Game 35: Ottawa Senators v. Minnesota Wild

Minnesota Wild at Ottawa Senators, Dec 19, 2009 7:00 PM EST

The Senators take on the Minnesota Wild for the first and only time in Ottawa this season at 7 p.m. tonight. Some things to watch for in tonight's game:

  • Mike Brodeur - Cory Clouston waited until Pascal Leclaire was on the verge of returning before giving Brodeur some game action. How will he do in his first NHL game?
  • Erik Karlsson - He's had two very strong games in a row, and should get plenty of ice time tonight to continue trying for his first NHL tally.
  • Minnesota's equipment problems: Most, if not all, of the Wild players are going to be breaking in new equipment, or using their practice gear, after their equipment truck caught fire yesterday. Will this affect their game?
  • Fatigue: The Senators played a tough game against the New Jersey Devils last night, and Minnesota was waiting for them today. Will the Senators be tired before the game begins?
  • Martin Havlat: A familiar face who's struggling big time since signing in Minnesota. How does he do in his return to Ottawa?
  • Chris Campoli: Another game up front for the defenceman-cum-forward, and he's looked good so far on a line with Ryan Shannon and Josh Hennessy.
As always, join us in the comments for the live in-game discussion of the game, its commercials, and the intermission pundits from CBC (among other things).

Other players worth watching:

Filip Kuba: He needs a bounce-back game more than anyone else on the roster.

Alex Kovalev – He has been showing some effort lately. Now, that effort needs to translate into goals.

Also of note: Havlat sure seems like the same old Mach 9: despite going 4-14-18, he is tied for the team worst at –11.

WOOOOOOOOO!

Who here is listening to Don Johnson – “Heartbeat” to pump up for this game?!

Not Martin

It’s time. Not only did Clouston wait until the very last game, he waited until the other team lost 80% of their equipment.

And it's a home game

He’s trying his hardest to set him up for success.

Elliot was not good last night. We had a chance until he let that shot in from center ice…

by BorisB on Dec 19, 2009 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

You know what? Smart idea

If Not Martin had started a couple games earlier, and played well, it would have generated a stupid-ass goaltending controversy about who should start the next game, and the next game, and the next game. But the team wanted Elliott to run with it, because they want to know how he handles it, and they know that when Leclaire returns, Brodeur is heading back down thanks to his two-way contract.

Geek Moment

I finally got VMWare to work so I can watch the CBC stream of the game in fullscreen on another monitor and switch between programs. I really hate how fullscreen automatically cancels out if you switch apps.

You can’t get the CBC one online? You only have to sit through a trailer for Up In The Air twice.

And Peter: CBC.ca. Not the best quality, but it does the trick.

I’m a complete geek. I’m also an AV technician as well. I’ve got two monitors, and if I open, say, Safari and put it on one of them, open the stream, and hit fullscreen, the moment I switch back to Firefox on the other monitor it exits fullscreen.

So I found a workaround that is kind of ridiculous.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

I love having two monitors

I worked that way a couple of years back when I worked for a newspaper here. It’s freakin’ awesome. Except I never used full screen, because I needed all of the real estate on one monitor and a little bit on the other for InDesign.

I was in AV club in my last year in high school.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

That's silly

What video card are you using for your dual screen setup? I’m thinking of doing something similar.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

MacBook Pro, GeForce 9600M GT at the moment. Combine it with a little bit of trickery using VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 on the external monitor.

Peter: We didn’t have an AV Club, part of being the least cared about school in the Ottawa-Carleton School Board. But I’m a part-time AV Tech at UBC. I’ve had the job for 4 years.

I used StubHub to get into the Sens game out here

And I got fantastic seats at 25% of face value. I don’t know if that’s due to the site or the Coyotes troubles, though.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

$150 per ticket, upper bowl, 5 minutes before the first period was over.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yep. We hung around for the first period to try getting in on the cheap. Ended up going back home and getting a bottle of gin instead.

Lowest price I saw anything go for was 5 tickets for $500 that one guy was shouting out as his last offer. I saw $250 for upper bowl, two rows from the back. Club seats were over $300.

Ottawa is so different...

Especially now that no one’s buying tickets here. They’re so cheap.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

Wow. Brutal. You’d think they’d, you know, want to get something for the tickets, instead of trying to gouge you at a risk of getting nothing.

Speaking of,

anyone have any experience in Calgary? I’m thinking of taking a trip up there sometime.

by Matthew on Dec 19, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

St. Louis tickets for tomorrow are already at below face value. But yeah, Vancouver is BRUTAL. My roommate grabbed tickets for $80 apiece to Edmonton-Vancouver two months ago. The (soapbox) got a pair at $60 each from her co-blogger. Furthest back row. These are the only two games I’ve been to here.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

That's really surprising to hear

I could wipe my ass with ice-level tickets here in Phoenix and get two more of them at half face-value.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:15 PM EST up reply actions

I looked at buying season’s tickets in Phoenix. Just because. Under $1000.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

I really believe it could be game seven of the Finals

And I could walk up to the box office on gameday and get ice level seats. I haven’t seen more than 4,000 people at a game since their opening night, and that took a massive free ticket giveaway to achieve.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Probably. I know a few diehard fans. They make it hard to hate the Coyotes or want them to move. Still, it’s bad. We were stuck with a radio broadcast and a live feed of the scoreboard when trying to watch the Phoenix-Ottawa game online.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Monroe didn't profile great and hasn't played great.

They need OL help obviously, but Monroe wasn’t and isn’t worth what a 4th overall pick costs. Curry was and will be.

by Matthew on Dec 19, 2009 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

They need more than help, they're desperate

And Tatupu was already a stud linebacker. AND Hawethorne is apparently amazing as well. Locklear is not as amazing at LT.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

Yes

but you don’t draft for need. That’s a surefire way to fuck up your team. Always take the best talent available and that was Curry.

OL should have been addressed further in free agency. Unger has been a very good draftee.

by Matthew on Dec 19, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

I think that's debatable in the top 10 picks

It’s not like Curry isn’t a studbeast, but the talent gap between Monroe and Curry wasn’t wide enough to justify the BPA strategy in my opinion. They’re obviously not going to get a top five pick this year, so they gambled that they can get an equal talent as Monroe later in this year’s draft. If they’re right, they’re geniuses. If they’re not, I feel bad for Hasslebeck and Forsett.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Especially for any Canadian team.

I keep wanting to go to OTT-VAN games, but I’m not shelling out that much for tickets.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

McGrattan’s awesome, though. He’s a hitter, a fighter, he can skate, and he actually does have good hands. In the AHL, McGrattan could score 20 if he stayed out of the box. Koci, by the sounds of it, can’t do shit.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

He hits people and wears 28. He also makes it so they don’t have another rookie on the roster. Colorado won a game last week with 7 rookies dressed amongst the 18 skaters.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

There are so many veterans they could have signed...

Lang, McAmmond, Arnason (wouldn’t you like to see him again?), whoever else. So many better than Koci.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Oh god, Tyler Arnason. I burst out in laughter when Sather signed him.

The summer of Raycroft and Tucker signings hurt. Seeing Sakic go down when I had tickets to see him in San Jose towards the end of the season was sad. It did sink the team enough to get Duchene, which is kind of awesome. That makes me feel a little better.

The Avs have cut salary by an awful lot. The ownership group puts money into whichever team (Avs or Nuggets) looks decent, and cuts payroll on the other. Smyth was traded for Quincey and Preissing (!) because that cut the $6M salary to $3M.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

Man… how bad is Preissing right now? He and Redden have fallen so far, so fast…

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

Preissing for me was another “oh you are NOT serious” move. Quincey stole his #27 while Preissing was injured, which I thought was absolutely hilarious. I think he’s in Cleveland right now with the AHL team.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

That has to be disheartening as a fan.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

It was until Quincey played really, really well. The rookies really stepped up their game, too. Duchene’s turned up his game, O’Reilly has been a very good defensive forward, even taking faceoffs in the defensive end when up a goal with 30 seconds left. T.J. Galiardi has also been pretty good.

When Wolski wants to, he can play really darn well. Anderson’s quieted down but he’s still pretty solid on a team that routinely lets 30 shots against.

Seriously, we should just pull our goalie on every PP

Because that’s the only way we’re going to have a chance at scoring.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:22 PM EST reply actions

Actually, I'd bet we're better 4-4 than 6-4.

