Game 14: Ottawa Senators v. New Jersey Devils
New Jersey Devils at Ottawa Senators, Nov 7, 2009 7:00 PM EST
Ottawa Senators. New Jersey Devils. Ummm... Re-match from the 2007 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals? I don't know how to hype the game, but 's bound to be a good one. The Devils could be Ottawa's biggest test of the season so far (aside from the Pittsburgh Penguins), and come in undefeated on the road in seven games this season.
Notes for the game tonight (from the Senators' NHL game notes):
- The last time Ottawa beat New Jersey was Oct. 27, 2007; more than two years ago.
- Ottawa is 19-31-5-8 all-time against the Devils.
- Jason Spezza has 7P (1G, 6A) in his last 3GP in Ottawa.
- Mike Fisher's on a two-game goal-scoring streak.
- Daniel Alfredsson is on an eight-game point streak (4G, 9A, 13P)
- Brian Rolston is on a two-game goal-scoring streak.

Boys, I have no stream and this is not a Team 1200 night. Try to keep Jeff in line and I’ll check in after the game. Go Sens Go!
Are you gonna try and watch it in the nearest sporting establishment?

Enough Hall of Famers!
More Senators hockey!
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 6:57 PM EST reply actions
wish I didn’t have to watch on the CBC stream. Ugh. Better than nothin’, though!
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
I wonder how feasible it would be for CBC just to have all three games nationally, on, say, CBC1, CBC2, and CBC3… Probably a lot less expensive in the days of digital cable.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:16 PM EST up reply actions
Whoa, maybe you can!
I was just looking for the Punjabi feed, and found out I could watch any of the three CBC games that are on tonight. Awesome!
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions
yeah, you can. They do this every HNIC. It’s just… I’d rather watch on TV than my computer, haha.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Yeah, I was watching on TV.
I have all three games available on my Rogers digital cable. (I hope that didn’t sound like a commercial.) Still haven’t found the Punjabi feed, though…

Wow, Michalek is on
Whole bunch of chances already, and just giving it all in front of the net. Awesome start for him, Spezza, and Alfie.

Also agreed.
He’s been fun to watch, and if he makes Brodeur a little fussy, well, I’m okay with that, too.
Geez, there have been basically no whistles this game so far.

LECLAIRE!
Huge lateral-sliding save. Huge.

Great... short-handed already.
Neiler took one.

Chintzy call if I’ve ever seen one, barely even touched him,

OH MY LORD SPEZZA
Great deke, greater save.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:37 PM EST reply actions
It wasn’t even a side-to-side deke… it was an advance-and-pull-back move. Blew my mind.

IT HAD TO BE MICHALEK!
You just knew he was going to score the first one.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:37 PM EST reply actions
It's funny to see him playing dirty in front of the net
Funny and awesome. As long as he doesn’t take too much shit from the defenders.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:38 PM EST up reply actions
Man, awesome...
Just sick. So exciting, those two.

OOOOOOOOOOOH!
Looks like it could be a good fight…

I forgot Peters was on Jersey
He won’t soon forget Carkner, though. Very impressed with that fight.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions
Devastating ones… switching it up really caught Peters off guard.

Good D by Lee
Really held up well against Parise. Not an easy task, but he did alright, despite a bouncing puck and everything.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:45 PM EST reply actions
Hey-O! One thing Kovalev can always do is draw a penalty. Good job by him, on a pretty solid shift.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:46 PM EST reply actions
He can also draw bodies to him. Whenever he has the puck at the boards, 2 or 3 come in.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Cheechoo on the top PP?
He’s getting opportunities, that’s for sure.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions
Winchester got a short PP shift, too
Interesting combos there…
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:51 PM EST up reply actions
End of one, Sens up 1-0.
Every Senator has between 5-8 shifts, and between 3:01 (Kelly) and 8:38 (Kuba) in ice time. Yeah, I think it’s safe to say Clouston wants to make this a four-line game.

