"I talked to Cogs ([Andrew] Cogliano) and he was devastated," [Ladislav] Smid said. "It was just weird to see our names out there. Usually someone calls you and tells you that you got traded. But sitting there and not knowing whether you got traded or not is different. It took a really long time, it took almost a month before Heatley decided whether he was going to come to another team."

right, it's really not fair to them.
i was really looking forward to seeing them in red at a point in time.
Well, there’s no reason Edmonton would have leaked those names. That leaves Ottawa to throw them out there. If that’s true, it was a shady thing to do.
Ottawa making questionable personnel decisions? Unlikely.

There’s no reason for Ottawa to do it either. If other GMs find out who you are accepting, than that becomes the bar that is set and other teams instantly refuse to offer anything higher.
It could also have been a third team… say Ottawa told NYR what they were receiving from EDM to try and get a competitive offer, and it was leaked on the NYR end.
Whatever it was, it’s shitty for those three. Well, maybe not Penner because he’s in the doghouse anyway, but if it’s something Ottawa brass did than they shouldn’t be proud of it.

Yeah, there’s no doubt it’s just an ugly thing, especially for a kid like Cogliano. I’m not sure what a third team would stand to gain by leaking info, but obviously we can’t rule it out. My suspicions, though, are that Murray leaked it to try to drive up the price from another team and the move backfired.
