Game 23: Columbus Blue Jackets @ Ottawa Senators
Columbus Blue Jackets at Ottawa Senators, Nov 26, 2009 7:30 PM EST
Coming off a road loss to New Jersey last night, the Sens are back at home to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ottawa has won the last four at home, outscoring opponents 18-10. Columbus, meanwhile, has let in 16 goals in the past three games. Chris Neil is, as mentioned below, out for the next couple of weeks. So, who should we be watching?
- Alex Kovalev - He missed the past three games for personal reasons, and is joining a much different team than the one he left. He won't have Mike Fisher on his line putting pucks in, so he'll have to do some scoring of his own.
- Milan Michalek - Yes, his speed always important, but right now I'm more interested right now in seeing Milan stand in front of the net, screen the goalie, and tip pucks in. It's been his go-to move lately, and it seems to be working for him: he has five points in as many games, including 4 goals.
- Jesse Winchester - Winnie has been great since returning to the line up, and he assisted on the only goal for the Sens last night. I hope he keeps up his hustle and strong physical play - something that the Sens desperately need while missing Fisher and Neil.
- Chris Phillips - Someone has to keep Rick Nash in check, and with Anton Volchenkov still out, that someone is Phillips.
- Antoine Vermette- I loved Vermette while he was a Senator, even if he frustrated me to no end by not living up to my unreasonable expectations. It'll be fun to see him back in Ottawa, and the Sens know to watch out for his faceoffs, penalty killing, and speed.
- Steve Mason - Any fantasy owner can tell you that Mason has had his struggles this season, including a .890 save percentage this month. I hope he eventually gets over this sophomore slump, but I also hope that he doesn't get over it tonight.
As always, follow along with the fun in the comments before and during the game!

Jeff
It’s up to you today. I am off to Thanksgiving dinner. I’m gonna stuff myself like Cheechoo does every night.
Yeah
This will be pretty Empty. Mark’s gone, Peter won’t be commenting (I believe), which leaves it up to Jeff and I, and maybe a few others who come and join in.
I predict under 150 posts.

Any predictions for tonight's game?
Goals/scores?

simple, yet effective. I actually think it’ll be 3-2, but I’m giving Columbus the edge.
Does that make me a bad person?

Meanwhile we're tied for #2 in takeaways and our TkA/GvA is #6
Stats!
by Jeff Sullivan on Nov 26, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions
Our PP for/PP against ratio of 0.75 is second-lowest, ahead of just Montreal
Lowest in the league a year ago: 0.8, with 25 of the 30 teams above 0.9. Lowest the year before that was 0.83.
Things are going to get better.

It really doesn’t make sense considering how fast the Sens have been, but whatever.

Shannon's lookin' real good this game
I think scratching him was a good idea. He’s been great since returning.

Glad to see the one-ref system works
Blue Jackets continue to get powerplays, Sens do not.

Also not sure how the three guys all hooking Kovalev at once didn’t get a penalty, but whatever.

Rick Nash is so damn good
I wish he was a Senator.

Sens need to open the third with a PPG
Michalek to the front of the net!

Wow. That was a blatant hooking penalty by Spezza.
Not helping our case with the refereeing junta.

For whatever reason, we’re already not getting powerplays. It doesn’t help to take stupid penalties to compound the situation.

i think maybe he thought he could get away with it because there’s one ref. problem is, he still has that Sens luck.

WOW! Campoli with a good defensive play!
Un-freakin’-believable.

RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTU!
That’s how you draw a penalty.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 26, 2009 9:39 PM EST reply actions
Ruutu should’ve gotten a penalty on his original hit, I think.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
mcguire hates ruutu so much. he says everything is embellishment.

He's a regular Andrew Peters
“Oh, he’s an embarassment! Wha-wha-whaaaa!”
I think Peters maybe needs to realize that he isn’t a great role model himself.

We need to take advantage one of these times.

Shannon vs. Nash
and Shannon plays the body! hahaha, that was great to watch.
Shannon needs more playing time. and Kovalev needs more PP time.

Those might be five of the quietest goals...
I didn’t know Foligno had that many.

With all of our injuries
It’s kind of hard to believe that 14 of a possible 18 players have played in 20+ games.
Ooooooh, he's been "omnipresent", Maguire?
He’s probably been benevolent and omnipotent, too. Rick “god” Nash.

Was I the only one who didn’t find it boring? I really liked it. Then again, I was just fascinated with Rick Nash.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
I’ve seen a few too many Columbus games, I guess. Good defensive team, and yeah, Nash rocks. Hopefully in the Olympics, too.
Shit... don't tell Columbus fans you thought it was boring...
They might lose it on us like the Devils fans did.

Don’t worry ’Hawks fans got the same flack after a loss to the Predators. Devils + Predators = boring to death, hockey for the blind boring.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
