Game 16: Ottawa Senators @ Philadelphia Flyers

Ottawa Senators at Philadelphia Flyers, Nov 12, 2009 7:00 PM EST

Darren's Take: There's been enough talk in the media about how this is the first time that the Senators will face former goaltender Ray Emery, so I'm going to skip that analysis. The things I'm going to be paying attention to:

  1. Pascal Leclaire, who has to bounce back after letting in a soft goal late in the third against the Oilers. Bringing his SV% above .900 would be great, too.
  2. Jonathan Cheechoo, who starts on the second line tonight. After breaking his goalless slump with a beautiful one-timer last game, Cheech has to continue to get pucks in the net.
  3. Alex Kovalev, who is coming off of a very strong performance where a physical forecheck led to the Cheechoo goal. Let's hope he keeps up the intensity.
  4. Discipline, something the Senators had in spades last game as they were shorthanded only once. The Sens need to keep that up against the Flyers, who have a dangerous and talented powerplay.
  5. The line of Nick Foligno-Peter Regin-Ryan Shannon, which was absolutely buzzing last game and should be plenty of fun to watch again tonight.
  6. How the Senators play against one of the few Stanley Cup contenders they've faced this season. The Flyers have a great team, and Ottawa has not fared well against strong opponents during the season.

As always, feel free to post away in the comments during the game along with the other diehards who should be present.

Who here is listening to CPAC to pump up?

That’s some kind of lawyer joke, I bet

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

Ha! Not quite. CPAC is the Canadian Parliament television channel, which I figured would be appropriate for Ottawa.

I don’t watch it.

But I guess there is law involved, so you were half right.

I figured I’d hit that up after the game. I’m interested to see what Marv posted.

So, Leclaire should be better than Emery. We need him to be.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:11 PM EST reply actions

Leclaire is better than Emery, but with a weaker defense.

I am amazed at the quality of shots that Leclaire faces every game. It’s disgusting. I should write about it.

I think Regin had the only win. And Kovalev’s turnovers are hurting us.

Kelly just won one. Regin was the other.

Still, again, it looks like Ottawa can play with this team. It’s always the penalties that keep us out. Let’s hope Lee didn’t cost us a goal here.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:21 PM EST reply actions

I'm not watching yet

how was the penalty? bad one?

Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.

by DarrenM on Nov 12, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

It was justifiable. Lee just got too aggressive.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

Lee called for roughing is almost as bad as Kane called for roughing (outside of a cab driver in Buffalo).
I’m back and hopefully my luck continues as the Sens seem to always win when I come here during game threads.
By the way, how’s Matt Carkner been playing as the Sens have been playing on the same nights as the Hawks?

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Nov 12, 2009 7:23 PM EST reply actions

He's been solid

He keeps it simple, and has done fairly well. He makes a couple of blunders here and there, but they are rarely costly.

He hasn’t been a liability, which is better than other D the Sens have, but he hasn’t been a standout either.

Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.

by DarrenM on Nov 12, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that’s a fair asessment. His game has dropped off a little from the start, but I blame Picard for that. Picard is my most hated Sen right now.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks guys I appreciate that.
Everything high on Emery, wonder why? He’s down every shot Price like.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Nov 12, 2009 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not an expert, but I’ve always felt that Emery was the kind of goalie who relied too much on his athleticisim to make plays. His lateral movement has always been weak in my eyes (remember Pominville) and I think he covers it up with his athletic talent. Based on that, I suspect they’re shooting high on him because that’s their best opportunity to get rebounds. Or, if he’s a fraction of a second slow, a goal. If he’s flicking out his blocker or glove, he has less of a chance to control the rebound. That’s my theory, anyway.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

Remember Pominville? That goal ruined my playoff pool that season as I had it all but won with Havlat’s start against the Lightning.

by hawks61 on Nov 12, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

I think it was to get rebounds

Too bad there was no Donovonian “SAP” (slot-area presence, which is a Pierre Maguire-ism). What good is a rebound if the Flyers just clear it out?

by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 12, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Cheechoo hit a post. He’s looking good again.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:28 PM EST reply actions

That was sick

He’s driving the the slot, which is how he’s had success in the past.

by Peter Raaymakers on Nov 12, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Ottawa the most penalized team in the league and Carkner leads the league in fighting majors? Really? When did this transformation take place?
Conversely, the Blackhawks are the least penalized team in the league which has baffled everyone over at SCH. Very untraditional for both teams.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Nov 12, 2009 7:43 PM EST reply actions

There’s been a real rash of lazy play on the team. As a result, they’ve been taking a ton of penalties. Stupid penalties, untimely penalties. It’s been very frustrating to watch. The PK has kept them afloat for a while, but without Volchenkov, they’re starting to spring leaks.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

So without the Tank, the PK is tanking? Seems possible and ironic.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Nov 12, 2009 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t say they’re tanking, but they just can’t keep up the energy when they’re spending a whole period on the PK, which is the amount of minutes they’ve been averaging.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, they’ve spent waaaay too much time in the box this year. Bad penalties at worse times.

by Mark Parisi on Nov 12, 2009 8:15 PM EST up reply actions

Now that’s a positive attitude. With that said though teams that score first usually win over 60% of the games played since the lockout and receive a point about 70% of the time. Last year there wan’t an NHL team with a losing record after scoring first. Strange.

They want to be like the Ducks, unfortunately for the Flyers the Ducks had Giguere to backstop them to a champoinship, not Emery. The Flyers are pretty much destined to be upset in the 1st round with their goaltending, especially within a conference with Brodeur, Fleury, Miller, and Lundqvist.