We should do the opposite and put in two goalies! No SHG allowed ever.

by Matthew on Dec 19, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

All right, no hyperbole

But I think we’re one of the better 4-on-4 teams in the league.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:30 PM EST reply actions

Not Not Martin had a save percentage of .500 against Atlanta after six shots. Maybe.

It would kill me if M. Brodeur got a shutout before M. Brodeur beat the shutout record. Unaware people seeing replays would wonder what BRODEUR (W, SO) would mean when the Ottawa-Minnesota game would get recapped.

I wish I could tell people that we acquired Martin for Kovalev but his stats were erased because this team is the new Sens and not the original franchise.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Does a team play better in front of a sub par goalie?

Personal story: In rec summer hockey a few years ago, we threw a defenceman who had never so much as worn goalie equipment before in his life into the fire, where he pitched a 7 save shutout. Is this applicable outside of garbage hockey?

by Dany Hea-Traitor on Dec 19, 2009 8:31 PM EST reply actions

Vancouver played really well in front of Raycroft this year. I watched Raycroft in training camp. I never believed it was possible for him to get a shutout.

Harding was something ridiculous like 2-13 last year despite having GAA and SV% in the top ten, so it might go the other way, too.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

I believe that it is

You don’t want to let your teammates down. I think it’s different when you know he’s going to let you down (Like Gerber so often last year) but until you know… you want to step up for him.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

Another victim of the MGS is Toskala. His team just gives up in front of him. How they play for MacDonald in comparison is unreal.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

It's true

Though in Ottawa, the team didn’t deflate until the bad goal came. They haven’t pulled that this year, though both Elliot and Leclaire have let in some WEAK goals.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

True. A perfect example was the 96-second lead festival that was the Anaheim game. Somehow they stuck with it and won. In a shootout.

This thing about Ottawa being the worst shootout team all-time is a little confusing to me. This season and last they haven’t been at the bottom of the shootout record list. I can only fathom that it’s because of a bad first two seasons and some discrepancies like Dallas being awful this year and great last year evening them out.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

They have truly been terrible on the shootout

No matter who the guy was, it was always a surprise when they scored. I’m at the point where I expect our shooters to get stopped.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

2009-10: 2-3
2008-09: 4-6
2007-08: 3-5
2006-07: 2-6
2005-06: 2-6

Okay, they’ve never really been the worst team in any given year, but that’s a lot of accumulated sucking. 13-26.

In 2007-08, Edmonton was 15-4, a total of 6 more wins than any other team.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

More than that

Since the west coast trip, his effort level has been great. He’s racked up a bunch of posts in that time, so even though he hasn’t gotten a ton of goals, he’s certainly getting chances.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

He's earned it.

There is a weird judgement matrix for Sens heroes, and it’s often how they play with respect to reasonable expectations, and with respect to their play to date in the season. It’s complicated.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it's been the hardest thing to learn as an editor

You plug in the stats and the matrix is like, “Kuba” and you’re like “KUBA?!!”

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

by Matthew on Dec 19, 2009 8:42 PM EST reply actions

I think a lot of that is aided by retrospect...

I mentioned to two people the other night that I was sick of Olympic consideration talk and that they need to pick the team already. Then they all agreed.

It was after ANOTHER round of “Has Mike Fisher played himself into Olympic consideration?” dead pause “No.” on TV.

We also watch Tampa a lot, and are constantly reminded that Stamkos has been good for most of the year and that “he’s only nineteen!” We’ve worked that line into about a dozen conversations.

I hope he doesn't go

I don’t care about honors, I want him to get two week’s rest.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

He won't go

But he’s played himself into consideration as a consideration. He’s a name that’s mentioned, even if he is quickly dismissed.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

In that case

I’m in consideration as the next owner of the Sens. I just need a few billion more…

I won the Coyotes in a Twitter auction a few months ago. I offered a pudding snack pack, turkey sandwiches, and Rob Schremp.

My team is kind of ridiculous. I have Vermette for faceoffs. Chicago plays every Sunday it seems, and I constantly add John Madden for one game, drop him, and grab him again the next week.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Steve Begin. He’s LW/C and always takes faceoffs. Malkin is C and should be a winger because the most I’ve seen him win this year was 5. Versteeg gets me a few wins here and there. The guy is a rock for PP and SH points on a decently regular basis.

