Game 20: Ottawa Senators v. Buffalo Sabres

Buffalo Sabres at Ottawa Senators, Nov 21, 2009 7:00 PM EST

The Senators go for their third straight win, while the Sabres try to get back on track after losing their last game. Stories for tonight's game:

  • Silver Seven, your friendly neighbourhood Ottawa Senators blog, is trying to surpass the 516-comment record for GameThread comments, as set last game. You have the power.
  • Jason Spezza is on a six-game pointless drought.
  • Milan Michalek has a goal in each of his last two games.
  • Alex Picard has four assists in the last two games.
  • Mike Fisher has 2G and 3A for 5P in the last two games.
  • The Senators could come to within one point of the Sabres with a win tonight.
Not much else to say. Puck drop is 7 p.m., and the game thread starts up an hour beforehand. Join us for the witty in-game banter back and forth.

Who here is listening to New Kids on the Block – Hangin’ Tough to pump up?

Also, I can’t believe Picard has four assists in the last two games. I’ve hated his play. Though, I think he’s paired up with Campoli now. Can anyone confirm that? I thought I noticed those two on the ice at the same time a lot against the Penguins.

So Burke has threatened to trade players?

That must be terrifying. “Oh, no, now I have to go to a team that’s not 30th in the league.”

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The only reason I care about what fat fuckin’ Burke has to say is because it’s like watching a car head the wrong way down a one way street.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, damn it

I have to listen to Rick Jenneret tonight. Nothing makes me wish for a shootout like hearing his fat neck talk.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He just said “As per”

Just when I thought I couldn’t hate him more.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

CBC is better

Sorry you’re outta luck. Maybe if you get reaaaaaaaaally big rabbit ears?

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He just called Lalime “Miller”. I hate him so much.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sigh… Americans just don’t know how to pronounce French names.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They’ve been calling Leclaire “Lalime” all night. No joke.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Neale has been?

Because that sounds like something he’d do.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope, Jenneret

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

All he does is cry for penalties. I fucking hate him. Everything is offsides or cheating.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Harry Neal praised Murray for the Heatley trade. He says Murray deserves credit for getting something when everyone knew he had to move Heatley. That’s nice analysis… two months ago.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I’m still bitter

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We should also play with a beach ball

At least you weren’t at the game in question.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I almost wish I was, even knowing how it ended. I’ve never been to a Sens playoff game.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess it was pretty awesome, even if I did have to take the walk of shame from the rink to the hotel in full Sens gear.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No one is here to see this PP?

Now no one will believe it happened!

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I know, and I usually only post during the commericals. Wanna be Sens buddies?

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

YEAH!

I thought you’d never ask.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sweet

IN YOUR FACE JEFF

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Alfie looks good tonight

He’s playing a strong game.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Real tough

Just driving right through guys. It’s very strong.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And he’s really trying to get Spezza a goal, it looks like

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I was going to say...

I also think someone told him I was writing a post about whether or not he’s Hall of Fame-bound. Thoughts on that?

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Woo, tough call. As a Sens fan, I say hell yes. But unbiased, I don’t know. Hall of Very Good for sure. Hall of fame? I don’t know. I think if he wins a Cup he’s in.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I’d say he’s in, but I’m biased. Very biased. I think he should definitely be in.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Picard and Kuba?

That’s an interesting pairing.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

FOLIGNO! Wow...

Made Myers look like the rookie he is.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t understand if this is a penalty on Regin. What is he supposed to do when the guy won’t let go of his stick?

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess he's got to let go of his stick?

Or maybe Regin just has a reputation now… he’s such a goon.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hah! Wings beating Habs 2-0!

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 7:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think your prediction feels right, Peter

Doesn’t this feel like game one of a playoff series? Teams feeling each other out?

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:42 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Fuck. Right there that’s Chris Phillips’ fault

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 7:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kuba’s, too… He left Vanek all alone.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh hey, a bullshit penalty call!

Where’s the goalie interference!?

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It wasn’t that bad… his defence gave him no help. Vanek was wide open in front, and he’s not the kind of guy you can leave wide open in front.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How is Leclaire playing like Gerber? Gerber would have saved it to the front of the net. Leclaire steered it to the side but none of Kuba and Phillips picked Vanek up.

If you want your team to win you have to try to support your goalie through thick and thin.

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 7:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Leclaire reads our posts. Cheechoo told me so.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He sounds like a neanderthal

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sigh... Spezza...

I’m surprised he didn’t pass.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He should have passed to himself. He would have scored.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ALFIEEEEEEEEE

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 8:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If we hadn’t scored on that shift I would have cried.

by skullfisher on Nov 21, 2009 8:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hahahaha...

I thought you waited until the whistle, anyway? Or are you a couple of whistles behind?

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I want to read the comments too. I can’t help it.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

So am I. What feed are you using?

Oh, it just came back. Play isn’t back on yet.

by skullfisher on Nov 21, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m on ND-1 because I’m not in Canada. It’s the MSG feed.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s in my plans. But I need a badass TV first.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We’re just coming back from commercial. You’ll find out, don’t worry.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Boo-yah convert those cynics Snoopy!

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 8:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Has anyone realized how kick-ass HNIC Punjabi is?

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 8:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I should watch that...

I think I will on intermission. It is pretty kick-ass.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can imagine Milan Michalek dancing to “Evacuate the Dancefloor”.

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 8:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Whew!

I was getting hopeful with that 5 on 5 play. Glad to be back on the PK

by Matthew on Nov 21, 2009 8:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I can’t, I’m with someone. We’re not exclusive, but I’m hopeful.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And yay, a PP

This game is going to be entirely special teams

by Matthew on Nov 21, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Thank you Peter Regin.

