Game 20: Ottawa Senators v. Buffalo Sabres
Buffalo Sabres at Ottawa Senators, Nov 21, 2009 7:00 PM EST
The Senators go for their third straight win, while the Sabres try to get back on track after losing their last game. Stories for tonight's game:
- Silver Seven, your friendly neighbourhood Ottawa Senators blog, is trying to surpass the 516-comment record for GameThread comments, as set last game. You have the power.
- Jason Spezza is on a six-game pointless drought.
- Milan Michalek has a goal in each of his last two games.
- Alex Picard has four assists in the last two games.
- Mike Fisher has 2G and 3A for 5P in the last two games.
- The Senators could come to within one point of the Sabres with a win tonight.

So Burke has threatened to trade players?
That must be terrifying. “Oh, no, now I have to go to a team that’s not 30th in the league.”
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:09 PM EST reply actions
Oh, damn it
I have to listen to Rick Jenneret tonight. Nothing makes me wish for a shootout like hearing his fat neck talk.
CBC is better
Sorry you’re outta luck. Maybe if you get reaaaaaaaaally big rabbit ears?

Sigh… Americans just don’t know how to pronounce French names.

Neale has been?
Because that sounds like something he’d do.

We should also play with a beach ball
At least you weren’t at the game in question.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions
I guess it was pretty awesome, even if I did have to take the walk of shame from the rink to the hotel in full Sens gear.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions
Hahahaha... is that how Jeannerett says it, too?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions
It's going to be tought for the two of us to set a new record, Mark
We’ll have to work pretty effing hard.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:24 PM EST reply actions
You’re welcome to write here, instead…
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:42 PM EST up reply actions
Hahahaha, no, can't compete with that... who are you writing for?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:43 PM EST up reply actions
The book is about the Mariners.
I’m writing about Safeco Field.
Real tough
Just driving right through guys. It’s very strong.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions
I was going to say...
I also think someone told him I was writing a post about whether or not he’s Hall of Fame-bound. Thoughts on that?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions
Woo, tough call. As a Sens fan, I say hell yes. But unbiased, I don’t know. Hall of Very Good for sure. Hall of fame? I don’t know. I think if he wins a Cup he’s in.
Yeah, I’d say he’s in, but I’m biased. Very biased. I think he should definitely be in.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:42 PM EST up reply actions
Picard and Kuba?
That’s an interesting pairing.

FOLIGNO! Wow...
Made Myers look like the rookie he is.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:32 PM EST reply actions
Oooooh... Regin looks flabbergasted.
Damn penalties.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:34 PM EST reply actions
I don’t understand if this is a penalty on Regin. What is he supposed to do when the guy won’t let go of his stick?
I guess he's got to let go of his stick?
Or maybe Regin just has a reputation now… he’s such a goon.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions
I think your prediction feels right, Peter
Doesn’t this feel like game one of a playoff series? Teams feeling each other out?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Bullshit penalty kills us again! Vanek gives BUF a 1-0 lead
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:47 PM EST reply actions
Kuba’s, too… He left Vanek all alone.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions
It wasn’t that bad… his defence gave him no help. Vanek was wide open in front, and he’s not the kind of guy you can leave wide open in front.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions
How is Leclaire playing like Gerber? Gerber would have saved it to the front of the net. Leclaire steered it to the side but none of Kuba and Phillips picked Vanek up.
If you want your team to win you have to try to support your goalie through thick and thin.
He really likes Darren's comments.
He hates Jeff.

I didn't hear him, but he might be part giant.
Like Hagrid.

Only losers think they're too cool for Harry Potter.

