Game 21: Washington Capitals @ Ottawa Senators
Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators, Nov 23, 2009 7:30 PM EST
The Ottawa Senators come into tonight's game looking for their fourth straight win, which would be a season high winning streak. The Capitals, meanwhile, are 1-2-1 in their last four and coming off a shootout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Here are some notes for tonight's game:
- As mentioned eariler, Brian Elliott will get the start in goal for the Senators. Elliott currently has a .903 save percentage and is 3-1-2 on the season.
- Also mentioned in Silver Nuggets, Chris Neil will start on the second line with Mike Fisher and Nick Foligno. We'll see if he racks up more points than dumb penalties tonight.
- Ottawa has scored an incredible 14 goals in the past three games. They no doubt hope to keep up their offensive prowess
- Mike Fisher looks to continue his impressive play that saw him post six points en route to being named the NHL's third star of the week.
- Filip Kuba and Daniel Alfredsson are coming off four- and three-point games, respectively.
- For the Capitals, Mike Green is putting up an impressive points streak, with 10 in his last 6 games.
- Since returning from injury, Alex Ovechkin has two goals in three games. Despite those numbers, people are complaining about him being off his game. Also, it should be noted that AO has historically been a Sens-killer, posting 15 goals and 24 points in 16 games against Ottawa. Yikes.
As always, stick around for the game to join in on the fun in the comments.

Peter Raaymakers is a healthy scratch from the GDT tonight...
…as he will be in the stands watching the game live, instead of on his TV or computer like us losers.

I probably won’t be attending the GDT as well. I have to catch this game at el cantina del sport, since I must watch the Monday Night Football game for fantasy football purposes.
Uh oh,
looks like it’ll be a ghost town around here during the game. Have fun, buddy.

ATTENTION: JEFF
Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to help me start a meme for Picard. Namely, pictures of urine and cars.
ATTN: JEFF
you know SBN’s rules regarding obscenity, so let’s not cross too many lines with this, heh.

Agreed. Out of the four starters missing tonight, he’s definitely the biggest loss.
Missing a top 2 d-man, starting goalie, and top 6 forward is not good. Plus… Donovan! :(
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
I just forgot Kovalev is on our team.
It took me a minute to remember the forward.
Nothing.
P.S. Matthew, please. I never go by Matt
Way too many Matt's growing up
I was the only one that went by Matthew, made it easier.
Whatever, you weren’t even a fan before Ovechkin was good. :)

Well, he was probably good the day he put on skates, at like age 2. So some quick math… you might be right (in my case). I might not have been a Caps fan before Ovechkin was good. But even on this standard I think I was.

You weren’t even a Sens fan in the 80s, so you should probably watch what you say.

Yup, you invited us. Now we’ll see how long you keep that welcoming tune up.

Your icon is awesome, by the way. I’m dissapointed I won’t get to rap with you guys tonight. These GDTs are always fun over here.
Thank you. Gotta rock the ‘stache in Movember, right? I’ll stick around for as long as I can but I think I’m going to end up missing most of the 3rd.

I'm movembering, too
It’s been fun. I’ve raised just a shade under $20… but boy, when this moustache really comes in… watch out!

You’re welcome. BTW I was in Ottawa in August on holiday, and really enjoyed it. I toured Parliament and skated the Rideau Canal. I’d love to come back in the winter and skate when it’s frozen.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.
I’m actually from British Columbia, Canada and have never once been to Ottawa. It’s on my to-do list.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
LOL! Do take the tour of Parliament, you won’t be sorry. I was most likely the first and almost certainly the last person to tour it in socks.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.
Skating on the canal is definitely better in the winter.
I want to see an outdoor game on the Canal. I don’t care how much of a nightmare the logistics would be, it would be the most amazing thing ever.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 23, 2009 11:26 PM EST up reply actions
100% agree
The Sens need to make this happen. Stands on either side of the canal. It’s not that hard.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 23, 2009 11:41 PM EST up reply actions
Wouldn't it be legendary?
And if they don’t want to check people into the concrete retaining walls of the Canal (which I don’t understand, because it would be awesome), then make it happen at Dow’s Lake; linked with the canal, not too deep, plenty of space for stadium seating for freakin’ thousands and thousands. Simple as that.

Wait, 4:30 start?
Fuck this, I’ll be back in 60.
Overheard today at work:
“Check your email. It’ll make you LOL. You know what that means?”
“Of course.”
“Oh really? I thought I might teach you something today.”
“What about ROFL, you know what that means?”
“Nope.”
“Rolls on floor laughing.”
“Oh. Well, the email is only an LOL. You won’t ROFL from it.

you’ll just have to post three times as much to make up for it.

