Game 25: Ottawa Senators @ San Jose Sharks

Ottawa Senators at San Jose Sharks, Dec 1, 2009 10:30 PM EST

The biggest game of the season so far? Perhaps, in a way, it is. One thing is for sure: The Senators, and the players whose roles Dany Heatley had taken issue with, will certainly see this as a statement game. Ottawa's playing a much more committed team game right now, and it would be great to show how effective a good coach's winning formula can be.

Some things to watch out for:

  • Heatley, who's on pace for a career-high 52 goals so far this season, only has one in his last four games.
  • Joe Thornton, on the other hand, is on a seven-game assist streak, with 12 assists in that span.
  • Ryan Clowe has a six-game point streak, too, with 3G and 4A over those games.
  • Ottawa's only streak is Jason Spezza's two-game point streak.
  • Since taking over the starter's role part way through the Nov. 21 game against Buffalo, Brian Elliott has gone 3-1-1 in Ottawa's net with a 2.49 GAA and a .915 SP.
  • The Sharks are putting Thomas Greiss in nets tonight for his sixth start of the year. Greiss is 2-2 with .897 SP and a 3.19 GAA.
Some readers from the left coast may appreciate a rare late start for tonight's game, but I'll try and stay awake for the whole thing, too. Anyone and everyone else is welcome to join in the live discussion below.

Oh man, poor taste starts at 7:14pm today… I love it!

At least you correctly named the time zone.

I can count into double digits the number of people that use the Standard time abbreviation during Daylight Savings time

This is the nerdiest post you have ever made

And I have read them all, I promise. Do you get in time zone fights with the other nerds and their time zone gangs?

by Mark Parisi on Dec 1, 2009 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

It's nothing to laugh about

Time zone fights are the eighth-most-common non-weapons-related gang fights in North America

Maybe here, but this is nowhere close to my nerdiest post ever.

And no, I do not get into time zone fights, but I will mock you if you use it incorrectly and one time I managed a 12 message e-mail chain before the other person finally understood how retarded she was being. She literally did not know what Daylight time was.

How do you feel about these announcers?

On the one hand, they can’t pronounce Anton Volchenkov, and get kind of irritating. On the other hand, they remind me of what it would sound like if my friends were drinking beer and talking about the game.

by DarrenM on Dec 1, 2009 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

They’re pretty biased. I mean, “onslaught”? But overall, I think they’re entertaining. They seem to understand Ottawa’s game and respect it. That’s nice to see.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 1, 2009 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

Try having to listen to Joe Beninati all night mispronounce almost every Blackhawks player’s name all night. I mean WTF? They’re mostly all Canadian and easy to pronounce….well until tonight I guess?

by hawks61 on Dec 1, 2009 11:20 PM EST reply actions

Sens look okay

Heatley is playing fantastic. So is Michalek. Cheechoo to a lesser extent than those two.

One problem though is that I think Heatley told Marleau and Thornton that he really, really wants to get a hat trick tonight, and so they are passing everything to him, even when he’s not a good option.

Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.

Spezza deserves a lot of credit there

He doesn’t get a point, but he should. It’s nice to see him create offense without the puck.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 1, 2009 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

Whoa

You really think Heatley is playing fantastic? I think he’s just shooting a lot because he wants to lock up his reputation as a dickhead in Ottawa. Michalek is playing fantastic. Heatley backchecked once.

by Mark Parisi on Dec 1, 2009 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

Heatley is skating hard, and showing good puck possession. He’s making sharp passes. He’s creating his own chances. He’s playing really, really well.

He has been strong with the puck tonight. He just hasn’t produced anything. I don’t know if that’s guys not getting open or what.

they weren’t … but too many needed to focus their anger someone … and unfortunately he received that anger … it was unwarranted … but he hasn’t let the lack of the C affect his play … he’s doing tremendously this year

Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality? (boycott Hollywood!)

Man... this is really too bad.

Not only are we not winning, we are not enacting vigilante justice. Where’s Chris Neil when you need him?

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 2, 2009 12:38 AM EST reply actions

This team needs more winning.

How much cap space does winning cost?

by Matthew on Dec 2, 2009 12:43 AM EST reply actions

Okay... if we score here

and then score again…

and don’t allow any more goals…

I think we’ll be ok

by Matthew on Dec 2, 2009 12:46 AM EST reply actions

See?

Now we’d have another PP and only be down one.

by Matthew on Dec 2, 2009 12:52 AM EST up reply actions

Those 2 PP were really bad! C’mon Sens get one more, give yourselves a chance here.

Very true

Probably the worst time for a drop pass.

by Rob.D on Dec 2, 2009 1:00 AM EST up reply actions

You shouldn't

Ottawa could have won this game. It’s not like we were completely dominated. We played with them for long stretches.

Funny ’cause I want to hit Heatley in the precise fashion.

2nd star? For what, the puck glancing off his skate right onto Marleau’s stick twice?

I don’t think they’ll drop another game on this road trip. For serious.

This was the 600th comment. Way to go, Rob. Definitely come back… It was awesome having you here!

RECAP IS ALREADY UP