Any recommendations for a list of the top ten ever Sens games?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:04 PM EST reply actions
I’d say that last game of the regular season against the Sabres. 1-0 Sens and they make the playoffs for the first time.
April 12, 1997
That’s right up there.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:09 PM EST up reply actions
How about a top ten list of OT losses?
We’ve had like five great ones this season alone.
YEAH! Goodbye, six-game pointless streak
You might enjoy his breakaway shortly…
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions
Sigh... Spezza...
I’m surprised he didn’t pass.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:12 PM EST up reply actions
Okay, he seems not seriously hurt.
He’s staying in.
Okay... maybe he's fine...
He’s still in the game.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions
Oh, hey, the Senators are winning?
Let’s give them a penalty.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions
Hahahaha...
I thought you waited until the whistle, anyway? Or are you a couple of whistles behind?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions
We’re just coming back from commercial. You’ll find out, don’t worry.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions
I should watch that...
I think I will on intermission. It is pretty kick-ass.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions
Whew!
I was getting hopeful with that 5 on 5 play. Glad to be back on the PK
And yay, a PP
This game is going to be entirely special teams
Regin really has to step up tonight with Kovalev and Donovan out. Especially with Kelly betraying the team everytime he gets on the ice tonight.
I'd like it if Regin would score.
It would be swell.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions
Tonight, and this season.
For the most part.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:50 PM EST up reply actions
Is it just a matter of monkey on the back? I hope so. He could be good. He’s got some pretty strong skills.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions
I’m calling goal by Spezza. Is it just me or is he shooting more this period? Maybe he listened to Don Cherry’s rant….
That was a sweet deke, eh?
Right around the defencemen, the goalie, the net… he would have gone right out of the rink if the boards weren’t there.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions
Damn... Alfie needs it most at this point.
He also needs to work on shooting it through guys. As much as he’s trying, he’s not quite there yet. Soon enough, though… oh yeah.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:48 PM EST up reply actions
I find it hard to believe he missed the net four times in a row. I think that was probably some kind of set play that they just weren’t executing on.
I think they moved the net accidentally
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:51 PM EST up reply actions
Hahahahaha...
Well, I guess I can’t blame him for that. How else will you score on the PP than the Cloustonian Circle?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions
Wow, these guys are really killing Kelly here...
They are running him into the ground.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions
Or is it Ian? Who the hell is this guy?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:53 PM EST up reply actions
Sorry, I'm talking about the Satellite Hotstove on CBC
I thought this guy was Paul Kelly, but he’s some guy named Ian from the NHLPA. Personally, I couldn’t really care less about player-union issues.
Although Chris Kelly is having a rough night, too.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions
I can’t wait to see the segment about how the Sharks are a playoff disappointment again. That’s the one I’m really looking forward to.
More so than the one about how a first line of Marleau-Thornton-Heatley leads Canada to a gold medal in Vancouver. That one will be cool, but I’ll feel a bit uncomfortable being happy about it.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions
Did you read the top 10 disappointing teams on Puck Daddy today? I thought we were going to be #2 for sure.
I probably don't want to read this, but I will anyway...
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:04 PM EST up reply actions
Well, we’re number three. Mostly thanks to last year’s suckiness.

I'm calling groin...
He bent pretty uglily on that play in question.

It was a lot of things.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:14 PM EST up reply actions
'Bout damned time
He could use the points.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions
Wow... Shannon gets one, too?
That’s something.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions
I blame Spezza
Who knows what he was doing there. Just watching the others play.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:22 PM EST reply actions
He should use one of those fake timeouts
The ones that Boston has lots of
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:30 PM EST up reply actions
I wish Clouston didn't call the timeout already
He needs to remind this team that there’s 9 minutes left.
That was really dumb.
Reminiscent of last season’s Chris Neil with the stupid penalty. How does Adam Mair get you off your game? Seriously.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:37 PM EST up reply actions
Oh yes. He will get it in the recap...
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:45 PM EST up reply actions
“At least they managed to keep their box tight…” Saucy
Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.
Plenty of kegel exercises, I guess.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions
AMAZING pk kill. The guys deserved it tonight. Elliott gets the win and we get our 2nd 3 game winning streak of the season. Cya guys.
Kudos to Kuba on the PK, too
He was bad on BUF’s second goal, but huge on the PK.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions
He still has that softness to his game, but I think a four point night makes up for it, especially with a +2 and 4 SOG
He even was a little more solid physically tonight, even if it wasn’t stellar. Credited with a couple of hits, but had some good positional physicality.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:53 PM EST up reply actions
I though everyone had a little more physicality tonight (some did not use it correctly… DOOM GLARE for Neil), even….
I don't get it...
But it is funny nonetheless.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! Pee car!
I come from Canada, and they think I’m slow, eh?
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions
I'm with albanada
Sorry, Sens buddy Mark. Gotta give it to Michalek.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions
I think it's Elliott
He was on for the winner.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions
The important question is who goes Monday against the Caps? I doubt it’s Leclaire, and I’m not sure Elliot is up to it, though he was great against the Rangers a week ago.
If Leclaire can’t go, it’ll be Elliott. If Leclaire can’t back up, though… egads. Mike Brodeur would come up, I guess.
by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 21, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions
I’d be surprised if Leclaire can back up. I’d rather have him miss a few games than risk aggravating an injury.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 10:32 PM EST up reply actions
Apparently Clouston says Leclaire is fine.
But I don’t know where he went to med school. Probably Vasser.
