely the correct way. But up here in Canada they brew better beer than the U.S so they can spell CENTRE any way they like :-)
Clouston played Fisher for one game last season on the right wing and i think that was his best game of the year. There is so much pressure on him to be that 2nd line Ctr that some times he doesn’t look like he is enjoying himself, plus the facts he doesn’t have the hands for 2nd line Ctr.
If Shannon does get a crack at 2nd line Ctr – Foligno Kelly Fisher 3rd line.
Also add to this didn’t Foligno also play Ctr in Junior??
xxBKx14 we should have a discussion how we pronounce Aluminum that drives me crazy!!!!
Ctr, well done. that solves our differences on the matter. haha.
and you have a point, with the beer they brew, they have the right to spell it “retnec” if they wanted to.
and well, i don’t think it’s necessarily wrong they way they spell it, it’s just i’ve been tought to spell it center. it’s different. for example i’m sure a british or a canadian person can agree that it’s odd how we don’t use metric systems like, kilometers and whatnot.