I don’t have a problem with it. This is a forum he’s been given, and he’s using it as he wants to. I don’t think it’s the right forum at all, but I don’t have it; Grapes does.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 7:59 PM EST up reply actions
I have a problem with it. It’s completely irrelevant and it drags on and on.
I mean, look at how long this segment has been going on.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Alright, granted, the Remembrance Day edition was ridiculously long…
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:03 PM EST up reply actions
But every weekend he does it! I want to hear more about hockey, and less about a bunch of soldiers. If I want to hear about depressing soldier deaths, I can watch the news that’s on RIGHT AFTER HOCKEY.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
I don’t get it, either. Does he think that remembering the fallen is something hockey fans in particular need to become better at? Maybe he should have a separate segment for that, and devote more time to hockey in Coach’s Corner.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:06 PM EST up reply actions
Haha, yeah, throw him on the National! He can have a War Update with Don Cherry every night.

I bet the actual journalists on the National would love that…

We open on a powerplay?
Oh yes! Might as well just put another goal on the board and skip ahead a few seconds
Nope… we just took a penalty instead. Spezza, hooking.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:08 PM EST up reply actions
Hahahahaha… 18 seconds of powerplay…
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:07 PM EST up reply actions
A penalty kill?
Oh yes! Might as well just put another goal on the board for Michelak.
Alright, let’s see, that’s… one, two, three… at least five chickens! Once they hatch, of course…

Although the PK has indeed been sick so far tonight (knock on wood)

What was that call for? The other guy sat on ruutu!
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Did that short-handed 3-on-2 restore it?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions
Apparently Dean has gone from saying “soft dump in the corner” to “plops it into the corner”. Not sure if it’s much of an improvement…
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:15 PM EST reply actions
Michalek leads both teams with 3 shots.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
another nice save? my stream stopped working for a second.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Another sick little kick-save, this one off a scramble. It wasn’t as flashy as the first one, but might have been more difficult.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions
Ottawa did have a powerplay, right? Because apparently they didn’t have a single shot on it…

BRIAN LEE COAST-TO-COAST!
I did not think that was a possibility.

Phillips should give up the 4 for the kid.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:26 PM EST up reply actions
So who’s getting the penalty? Cheech for hitting Brodeur, or the NJ player who pushed Cheech?
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Turns out it’s a powerplay! Who knew?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:27 PM EST up reply actions
You’ll be happy to know Ottawa got a shot on that powerplay, unlike their first one.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions
Referees need to come to some kind of consensus on what designates possession during a delayed penalty… seriously.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:30 PM EST reply actions
What happened to our league-leading penalty kill?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions
I'll take eighth
I’d like higher, but if goal differential is directly linked to position in the standings, that means playoffs.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions
NICE!
Great takeaway by Kovalev, and some awesome digging by Regin. Brodeur tried to sack him, it was that good…

How is Toronto beating Detroit 3-0 right now? This scares me.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:43 PM EST reply actions
sounds about right. Those seem to get past Leclaire.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Exactly… nothing special, just a big scramble and the puck ended up on Parise’s stick. He flipped it over Leclaire and in. There were 5-6 guys within six inches of the lip of the crease.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions
Hahahahaha...
Milbury is such a douche. “Why do we want to change it? What’s it for?”
Ummmm… Mikey? A guy died last year.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 8:50 PM EST up reply actions
I think Milbury is one of those guys who is afraid of any progress on any front. As conservative as it gets.
And an idiot.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
But mostly a conservative who’s afraid of change.

Winchester
Winnie’s had the least ice-time out of anyone on either team
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
That surprises me. I think Clouston likes him, and he`s a good penalty killer. Very odd.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions
he’s now yelling “You’re a fucking joke! A Joke!”
that’s exactly what he’s yelling.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
He yelled something a little less PC earlier, before he got off the ice.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 9:08 PM EST up reply actions
Peters made a pretty loud homophobic slur there.

There’s something so weak about taking a dozen hooking penalties, or something…

Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Luckily a major
So it’s not a PK. Well, not a 5-on-3 PK.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions
Clouston is pissed
And it`s not the outward rage, like when the refs screw up… it’s a doom glare.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions
What was Michalek doing?
Maybe we should try going back to some defensive penalty-killing specialists.
Kelly-Ruutu
Fisher-Alfredsson
Winchester-Regin
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions
I wrote up an article about penalty woes far before everyone started complaining. they’re hopping on my bandwagon.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Great insight
You spotted the problem before it became a problem, while the Sens’ penalty kill was still keeping Ottawa’s head above water.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions
The PK couldn’t keep running with that efficiency all year.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Oh, I’m heading out after the game so I can’t recap. Just FYI.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.

by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 7, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions
