Silver Nuggets: Spezza has torn MCL, Foligno injured, Campoli to play forward

Good afternoon Sens fans, and welcome to another highly anticipated edition of Silver Nuggets, your collection of all the Ottawa Senators headlines fit to print:

  • According to Ian Mendes, Jason Spezza has a torn MCL in his right knee and will miss 6-8 weeks. Clouston said they'll be lucky if he's back before the Olympic break. Uh-oh. (Mendes)
  • To make matters worse, Nick Foligno is out for tonight's game with a lower body injury. At the skate this morning, Peter Regin took Nick's spot on the second line, and on the fourth line with Ryan Shannon and call up Josh Hennessy was... defenceman Chris Campoli. It makes sense, I guess, as he's the best d-man on the team at joining the rush, but it's still worrisome. (Mendes)
  • Other injury updates: Clouston hopes Leclaire and Neil can return next Wednesday for the game against the Penguins. (Score)

Star-divide

  • Though commentators on Sportsnet and TSN have speculated as much, Canada's Olympic team assistant coach Lindy Ruff has put it on record that Mike Fisher is on the team's radar and in consideration. Fisher probably won't make the team, but I'm sure he's quite flattered just to be in the conversation. (Examiner)
  • It turns out prospect Robin Lehner will be a part of Team Sweden's World Junior squad -- he'll travel with the team as their "third goalie." Congrats to him on the honour, even if it just means he gets free tickets to watch some games. It'll be a good experience. (Sault Star)
  • Another Ottawa Senators Blog with an interesting article, crunching the numbers to show how the Senators' offence is more potent with Pascal Leclaire in net. (AOSB)
  • Sens players spread some Christmas cheer by visiting children at hospitals. (Senators)

Campoli a forward?

I kind of thought Matt Carkner would be bumped up to fourth-line duty, but I guess Clouston would rather preserve the defensive group as much as possible. I wonder how well Campoli will do; I never had much luck jumping up from defence to forward, but good luck to him.

I think that would’ve been the call at the start of the season, but Carkner is likely seen as necessary on the back end.

If Campoli really stumbles, I could see a mid-game adjustment, though.

I would think Karlsson is the best option at forward

He is the most offensively gifted of our defensemen.

What’s the over/under on Campoli’s minutes at forward? I’m calling six.

That sounds about right.

Overlooked so far:

How does Ryan Shannon feel about everyone else on his line getting a promotion, while he has to toil with an AHLer and a defenceman on the fourth line?

Sens are missing a forward from each of their four forward lines, as well as as a starting goalie. It’s not good, but it could be worse.

Worse than the Hurricanes?

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
