Open Thread: 2009 Draft Day bonanza

Although the draft won't begin until 7:00 p.m. tonight, the Senators still have plenty to talk about in the hours leading up to the big day. Meaning, of course, discussion: Do you want Dany Heatley to be traded? Where do you want him to be trade? What do you want back? When will the deal be done?

And then, of course, there's the actual draft, the actual big deal for the day. The Ottawa Senators are drafting ninth overall in the first round tonight, and will also have the following picks later on, pending wheeling and dealing from Bryan Murray:

  • Round two, 39 overall
  • Round two, 46 overall (from Columbus, with Pascal Leclaire for Antoine Vermette)
  • Round four, 100 overall
  • Round five, 130 overall
  • Round five, 146 overall (from Boston via Phoenix, for Brian McGrattan)
  • Round six, 160 overall
  • Round seven, 190 overall

With eight draft picks, it'll be the busiest draft for the Senators since 2005. And wit ha disgruntled winger demanding a trade, it'll be busy in more ways than one.

How about a “Who cares, so long as we get that scumbag as far from Ottawa as possible” option?

LA is pretty far. That’ll do. Too bad there’s no team in Chile.

keep Heatley

how many 50 goal scorers in the league? …. we want to win the Stanley Cup … who the heck cares if Heatley is unhappy or Bloggy is in a snit cuz his feelings are hurt by Heatley’s trade request? This is a business and the Sens need Heatley’s scoring ability.

I'd like him gone today.

This team’s had to deal with too many distractions in the last few seasons. Another one, which was obvious, and could be dealt with quickly, is not a good thing.

As unpalatable as it would be to trade Heatley for a ‘lower than market’ return, there is a bigger issue it addresses: the Senators’ poor salary structure. It needs to be balanced out, in my opinion, before the Senators will really have the pieces to compete for a Stanley Cup again.

with Heatley, the Sens have enough to win next year

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

most people get rid of assets to get an offsetting tradeoff - one step back for two steps forward - dumping Heatley is like taking one step back for the sake of one step back. It is just a bad mgmt move.

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

consider this

If before Heatley had his little pout, someone told you about these proposed trades … would you have thought them to be good trades? Hell no! (is the unbiased response).

Bottom line, do not let your emotions about Dany Heatley’s poor behavior lead you to make bad decisions for the team.

Not true

Long before Heatley demanded a trade, I thought he’d be the most reasonably-traded of the big three. His value would be the highest, his cap hit is also the highest, and—in my opinion—he’s the most one-dimensional.

As evidence, I traded him in NHL 2K9 as soon as I started my Senators franchise. If I controlled the team, he’d be gone.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

well in my 2K9

I fired PeterR as manager of the Sens …. LOL

I may not agree with your team mgmt, but I defend your right to play it that way on your game console. LOL

More seriously, Heatley is expensive, but he is not really replaceable. Assuming Leclaire works out, I think the Sens are good enuf to win the cup. Kuba’s contribution to D and power play is not fully recognized, I think. If the Sens can add one or two assets in the offseason, they are ready for a run at the cup … and Heatley’s scoring touch is an important part of it.

I think our key difference is that you are more about building for the future, whilst I think the window is closing for the team as Alfredsson ages and the team needs to make a run now.

I can back this up. I think Peter and I have discussed previously that we’d both trade Heater before we’d trade Spezz. Or maybe I imagined that.

Is it all but finalized?

Globe and Mail staffers are saying Dean Lombardi appears ready to give the deal his blessing, and a lot of people are calling it:

Heatley for Frolov, Johnson, and the fifth overall pick.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Picard was a part of the deal.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

gross

that would be just an absolutely terrible trade if it is done

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

G&M not, actually, saying that

Sorry, I missed an important ‘if’ in the quote. This is what the quote is, from the Globe and Mail live blog, with Steve McAllister quoting Eric Duhatschek:

Saw kings gm dean lombardi heading out for a run a few minutes ago, so assume if he’s making the dany heatley deal, it won’t be for a few hours. Kings coach terry murray was in the lobby, holding court, which begs the question: does the fact that sens gm bryan murray is trying to peddle heatley to a team coached by his brother help or hurt the process?

Although Steve McAllister did say the following:

“Good chance Heatley will be dealt tonight.”

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

based on what?

Steve McAllister’s speculation is not exactly a good source

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

How is Johnson's defense?

I’ve heard good things but haven’t read much into it.

by Matthew on Jun 26, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

... with the Los Angeles Kings

And anyway, a defenceman with a poor +/- can look good on the bottom pairing, but the top powerplay. But I think a shooter would look good alongside Kuba on the top powerplay; where’s Souray when you need him?

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

of course you never know

Campoli’s +/- was horrible but then he came to the Sens and he shined and generated the best stats of his career

Holy shit, Anaheim

Just massacred the Flyers in a trade:

To Philly:
D Chris Pronger

To Anaheim:
D Luca Sbisa
F Joffrey Lupul
2009 first-round pick
2010 first-round pick

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

exactly

look at the sh*t deals people were offering up for Heatley …. get freaking real

the guy is a 50 goal scorer (and I really don’t give a damn if he is happy or not) and people were offering up 2 mediocre players and a lame pick - get real

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Effing hell

I guess all the crap about the fifth-overall pick was bollocks.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 7:57 PM EDT reply actions

(L.A. kept it and picked Brayden Schenn)

HEATLEY HEATLEY HEATLEY

we love you baby! you belong with the Sens!

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

you will love him again

when he bulges the twine 50+ times next year

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

hopefully, we (Heatley, Sens & Sens fans)

can put this all behind us and get on to focusing on winning the cup

just a little misunderstanding among friends…. no point in burning bridges

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

It's a little late to be concerned about burning bridges...

You can be sure Clouston’s not going anywhere this season, so Heatley’s either going to be dealt or he’s going to have to build a new bridge with his bare hands. If I want to piss on his bridge, he’ll have to tell me he likes it.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Heatley is overdue for a life lesson

whether it is Senators or another team who teach him …. really does not matter

just like our man Ray Emery … coming back to the Flyers a much humbler man, I am sure

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I figured he'd go before ninth...

Plus don’t we need forwards? I guess if Karlsson joins the NHL this season, some young guys for Binghamton would be nice. Although maybe Wiercioch (more likely) and Borowiecki (less likely) will make the AHL some day.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Toronto picks Kadri

I figured Ottawa’d get Kadri, but I don’t think Murray’s too disappointed if they pick Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi. I actually like MSP more, especially when he joins Karlsson and Alfredsson in a Sens uniform.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

Senators pick Jared Cowan

Well, he’s a big lad. I like that… pair him up with Anton Volchenkov in a couple of years, and scare a few opponents away.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 26, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

Murray says

“we will probably have Dany Heatley play left wing on our team if [a trade] does not work out”

by aagoodfella on Jun 26, 2009 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

I love how MSP’s dad wanted to give him a high five when he was drafted. Ummm… a hug is too much?