Sorry I wasn't here earlier
but YEAHHHHHHH SENS
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Err, things seem to have gone silent…. Anyway, he just got his stick on a nice one-timer from Winny.
Yeah, this placei s dead tonight, unfortunately. Thanks for the description, I’ll have to check it out later.

That's definitely an appropriate word for his goal, and his game.
He was out of this world.

This was more the type of game I was hoping to see from him.

2-1 Caps after one period
Caps with 15 shots, Sens with 8.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Kelly with the only two penalties of the game.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
That is two terrible games in a row for him. I mean, putrid, putrid games. I really thought he was going to cost us this one.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 23, 2009 10:33 PM EST up reply actions
What happened there, anyway?
I didn’t see it. He got hit while on the bench?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 23, 2009 11:30 PM EST up reply actions
You're right
terrible turnover from Cheechoo. I expect to see him benched for that one.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Him too. I really don’t know what he was thinking.
“Hey, I’ll center the puck in my own zone! This will get me on SportsCenter for sure!”
Idiot.

Wow
I’m a big fan of this Michalek-Fisher-Alfredsson combo. Although Spezza needs better linemates than Chris Neil and Nick Foligno.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Where is Canucnik, anyway?
Maybe he doesn’t want to register. Incomprehensible comments aren’t the same when the commenter isn’t anonymous.

there was some good on that powerplay.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Regin, Neil and Picard
Almost as rare as the Neil, Kelly, Cheechoo combo
How good are Regin and Shannon playing tonight?
I’m really impressed with those two. Winchester, as well.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Regin’s best game of the season, in my opinion. Winchester too. They both came to play tonight.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 23, 2009 10:35 PM EST up reply actions
Definitely Regin and Winnie, Shannon killed it, too
I’m not quite comfortable seeing Shannon dangle like he did tonight yet. I’m always afraid he’ll get smoked, and get another concussion, and have his career ended. I hope that doesn’t happen.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 23, 2009 11:32 PM EST up reply actions
I really don’t understand why we keep taking this penalty. If I could talk to Clouston, that’s the one thing I’d ask him. My second would be what it was like to play Rorshach in Watchmen.

Or be the model for Reggie in the Archie Comics.
But seriously, I think Clou-Clou did a hell of a job tonight.

I can't believe the Sens got a point out of this game.

No kidding. Fantastic.
Wish I could watch the OT :(.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
MIKE FISHER YOU ARE A GOD
AND CHRIS PHILIPS HAS CLAIMED THE POINT FROM DANY HEATLEY
WHAT A SEX MACHINE FROM THAT SPOT!
4-3 OT win for Ottawa… and a 4-3 OT loss for Toronto. Sublime!
Time to watch west coast hockey. Peace guys.
Wow… holy shit. That’s just unreal.

I didn’t see any of that game, but I bet a lot of them were outside, ineffective shots. You know, like the ones Ottawa peppered Pavelec with earlier this year.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 23, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions
HOLY SHIT
MIKE FISHER IS SO DAMN CLUTCH THIS YEAR
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
He is going to shatter some personal records at this pace.
Something like 35 goals and 75 points
and he just keeps getting game winners, too. the guy is ridiculous.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
He’s always been good with the game winners. He’s having a hell of a year.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 23, 2009 10:38 PM EST up reply actions
Also, Neil's 4th goal pushes him past his entire 2008 total
And Kuba’s up to 10 points in 13 games so far.
Not to mention a crazy point streak in the last few.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Seven points in two games
Not a bad clip. If he keeps this up for the rest of the season… 224 POINT SEASON FOR KUBA!
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 23, 2009 11:35 PM EST up reply actions
What a game!
Down 3-1, I didn’t think we were coming back, thanks to Kelly and Cheechoo doing their best to debacle the team. Huge win. HUGE win. Elliot was great tonight as well. I don’t fault him for any of the three goals. Imagine what this game would have been like with Volchenkov? We might have a real team here, guys.
I am so glad I went to this game.
Honestly, the first forty were awful—made awful by some awful mistakes. A different team came out for the third, and just dominated the game. Absolute domination. And then the win in overtime, on the third glorious scoring chance in that frame… unreal.
But Spezza can’t buy a goal.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 23, 2009 11:36 PM EST reply actions
First and second: Lame. Third and overtime: Loud.
Although still not so loud. Announced attendance was barely more than 16k, which is pretty bad considering it was a game against Ovechkin. I guess the Sens just aren’t a hot ticket right now.
