Ottawa's goalie depth chart is 2003 all over again
While doing a piece tonight on everyone's favourite backup backup goaltender, Mike Brodeur, I noticed an interesting little tidbit: Not Martin was drafted in 2003. That's the 2003 legendary draft class, the one where 29 of the 30 first-round picks have played NHL games. The 2003 draft is also the one with two ninth-round picks playing goal in the NHL today: Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott. I thought this was interesting, so I did a little more digging and now present to you the Ottawa Senators 2009-10 goaltending depth chart:
- Pascal Leclaire, 2001 (1st round, 8th overall), Columbus Blue Jackets
- Brian Elliott, 2003 (9th round, 291st overall), Ottawa Senators
- Mike Brodeur, 2003 (7th round, 211th overall), Chicago Blackhawks
- Andy Chiodo, 2003 (7th round, 199th overall), Pittsburgh Penguins
- Chris Holt, 2003 (6th round, 180th overall), New York Rangers

Wow... numbers two through five all from the same year?
That’s such a crazy coincidence (or is it?). That 2003 draft class is just freakin’ unbelievable. I wonder what the hell happened that season to make it so strong…

The part I find amusing is how the depth chart is inverse to the order they were drafted.

I hadn’t noticed that, but yeah, that’s hilarious. And it tells you how much of a crapshoot drafting goalies can be.

Brodeur was drafted a couple years after he was eligible and Chiodo was drafted twice, first time in 2001. But yeah, crazy, eh? Should look at the goalies that year. There’s a loooot of career AHLers. And Fleury. And Halak/Elliott.