I’ve given up on winning +/-. I’ve had 3 more goals and 6 more assists than my opponent and lost +/- by 17.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

I’m almost 50 FWs up on my opponent.

I have 3G and 6A more, too, but I’m four down in +/-.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

I have a decent opponent this week. I’m against the Faceoff Hockey Show rep for my division/league. He knows what’s up. I’m a rookie at this stuff.

Next year I’m entering a league with a team of nothing but rookies.

Yeah

There’s going to be a controversy anyway

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

Brodeur will have better stats than Elliott and Leclaire. This is Ottawa. CONTROVERSY!

I blame it on Spezza.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

No controversy

Leclaire starts Monday, Not Martin goes back to Bingo and begins a goaltending controversy THERE; Chris Holt is 3-1 in four starts since being recalled from Elmira, with two shutouts, while Andy Chiodo is a meagre 2-2-1 since Not Martin came to Ottawa.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

I want to dispute this on tomorrow's podcast

There is no reason to play Leclaire before Christmas

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Christmas bonus if he can stay healthy enough to play 17 games before December 25?

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve always called him Spazzy. I thought his actual nickname (well, one of) Pazzy wasn’t quite indicative of his skills at being a rubber bouncy ball on the ice.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

What about the fact that he's ready?

That’s reason enough. There’s really no grey area with a cheek injury.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Nope, not buying into that at all

He’s been out a month. Is he really in game shape after five practices?

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

The man is made of rubber. If he can bounce, he can play.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Every injury creates a new place for rubber to be inserted. Watch the guy bounce when he comes back. The vertical lines on his pads make it stand out.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Chiodo.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

That’d be an emergency callup. We’re trying to get healthy, contracted goalies in here.

Or is Chiodo a purely minor league deal?

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think Chiodo’s just a minor league deal, but it’s easy to get those into two-ways. But right now, he’s not even Binghamton’s number one.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

Karlsson. Is. So. Good.

Most improved player, by a long shot. Including Cheechoo.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 9:15 PM EST reply actions

You are forgetting Weircioch

Who also might be studly. And Volchenkov. That could be a sick top 4.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 19, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Along with the eventual captaincy of Chris Phillips in the bottom 6.

And Shane Hnidy.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

I like Fisher, but I’ve always seen Phillips as the next C. I’ve also told Spokane girls that I’ll buy a Cowen captain jersey if he ever gets there. Truthfully I want a Karlsson, but I’ll wait until (a) better jerseys, (b) his eventual switch to #5.

5. I found one of him with Frolunda (Jr, I believe) wearing 8. When he came to Ottawa Schubert still had 5, Lee had 55, and Daugavins 56.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

I guess 8 is actually retired in Ottawa?

I was always unsure if that was a serious retired, or a ceremonial retired.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 19, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s a real retirement, but I seem to recall Daigle switching to 8 when Martin put his foot down on the everyone-wear-something-lower-than-35 rule (which I like).

You can still get an official Ilya Zubov jersey at NHL.com. Still not as good as the Luke Richardson one I posted on Puck The Media this week, but awesome.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:21 PM EST reply actions

Surprising.

Wouldn’t have thought they still held any rights to publicity based on players out of the league.

After Nick Adenhart (Angels) died last spring, MLB automatically removed his jersey, per that policy.

by SCSF on Dec 19, 2009 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

Weirder is that you can get a third jersey. He retired just under a month before the black thirds were ever worn. And he’s an assistant coach with the team.

The Magnus Pajaarvi-Svensson (spelling may be off on that) Oilers one is my favourite purchasable jersey.

ryanclassic.net

by Ryan Classic on Dec 19, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty darn close

on that MPS spelling (shuffle the double “a”). A lot of Kings fans here wanted him with the 5th pick, lol.

by SCSF on Dec 19, 2009 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

Incidentally, you could get a Brayden Schenn jersey officially on the NHL store weeks before he got his one game PTO.

But this jersey is just awesome

You can’t add them at all normally. Edmonton has crazy amounts of jerseys. You can buy a Linus Omark or Olivier Roy jersey. I’ve got screenshots of some really bizarre ones. There was a 7th rounder last year for the Islanders – you can buy his.

All-around awesome. So much to cheer for… Karlsson’s first, Not Martin’s almost shutout, two goals for McAmmond, a strong game from top to bottom…
