Is it time to go the trade route?
We struggled mightily to beat the lowly Leafs. Even when Volchenkov comes back, we do not have enough to make the playoffs? We struggle to get the puck out of our zone and game after game we don't have enough finish. Our 4th line outshines our 3rd line game after game. On the positive side, the goaltending looks good enough, now that Leclaire has shaken off the rust. It's time to start considering acquiring Cheechoo a mistake... not that anyone would take on his contract... but let him go to Bingo to try to recapture his confidence. Surely we could put together a package that would shore up the defence and bring some improvement.

I don’t know what the Senators could give up – outside of draft picks – that would gather interest around the league. Any ideas?

Has anyone been watching this Frolik kid in Florida? I’d love to get our hands on him, but the Panthers don’t have much more room than Ottawa.

Florida needs him more than we do. You think they’d ever be willing to lose him?

I seriously doubt they would, especially with what we have to offer them.

Haha, would you be trying to offer them the same thing every poster on HFboards proposes? “We’ll give you Picard and Zubov for your star player, please.”

Don’t forget Cheechoo and Kelly… we need other teams to take our bad contracts also — no matter how close to the cap they are!

Well, I highly doubt that Murray asked for Cheechoo in the Heatley trade. I think it was more likely that he was a salary consideration for them to fit Heatley’s contract.
The tough part about the salary cap era is that evey team has bad contracts, and no one wants to take on anyone else’s. Guys that we want to trade because of salary reasons (Kelly, Cheechoo, even Neil) are exactly the kinds of guys no one else wants. I highly doubt anyone would even take Kovalev’s contract at his current level of production.
I think it’s far too early to say this team doesn’t have enough to make the playoffs. We’re not even 20 games into the season yet. There’s no telling what will happen over the course of a season, and this team looks a lot different with Volchenkov in the line up.
Most importantly, while I am not a fan of what Lee, Picard and especially Campoli are bringing to the table right now, I don’t know that a “trade to shore up the defense” is what the team needs most. The team has some pretty good depth coming up. Karlsson is not far off, Cowen could be NHL-ready as soon as next year, and even Patrick Wiercioch is putting up strong numbers in Denver. Once he fills out a little bit more he could be a great player for the team.
I don’t think this team is a D-man away from winning the Cup, so I’d hate to see them give up some young guys for a band-aid solution. We watched them become elite through the draft once; let’s give our new young guys a chance to develop before talking about trading them.

Yeah, I doubt Murray wanted Cheechoo. As for relegating him to the minors, Melnyk won’t want to eat that contract, and it won’t do anything for Cheechoo’s confidence (although it might help his numbers). It’s pretty much a guarantee we’ve got him anchoring our third line for this year and next year.

Since we started talking trade, the D has gotten alot better, especially Kuba, Carkner and Picard. It’s alot more difficult these days to pull off a trade with so many teams having cap issues. But that’s why the GMs get the big bucks. Trouble is that more teams than not want to dump salary. With Volchenkov coming back, maybe we just need some patience.

I don't know about that...
Since we started talking trade, Kuba has gotten better, Phillips has continued to be amazing, while Carkner and Picard have returned to their previously-reliable stature. Campoli may have gotten worse, while Lee is up and down like a thing that goes up and down a lot. A see-saw, that works. Realistically, I think we need an upgrade at defence and at forward, but the defenceman we need upgraded is Campoli and the forward we need upgraded is Cheechoo, neither of whom are likely to go anywhere.

If the Sens are in the hunt for the playoffs, I could see Murray to deal SJ’s second rounder for a capable defenseman on an expiring contract at the deadline.
For revenue and morale purposes, this team really needs to make the playoffs. But Mark & Graham are right in that they should not mortgage their future to do that.

The team is saddled with too many bad contracts and mediocre players to make any kind of meaningful trade. If Murray is truely determined to make something significant happen, it will probably be to the long-term detriment of the team. This team isnt ready to contend yet, so BM needs to let the season play out and see what kind of players we really have.

I know of a guy that could help.
There is a guy in Chicago by the name of Brian Campbell that will be available at soon which could be what the doctor ordered for the PP and a defenceman that can eat up close to 25 minutes+ . Regardless of what some of the experts say Brian Campbell is still one of the better defencemen in the league.
A large salary indeed but at least the Sens will be getting something in return for their investment instead of the Kovalev and Cheechoo variety. It also wouldn’t cost the Sens to deal away any prospects that would be considered to be mortgaging their future since Chicago will be looking to unload a contract with them being over next season’s supposed cap number.

I like the sound of this, but the salary cap makes it an impossibility. Chicago would have to take so much salary back that they wouldn’t gain anything by trading with Ottawa.

It’s not just about the salary now. It’s the fact that Campbell’s salary continues for a very, VERY long time. I’d hate to have that contract on the books.

No doubt about that. I really like our developmental defensive depth anyway. I really don’t think the team needs to run out and get someone.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 19, 2009 12:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’d like this. It would never happen—because CHI can’t take salary back—but Cheechoo and Kuba (or something) for Campbell is a big-time upgrade, and makes our defence pretty darn strong. Not Calgary strong, but still quite strong.
by PeterR on Nov 19, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Really? That doesn’t do anything about Lee, Picard, or Campoli.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 19, 2009 3:33 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
But at least Cheechoo is off the books after next season. Campbell’s contract is very, very long term if I recall correctly. I’d rather have a bad salary that is almost extinguished than one that basically never leaves, even if Campbell is the best player in the trade.

I’d have to agree. Campbell is 30 and would be on the books for another 4 years at 7.124M a year. There’s no way he’d be worth that at 34 when he’s not worth it now.
by Mark Parisi on Nov 19, 2009 4:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Huh, I thought it was for longer than 4 years (didn’t check into it, though). But yeah, it’s a long time to have a 7M+ contract on the books, either way.

There is still 6 years remaining on that contract. Guh. I should’ve said will you please take Campbell. Now will you take him as he is, after all, a former 67.

I thought it was done at the end of the 2013/14 season?

Campbell has one goal and makes $7.1 million. That’s all we need is another overpaid Dman who is offence-only without the offence. The Hawks should just be thankful that Tallon set them up so well, and stay quiet and enjoy the ride.
