Oilers say they will stay in the Heatley deal until the bitter end. Could be a long wait.

This is a fairly obvious question, but:

Why? He would be eaten alive. It might die down after a bit, but I honestly don’t know if his ego can handle it. I’m not being snide here, he’s showing that criticism from anywhere hurts.

Honestly, Oilers fans will jump up and down in delight if they get Heatley. They need a Heatley. In this past season, one of Heatley’s worst, he got 39 goals. Their last 39 goal scorer? Ryan Smyth. Back in… 95, I think?

I realize right now that Oilers fans are skeptical of Heater, but once that guy starts putting up goals they will love him.

They do need a Heatley, they just don’t deserve Heatley. One of my best friends is a diehard Oilers fan, and we were in the same room when the June 30 deal supposedly went down. I don’t know who was happier: him for not getting Heatley, or me for not getting Penner.

The next day he was praying for Havlat or Gaborik before turning scorn back Dany’s way. Lowetide will never stop ripping him to shreds. Penner has taken everything in stride (see "you need a fat guy, like in Ice Hockey on Nintendo), but that hasn’t stopped him from being just one of many punching bags by fans and media.

On the optimism about a new trade, I wouldn’t mind the “certainly different deal” to include Eberle.

Seriously, why?

How can they want someone so badly when he obviously doesn’t want to be there?

if ovechkin initially didn’t want to come here but Murray managed to trade for him, would you say you don’t want him?

Heatley is the type of talent that the oilers haven’t seen in their club in years. they’d love to have a star over there.

I guess that’s a good point. Still, you have to think that if Heatley is traded to a city he doesn’t want to be in, it won’t be long before he’s asking for a trade out of there, too. If he’s reluctant to go to Edmonton, he has all the hand while he’s there — like guys who chase after beautiful girls and then make themselves miserable bending over backwards just to keep them.

Sure, I’d like Ovechkin. I’d love Ovechkin. But OV is a different personality than Heatley, and a person’s character is worth a lot. Just polled my friend, his words, “Sure, we’d love to have Heatley. We would love a 50 goal scorer. But it’s going to require a lot of ass kissing and more for us to be okay with having him as a person.”

It’s been a fun few days having a regular back and forth about this here. It’s one thing to argue and converse over the internet, but having that face to face conversation about it is pretty revealing about the mindset of Oiler fans.

Tambellinni press conference is on now, it sounds like that meeting with Heatley wasn’t much to talk about. Melnyk’s on the Fan 590 today was great.

At this rate, heatley's not going anywhere.

the list of teams he wants to go to is getting thinner and thinner. almost every team on that list has committed to another player with a big cap hit already. The kings brought in ryan smyth today, calgary signed j-bo, hossa to the haws, you guys know what i mean. I can’t imagine these teams plan on trying to fit heater into there payroll after the big aquisitions they have already made. so it seems it’s all up to if he’d rather be in ottawa or edmonton, and he already said no to edmonton once.
