Summer Fill: A conversation with Matchsticks & Gasoline, part deux
Yesterday you may have seen the questions I posted to Kent from Matchsticks & Gasoline, all about the Calgary Flames. Now here's the questions he sent my way, as well as my best attempts at response:
1.) Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way first: What's the feeling about Dany Heatley in Ottawa these days? If he ends up having to play for the club, will he be met with boos and cat calls every home game?
2.) If Heatley were to get traded, what does your ideal return look like? Alternatively, what's the most likely return going to be?
3.) Has Murray handled the Heatley issue well in your estimation?
4.) Murray's most significant signing this summer was Alexei Kovalev. From the angle out West, $5M for a 36 year old guy who gets his points on the power play and doesn't play much in the way of defense seems kind of steep. What do you think of the signing?
5.) It's been a precipitous fall from grace for a team that made the finals a couple of years ago. Are fans getting restless or is optimism returning?

“If he plays well and Ottawa still doesn’t look good, he’d be a hell of a deadline-day pickup for any team getting set.”
I understand that a team may want a big-time scorer at the trade deadline, but what could they give up that wouldn’t hurt that team that we would want? This isn’t a rental situation where you trade a UFA for draft picks or prospects. Probably you have it figured better than me so let me know. Thanks.

Like Han Solo said, “Well… that’s the real question, isn’t it?”
It’s hard to imagine a team with a lot of guns dumping a bunch of players to add one more gun, like the Penguins did two years ago with Hossa. A team that feels they’re close to a Cup and only need one more scorer probably won’t give up a chunk of what they feel is making them close.
I think a more likely trading party would be a team who is looking just to make it over the hump — look at what Atlanta gave up to get Zhitnik, Tkachuk, and Dupuis in the 2006-7 season. You have to believe a team like Florida or Minnesota last year would give up a nice package of picks and players to get Heatley if they thought offensive firepower was the missing key to making the playoffs.

I’d GUESS that it would involve their top prospect, and a 1st rounder, or maybe a top six forward. Not the key guys who they rely on for the playoff push, but let’s face it – if your team did good with an average top-six winger and you think you’ve got a shot at the Cup, you might be very interested in trading that winger and a couple of picks for Heatley, who should push you over the top.
