27 points in 21 games sure sounds delish, but one has to be properly wary of Ottawa's 15-6 game split home and away so far. While a simple point per game projection has Ottawa currently ranked 5th in the conference, I went ahead and compiled a more sophisticated version which takes into account number of games played at home and away and corresponding projected points per game totals.
As an example, 27 points in 21 games has Ottawa on a 105 point pace. However, looking at home-road splits, Ottawa has 21 points in 15 games at home. That is a 57 point pace over the 41 home games. We have six points in six games on the road for a 41 point pace. Added together and you can see a more accurate projection of our current pace to be 98 points, a big difference from the 105 above. 98 points is currently good for only 7th in the conference, still better than lots of people thought, but by no means are the Senators building a cushion for playoff qualification. They need to keep up this pace and move it on the road.