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Regin really has to step up tonight with Kovalev and Donovan out. Especially with Kelly betraying the team everytime he gets on the ice tonight.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would like to see that too. He’s been fairly unremarkable tonight except for drawing that PP.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He was so good in the preseason. I think he’s trying too hard.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Is it just a matter of monkey on the back? I hope so. He could be good. He’s got some pretty strong skills.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

YES! 5 on 3!

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 8:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

YES!

Delay of game penalty

by Matthew on Nov 21, 2009 8:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m calling goal by Spezza. Is it just me or is he shooting more this period? Maybe he listened to Don Cherry’s rant….

by skullfisher on Nov 21, 2009 8:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I didn’t specify when said goal would happen, so I’m taking credit if and when he scores, no matter when it happens.

by skullfisher on Nov 21, 2009 8:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That was a sweet deke, eh?

Right around the defencemen, the goalie, the net… he would have gone right out of the rink if the boards weren’t there.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Alfie couldn’t participate though, because it would be on a non-game day.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Damn... Alfie needs it most at this point.

He also needs to work on shooting it through guys. As much as he’s trying, he’s not quite there yet. Soon enough, though… oh yeah.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I find it hard to believe he missed the net four times in a row. I think that was probably some kind of set play that they just weren’t executing on.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That or he saw something that made him decide to try a hard spot to hit

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

By hard spot, I mean the net

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yupee the Hotstove!

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 8:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They should be. He may as well be wearing a Sabres jersey tonight.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry, I'm talking about the Satellite Hotstove on CBC

I thought this guy was Paul Kelly, but he’s some guy named Ian from the NHLPA. Personally, I couldn’t really care less about player-union issues.

Although Chris Kelly is having a rough night, too.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh. Well, Kelly is shit tonight.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Media always takes the easy story. They suck.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can’t wait to see the segment about how the Sharks are a playoff disappointment again. That’s the one I’m really looking forward to.

More so than the one about how a first line of Marleau-Thornton-Heatley leads Canada to a gold medal in Vancouver. That one will be cool, but I’ll feel a bit uncomfortable being happy about it.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Did you read the top 10 disappointing teams on Puck Daddy today? I thought we were going to be #2 for sure.

25-12 Ottawa leads on faceoffs

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Shit Elliott’s in, Dean Brown says upper-body injury.

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 9:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'm calling groin...

He bent pretty uglily on that play in question.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m calling ankle. I think Carkner dropped a guy on his left ankle.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm calling back...

He bent pretty uglily on that play in question.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What? Who just put that in? Was it Kelly? KELLY?!?!

by skullfisher on Nov 21, 2009 9:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

NICE ONE Kelly!

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 9:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 9:17 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

ALFIE’s 2nd! 5-1!

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 9:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I blame Spezza

Who knows what he was doing there. Just watching the others play.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I bet you Elliott wanted that in so he could get the win

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 9:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I bet you Leclaire is glad it won’t count against his GAA

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm....

Lets not let this continue

by Matthew on Nov 21, 2009 9:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Clouston’s gotta call a timeout

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 9:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He can’t, he used it before the 5 on 3 earlier

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I like your thinking, though. You’re clearly a smart person.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wish Clouston didn't call the timeout already

He needs to remind this team that there’s 9 minutes left.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

fisher looks confident and is making great patient plays with the puck

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Love the dumb penalty face: “Who, me?”

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Nov 21, 2009 9:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ottawa really needs to play with some discipline. This is effing ridiculous

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Wow that was dumb

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

by Andrew J on Nov 21, 2009 9:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That was really dumb.

Reminiscent of last season’s Chris Neil with the stupid penalty. How does Adam Mair get you off your game? Seriously.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously. Dishonorable mention to Neil tonight.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Make sure you include how terrible Kelly was, too. I thought he was going to turn on us NWO-style

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sens really want to lose this game

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

“At least they managed to keep their box tight…” Saucy

Plenty of kegel exercises, I guess.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Better sign Leclaire up if you’re correct about the injury

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

AMAZING pk kill. The guys deserved it tonight. Elliott gets the win and we get our 2nd 3 game winning streak of the season. Cya guys.

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 9:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for coming!

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Kudos to Kuba on the PK, too

He was bad on BUF’s second goal, but huge on the PK.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He still has that softness to his game, but I think a four point night makes up for it, especially with a +2 and 4 SOG

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He even was a little more solid physically tonight, even if it wasn’t stellar. Credited with a couple of hits, but had some good positional physicality.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I though everyone had a little more physicality tonight (some did not use it correctly… DOOM GLARE for Neil), even….

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You know… Picard?

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 10:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! Pee car!

I come from Canada, and they think I’m slow, eh?

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Kuba
Alfredsson
Michalek

by albanada on Nov 21, 2009 9:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'm with albanada

Sorry, Sens buddy Mark. Gotta give it to Michalek.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Michalek is also selectable. 6 SOG and he was lethal in front of the net tonight. But I thought Fisher had an outstanding all around game, and the Ottawa media agrees with me, so shut up or I’ll end you.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

who gets the win?????

by Buz Killington on Nov 21, 2009 9:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The important question is who goes Monday against the Caps? I doubt it’s Leclaire, and I’m not sure Elliot is up to it, though he was great against the Rangers a week ago.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If Leclaire can’t go, it’ll be Elliott. If Leclaire can’t back up, though… egads. Mike Brodeur would come up, I guess.

by PeterR on Nov 21, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d be surprised if Leclaire can back up. I’d rather have him miss a few games than risk aggravating an injury.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 21, 2009 10:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Apparently Clouston says Leclaire is fine.

But I don’t know where he went to med school. Probably Vasser.
