Speculation: Blue Jackets interested in Lee?

Photo

FRED CHARTRAND - AP

Ever since Brian Lee was sent down to the AHL, there has been speculation that he is no longer in Ottawa's plans. There were plenty of rumours going around, even some that involved the Blue Jackets, but Peter and I ignored them because they were not all that credible. Today, Aaron Portzline, beat reporter for the Columbus Dispatch, wrote that the Blue Jackets have made a call inquiring about Lee:

The Blue Jackets have expressed an interest in Ottawa Senators prospect defenseman Brian Lee, The Dispatch has learned.

No trade is imminent. In fact, it's possible that no trade specifics have even been discussed, but the Blue Jackets have made a call to Ottawa. One must wonder if Lee wouldn't be part of a package coming the Blue Jackets' way should they decide to trade prospect forward Nikita Filatov.

That second part is where it gets very interesting, but it's probably not so much a rumour as it is Portzline putting 2 and 2 together. Filatov is a player who likely will get traded from Columbus at some point, given that he and coach Ken Hitchcock don't really fit together and he's already booked it to Russia, but one has to assume the package he could garner around the league is better than one the Senators can offer that includes Lee. I could be wrong, of course, if most GMs feel Filatov won't ever come back to the NHL. Filatov certainly fills a huge hole in the Senators organization: a dynamic, blue-chip offensive prospect, something that the Senators haven't had in their system since, well, Jason Spezza. Assuming part of the package is Lee, I'd have to assume the other would be a forward (Regin, Shannon, Winchester being the most attractive to Columbus, although I'd hate to see Winnie leave), and/or a pick.

Star-divide

Assuming the Blue Jackets are interested in Lee, who could the Sens be looking at acquiring? Outside of Filatov, Kris Russell is perhaps the most obvious. Anytime the Jackets come into trade rumours, Bryan Murray's love for the undersized offensive d-man is mentioned. Given that the team already has Erik Karlsson, though, I just don't see what Kris Russell offers. Other prospects that Murray would be interested in (Cody Goloubef, John Moore) are almost certainly off limits, and there aren't really any obtainable NHL-ready forwards that fill any of the Senators needs. I suppose prospect Maksim Mayorov is intriguing - a 6'2" Russian who potted 17 goals in his first AHL season.

Then again, maybe it's the most obvious trade of all: Alexandre Picard for Alexandre Picard.

So, my question to you is this: do the Blue Jackets have someone on their roster that you think the Senators could make a successful pitch for? If not, what do you think it would take to get Nikita Filatov, and is he worth the risk? It's important to remember that this is all just speculation, and the only confirmation is that the Blue Jackets have called expressing interest.

Also, be sure to check out the reaction from fellow SBN blog The Jacket on this issue.

Lee - Filatov

As much as it would be nice to see some more true offensive depth in the organization, I am leery of a prospect like Filatov. I understand the temptations of playing in the KHL, especially for Russians, but this organization has had enough problems with skilled Russian forward prospects in recent times. I am not a Russian hater, but when you look at how Filatov went to the KHL citing similar reasons as You Know Who, it gives me an uneasy feeling about acquiring him.

That being said, trading Lee is something I think the organization needs to do at some point. While I would love for them to wait until the off-season or next season (to give time for some of the younger prospects to develop), the best value for value trade for him may be this speculated one.

A Lee-Filatov straight up trade would be an absolute fleecing of the Blue Jackets by the Senators, but the proposed trade favours CBJ more than the Senators. With Filatov’s self-imposed exile to the KHL, his value should be lesser than it was before the season, whereas Lee has improved this season (disappointed in his demotion) increasing his trade value.

Oh God, not another one

Filatov is another in a long line of Russians loaded with talent who is not nearly ready to play in the NHL and he won’t learn the North American style… i.e. that you play defence as well as try to fill the opposition’s net. He did not tear up the AHL last year, and he doesn’t listen to coaching. Clouston doesn’t stand for forwards who skate only one way. Mirnov, Zubov, Kaigorodov, Nikulin … have they learned their lesson yet??? And on top of it all the Russians are willing to shell out big bucks for these players… so no thanks we pass on Filatov.

Not Picard for Picard

I say we corner the market on Alexandre Picards. We can call the new one Not R Picard (ours is Alexandre R Picard).

Works perfectly with Not Martin.

Lee - Filatov

One has to think that if this rumor has any legs it’s because both players’ value is low. Lee was drafted a few years ago and has had every opportunity to break the Sens’ lineup – especially given that he was drafted to replace an approaching need for a puck moving D. Other GMs will be wary of a supposed blue chipper who never breaks a weak lineup, especially a lineup of 3-4 pairing Ds with heavy rotation. Lee would offer depth to the BJs, but that’s about it.

Likewise, Filatov is a huge risk given that he may never come back. I agree with Marvellous that the Sens don’t need another flight risk after their history of disgruntled Russian prospects. If this trade happens it’s because two clubs are swapping players with an upside but little concrete value.

As for packaging Shannon, Regin or Winchester, sacrificing any of them would be losing a young, cheap player depth player coming into their own that doesn’t have as much offensive upside. I could stand to lose Shannon, as he was obtained for nothing (Nycholat, right?) and he’s small, so one thinks Murray is using him as a stop gap player.

Some great comments on this one

Considering Ottawa’s dire need for forward depth and Filatov’s upside, I think this is a trade the team has to make. My preference remains for Peter Mueller, but as far as I know, that is a scenario that only exists in my head. There can’t be any doubt that Filatov is a high-risk prospect and our team has a long list of failed Russians, but is this team really in a position not to gamble? Filatov would immediately become our best prospect (as Darren points out, since Spezza) and that is something that can’t be overlooked.

Ottawa is simply not going to be in a position to draft immediate offensive help barring an epic collapse. Taylor Hall would be a coup, but he is going to be a Hurricane or Bruin. The team is probably going to be drafting somewhere in the middle, and even a player like John McFarland, who strikes me as the forward Murray would want most, is not going to be available there.

The bottom line for me here: If we can’t trade for someone better (doesn’t seem likely) and we can’t draft someone better (highly unlikely), then we should make the trade. Lee is not in the team’s plans, and none of the forwards we might have to give up would be a huge blow — though I would also prefer to keep Winchester.

That’s a good point. I was going to say how awkward it could be to have our best offensive prospect to have us in an awkward position in terms of his role on the team, but if we weren’t prepared to bend over backwards for Heatley, we won’t for Filatov.

I read this article on Yahoo about Filatov and it did change my mind on the kid. He does seem to have a decent head on his shoulders. From that article he does seem like he really wants to succeed in the NHL and that his issue was mainly he didn’t see eye to eye with Hitchcock more then anything.

If he would come to Ottawa with a fresh slate, have Russian guys like A-Train and Kovalev as support and be able to fit in with Ottawa’s system that would be awesome. If Murray could pull off a deal to buy low on him do it. It’s worth the risk if you can get rid of some spare parts too.

Yeah, Filatov does seem to be of a different sort

Although I did think Nikulin was of a different sort before he fled to Russia, just as I thought Zubov was of a different sort before he went there, too.

Still, if it costs barely more than a spare part which doesn’t fit into our future plans anyway, we might have a lot more to gain by acquiring Filly than by hanging on to Lee. My one concern is that Clouston is probably as demanding as Hitchcock, although he’s a lot more open to the idea of a more open, offensive style than Hitch.
